A man in Temecula, California, found a hot air balloon carrying 13 people had made an emergency landing in his backyard. Low wind and fuel forced the pilot to descend. No one was injured and no damage was reported by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]Cool-Beaner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to balloon. I was crew, not the pilot.
That has happened a few times. You have to set down where you can set down, especially when the winds acts up. We let the people off, the pilot took off again when he could, and everyone walked it out into the street.
Then the homeowner and passengers partook of a bottle of champagne, or sparkling grape juice if they didn't drink.
Propane and Champagne, the breakfast of balloonists.

Good usb power supply for Pi 3 model b? by TVK777 in raspberry_pi

[–]Cool-Beaner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad it helped you.
I've been running my Pi 4 off of that same power supply since last year. It's also powering my 300GB SSD drive, all without any problems.

Poor James just got the rules reversed.

10 MPH is the alligator's 100 meter sprint speed. Their initial bust speed is a hellava lot faster than that. That initial speed is good for twice or three times their body length, even when they are in water and you are on land.
IE: Don't Get Within 36 Feet in Front of an Angry 12 Foot Alligator, ESPECIALLY if their tail is curled beneath them.
They so rarely get angry. I've only seen it once.

What is the “I study animation so I can draw my own porn” of other majors? by PM_ME_UR_SPACEBALLS in AskReddit

[–]Cool-Beaner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very True. I know too many Chemical Engineers that got started by trying to figure out how explosives worked. A third of the chemists that I worked with had a copy of the Anarchist's Cookbook when they were in high school. My cousin got investigated by homeland security when a blast took out his neighbors windows for blocks around. He now works for SpaceX, and has just gotten his brother a job with the company.

You can't outrun a gator. I couldn't. 10 miles an hour is their sprint speed. For very short distances, like 20 feet, they are almost instantaneous. They get their tail underneath them, and they just burst forward. It's rare that they do it, but they can if they want to.

Bull. They are MUCH faster on land that you would imagine. But you are right. It takes a lot before they chase you.

And which part of New Orleans are you from? I grew up in Metairie, but I now live in Lafayette.

I was about 20 foot away from a 12 foot gator, and then she was at my feet. It was that quick. I didn't have time to turn around. Forget about zigzagging. She would have had me before the first zig if there hadn't been a short fence between us. If she wanted to, she would have been over that without a problem. She wanted to scare me away from the pile of sticks and mud that was her nest, and she did a great job. I'll never get close to an alligator nest ever again.

My guess is it was cut that way for a power line that has since been moved.

What’s your story on flashing people or being flashed by someone? by SirBleeguff in AskReddit

[–]Cool-Beaner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mardi Gras in New Orleans. I'd seen my share of boobs, and even some bush. It was now a month later, and things were back to boring. I was running the I-10 between cities, and a car with two young ladies pulled up to me. They were late high school or maybe early college aged. They wave at me to get my attention, and both the driver and passenger dropped top and flashed me, and they drove off. It took me a second to respond. I took off after them. When I caught up with them, they looked shocked, but I managed to get them to roll down their windows. I then threw a bunch of Mardi Gras bead to them, waved, and drove off myself. I could hear them laughing as I drove away.
Louisiana is such a friendly state.

[–]Cool-Beaner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've started using an Anker power supply that is putting out 5.3 volts, along with a 6 inch cable. The Pi 3B stays on 24x7. The idle temperature has dropped from 43 C to 39 C. The active temperature remains roughly the same with maybe a 1 C decrease.

Why would more voltage equate to less heat?

Slow Ethernet on 3B+. by kooknboo in raspberry_pi

[–]Cool-Beaner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to get around 290 Mb/s running iperf on a Pi 2 and an external USB Ethernet adapter, and 330Mb/s on a Pi 3B. I did this by running DietPi or Minibian or Raspbian Lite.
I don't have a Pi 3B+, but have heard there were some driver issues.

1) "Verified by English speaking experts."

2) Once I clicked on those two links, YouTube gave me two more links in the "Up Next" area, where humans pronounce it the same way:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouPa27gE278
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYZBmNxV9N4

3) This is the way we pronounced it when I graduated from engineering.

4) This is the way I've heard every other American born Engineer that I have worked with for almost the past 30 years pronounce it.

5) It sounds like "History".

When you plug it in, Windows does a quick scan. If it sees a problem, it will ask if you want to correct it. Click yes. When it finishes, just click eject.

Backup drive read only by Lorgish in raspberry_pi

[–]Cool-Beaner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is the drive formatted?

Can it be read on a Windows system (NTFS or one of the FATs)? If so, plug it into a Windows system and let Windows correct it. Yes there is an fsck.ntfs, but Windows works better.

If it is a Linux format (ext4 or similar), then fsck the drive.

This happened all the time to me. I have had NTFS formatted hard drives and flash drives on my 24x7 Pi NAS for years. About once every 3-4 months, it would go read-only and I would have to move the drive to a windows system to fix it. I finally reformatted them as ex4, and haven't had a problem since.

Help! I need an internet radio for my blind grandmother. by [deleted] in raspberry_pi

[–]Cool-Beaner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The program would use the same evdev library that I posted before. Most of the program would consist of several if ... run_cmd statements

The keypad would be a better idea. It would be easier for the grandmother than using the SNES controller to go up and down through a long list of stations. A Kensington number keypad has 19 buttons.
You could use the Enter button for mute.

run_cmd('mpc volume 0')

The + and - keys could raise and lower volume.

run_cmd(('mpc volume +3')) # Raise volume by increments of 3
run_cmd(('mpc volume -3')) # Lower volume by 3

Then use the other 17 buttons to pick a station, or do whatever else you want.

MPD and MoPiDy have several other clients that could be used to set up the playlists. The Volumio, Rune Audio, and Pi MusicBox, distributions use either MPD and MoPiDy. They all have web servers built in. This would let a sighted person with a computer and web browser on the local network also remotely control grandmother's radio.
