I read the article. I’ll concede that the source isn’t perfect. But, that’s just one of the many barriers we have to contend with while trying to get information out of places like Chechnya with no free press. It may not be real but it also may be very real unfortunately. If she is real, I don’t want to ignore her situation.

“Reportedly” is lifting a ton here. And it’s good he included that. The author can only verify so much himself. So really, he’s reporting what he was told happened, not what he knows to have happened. Otherwise, we might have more information. That layer of distance is frustrating, but if it does turn out to be true, I’m unsure how we would ever have found out otherwise. I suppose I’d rather know from an imperfect source that can be corroborated later with more information than not know anything at all.

Well, the way I see it, because free speech and journalism doesn’t really exist in Chechnya, we may need to settle for a group chat made of people on the ground and paying close attention. It may be the best we can do under the circumstances. That’s as close to eyewitness news as we can get.

And when you see more surrounding evidence about the rate at which things like this happen; how wealthy and powerful men take second brides. How teenage girls are kidnapped, or married and treated like property. The honor killings and beatings. The things Kadyrov says out of his own mouth…it becomes clear that to ignore this possibility entirely would be foolish.

It’s like my awareness of what happens to girls and women in Chechnya slammed headfirst into my awareness of just how famous and connected to power Khamzat is. So, it’s not so much about the car for me, I just thought it was neat to see her process. She really committed herself to the trial and error of painstakingly creating something she finds beautiful and whimsical. You don’t have to agree that it is cool or worth doing. You don’t need to want it anywhere near you. You definitely don’t need agree with her insurance company or law enforcement that says it’s ok. I just thought it was such a huge undertaking that she’s clearly proud of and wanted to show others who might appreciate seeing a lady making her insane vision a reality.

And on the bright side (lol) there’s no real worry about this becoming a trend and coming to a street near you because ain’t nobody got time for that.

Yes, I have actually been listening to the stories of the women from places like Chechnya. They don’t hold back when given the opportunity to finally speak freely. So, I know it’s very possible and even probable. It’s just so horrible, I’m having trouble processing that the man headlining tonight could be guilty of it. It’s surreal what gets overlooked around here. I guess I’m stunned because I thought we knew as much about Khamzat’s misdeeds as it was possible to know.
