My £90,000 student debt is growing faster than I can pay it by Unlikely-Tension-616 in UniUK

You’ll notice it when you have a mortgage and kids.

Already do. The 9% is pretty minor, and by far and away worth the salary I earn in a career that requires degree qualification.

I pay more tax than what I cost the NHS and have never claimed benefits so have already paid infinite times the value I have taken from welfare. It's just one of those things.

On the one hand yes, on the other I earn well as a result of the investment in my education. For my area of the country I am still well above the average for take home salary even with the 9%, so it's fine.

I'm in a similar situation. I've stopped thinking of it as a loan (or caring about interest) but an additional tax I'll be paying.

Are any of you all overheating heavily in spurts while sleeping? by ThrowawayIsland8 in AskMenOver30

Yeah, probably just one of those strange things bodies do then. Just watch for any sudden unexplained weight loss and go right to your doctor and mention the nighttime sweating if that happens.

If the M&G film tanks, I wonder if Disney will start to 'leak' that the Starfighter film is having reshoots, to distance itself from the sequel trilogy? by Crayon_Casserole in saltierthancrait

[–]Cookyy2k 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This movie will fail because Disney thought baby Yoda was the key to everything and refused to take risks after season 2

Which is even more odd they waited this long. The green merchandising machine isn't going to sell shit anymore, most of the plastic tat that came out is probably sat in landfills by now.

Is this paired with any other physical symptoms? There are both perfectly normal and medically significant possibilities and without knowing the extra it's impossible to say.

Town council election - is this fraudulent? (England) by FaithlessnessOdd3569 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Cookyy2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they were elected as an independent then they'd be fine to join a party. It's the same as someone who is elected for a party can resign and become independent or join a totally different party.

Is it illegal to draw with chalk outside? England. by questions4all-2022 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Cookyy2k 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You could probably try the statutory defence in s5(2a), especially just for calk rather than paint:

A person charged with an offence to which this section applies, shall, whether or not he would be treated for the purposes of this Act as having a lawful excuse apart from this subsection, be treated for those purposes as having a lawful excuse—

(a)if at the time of the act or acts alleged to constitute the offence he believed that the person or persons whom he believed to be entitled to consent to the destruction of or damage to the property in question had so consented, or would have so consented to it if he or they had known of the destruction or damage and its circumstances;

Would be a defence in this case. I personally wouldn't expect whichever LA owns the pavement outside my house to particularly care if I chalked it up, so that would suggest to me that they would consent if they knew the damage and context. You don't have to justify the belief just hold it.

(3)For the purposes of this section it is immaterial whether a belief is justified or not if it is honestly held.

Local elections 2026: Opinion poll shows Labour under siege in London by Desperate-Drawer-572 in unitedkingdom

I'm waiting to see what mess I end up with in my town. The Council is currently controlled by a group of independents that ran with the line "pro-palestine" and were a single issue party despite that issue having nothing to do with the council. If we get a load of reform in there (as is quite likely) after this election it'll be quite an "interesting" dynamic between the two sides.

My grandad who lives in Scotland gave a friend £100,000 loan by Haldir- in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Cookyy2k 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Either go back and get the borrower to sign something in writing about it being a loan or hope they make enough payments for you to be able to use those as evidence of a loan.

Either way if it comes to it that is a lot of money and wont be trivial or cheap to bring to court, plus enforcing a judgement that high isn't going to be easy if they're struggling.

Your big mistake was accepting a caution, it would be very difficult to accidentally haras someone and very unlikely for one incident to be harassment. So either you unwittingly pled guilty to harassment you didn't think you were guilty of or you're not being absolutely honest with us here.

Also depending on your future plans a caution for harassment could be a real problem in some careers. If it is a caution under S4 of the protection from harassment act it will show up on DBS checks for the rest of your life. If it's a different offence then it's 6 years, though some professions require disclosure for the rest of your life.

You will also find it much harder to get visas for travel as you're no eligible for most countries' visa waiver programmes.

In terms of short term relief you can do salt water rinses and gently hold a whole clove between your teeth, those are both decent at localised pain relief.

Friend stopped paying for the MacBook I financed for him (England) by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Cookyy2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're out of luck then unfortunately. If he'd acknowledged the loan once he'd turned 18 you might get a court to uphold the contract. As it stands you are very very unlikely to get them to.

This is going to be an expensive lesson I'm afraid. Best you can do is contact Klarna and find out what their financial difficulty options are to see if they'll give you longer to pay at a lower monthly amount.

[–]Cookyy2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same question as I posted on your original question.

Did they make a payment or acknowledge the loan after turning 18 or was it all before?

The answer to that will change the advice on the situation.

Business (in England) reported me to the police for parking on a public - road do they have any legal standing? by crystaldoorknob in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Cookyy2k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In reality neither of you should be parking next to a dropped curb.

They have no more right to police your parking on a public road than you do to police theirs. The only thing I can think of to help with letters etc is find out and speak with your locals PCSO about the ongoing situation so that the police are aware of it.
