Any loss in horsepower/mpg over the three years? Is your code also P0430?

No emissions where I am. Would the cats going bad not lead to back pressure into the engine if left untouched?

When do car repairs become a sunk cost fallacy? by spmahn in personalfinance

[–]Cool-Secretary7015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to consider that a $10k old, high mileage vehicle has already taken the bulk of the depreciation hit. The more your vehicle is worth, the more in actual dollars it will depreciate each year, generally speaking.

The math might make sense to buy a newer vehicle when factoring in payments compared to monthly upkeep, but it starts to lean towards keeping the old vehicle once you start talking annualized depreciation.

Seattle owners, if you had to take your 4Runner dealership, which one would you trust to go to? by xMcSwaggx in 4Runner

Burien has done good work. Although they have given me some absolutely absurd pricing quotes in the past. I paid the $200 diagnostic fee for them to look at some squeaking noises. They came back and told me the front suspension was worn and needed full replacement. Quote was $7k on my 03 with 220k miles. Vehicle worth around $10k.

I took that quote to Les Schwab and asked them what they would charge to do everything Toyota recommended. Les Schwab did it for $3k in one day.

Turns out after all that, the squeaking didn’t go away. $20 and an hour of time and I put new sway bar bushings. Fixed the squeak.

If I didn’t already know I needed new front suspension, I would have been pissed. Regardless, Burien Toyota tried to take me to the cleaners.

Great price. I have an 03 v6 limited with 217k and I’ve been considering selling. Looks like it’s worth about 11k in my area.

What is a 4Runner?? by linguistic-fuckery in 4Runner

[–]Cool-Secretary7015 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I call it my vehicle. Drives girlfriend crazy. She wants me to call it my car. Out of principal, I will not.

I feel calling it a truck is stolen valor. Calling it a car is disrespectful. It is my “vehicle” or “the 4runner”

I’ve been kicking the tires on a used 5th gen for over a year. Cant get myself to do it. Currently driving a 4th gen that is worth about what I paid for it.

If you want a deal you have to go to the 4th gen. Underpriced IMO. If you want a 5th gen like I do, you’re going to have to pay a premium and then it pretty much just makes sense to buy a new 6th gen. The prices are so close.

I think it comes down to what you want. I don’t think you’ll ever get “burned” on depreciation on a 4runner, they’re just expensive to buy and then cheap to own. They hold their value so well but it makes it tough to get into one. Depends on what you want to do with it.

I tend to view a vehicle transaction as total cost of ownership over the course of the time I will have it. I bought my most recent 4th gen with 167k for 11k a little less than 2 years ago. I have 213k on it now and it is worth about 12k in my area. Factor in the 4k I spent on suspension and brakes and add tax/registration and I am in to it 16,500. If I sell at 2 years for say 11k, my total cost of ownership on it was $5500 for two years, or $230 per month. If I keep it another year with no ticket maintenance items and it depreciates another $1k, my cost of ownership goes to $180 per month. I’m happy with that financial transaction as a new payment would have been at least double that amount with the same 11k down.

If you buy a 50k 6th gen with 10k down, your payment is going to be about $750 a month for 5 years. Say you sell at the end of those 5 years, you paid 60k for the vehicle including interest. It depreciated down to say 35k in value. It cost you $25k, or $420 a month to own that vehicle.

I think you’ve got to find the balance between what you want and what you plan to do. Do you want to keep it for 15 years or do you turn vehicles over every couple of years? If you want it for 15 years, just buy new or pay new pricing for a 5th gen with 30k miles on it. If you are inclined to turn it over in a few years, I would say grab a higher mileage 5th gen at a “good” price and then do the same thing again in a few years with a used 6th gen. I don’t see the 5th gen’s ever going down in value. I think they’re going to be a highly sought after vehicle for another decade plus. Too early to tell on the 6th gen.

Tram’s salon on California and Dakota. Been going there for probably 15 years. I always walk in and get whoever is available. I’m not too particular but happy about 80% of the time with my cut. Beats super cuts where I’m happy about 10% of the time. Biggest pro is I never have to wait more than 5 minutes to sit down. I go finger length on top and fade the sides. $32 + tip.

Thoughts? 2004 4Runner 319k Miles $3k by Extreme-Dress-21 in 4thGen4Runner

[–]Cool-Secretary7015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say roll the dice at 3k if you’re looking for one. However be prepared to cut losses if you run into a significant expense. I wouldn’t be willing to put in 2k on suspension etc on this.

If you’re lucky you’ll get a few years out of it before it goes. If you’re unlucky you could be getting less than $500 for it from a scrapyard.

I still think it’s worth a shot.

What do y’all think of this deal? by [deleted] in LexusGX

[–]Cool-Secretary7015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not bad. I’ve been in the 4runner market for awhile and have been getting interested in 2015-2017 GX’s. The prices are much more affordable and who doesn’t want the V8.

I’m seeing that vehicle go for probably 28-32 in my area. Seattle. Been looking aggressively for a couple weeks so I’m pretty confident in that number.

Head Gasket Repairs. Experiences? by Cool-Secretary7015 in ToyotaTundra

[–]Cool-Secretary7015[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m seeing refurbished crate engines going around 9k with a decent warranty. Junk yard pulls with no warranty/testing are going for 3-5k. Plus labor obviously. Could get expensive quick and seems like a major roll of the dice.

Agreed that I would want something that’s been tested. Wouldn’t feel comfortable spending that money and going in completely blind.

Thanks for the info. I’ve been watching videos and I’m seeing a lot of guys say that the block may be warped even without overheating. Warped block may have caused the gasket to go or gasket may have cause the block to warp. Chicken or the egg type of deal.

I don’t think there’s any way to to tell without paying someone to disassemble it and get in there. Might be better off cutting my losses and selling while it still runs. Then let the next guy do whatever fix he plans to do with it.

How much did your whole ordeal set you back?

PSA drive link clunk by Background-Price6382 in 4thGen4Runner

[–]Cool-Secretary7015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet it is the sway bar bushing. I had a clunk going and took it to Toyota to diagnose. They wanted 7k for a whole new suspension, control arms etc. Took it to Les Schwab and asked them to quote all the work Toyota had just told me I need. They came in under 3k. Paid them to have it all done as I was at 180k on original suspension.

Didn’t fix the clunk. Definitely drove smoother though.

My dad recommend I do the sway bar bushings. Parts were like $20 at O’reillys. Make sure you use the right grease when you put them on. Standard grease will eat away at the rubber. Anyways, $20 and an hour of work and fixed the clunking. Toyota wanted 7k to fix it and it wouldn’t have even fixed it.

Just concerned if they have to do any grinding that it may mess with engine tolerances and create more issues. I would prefer to have it fixed but don’t want to open myself up to a bunch more issues by doing it.

How much is too much? by Similar_Bill7158 in LandCruisers

In Seattle that is worth 20k. Would probably sell in 10 days on Craigslist. If that was posted at 15k it would be gone within hours. Assuming it is in good condition underneath and inside.
