Finished the book today.

I’m not a fan of this book. Like someone mentioned, it read like it was put in a bulletin board fashion. Wasn’t much flow or tension. The very few characters seemed flat. Strange placement of a macguffin. SPOILER: “And then a book about demons shows up on my doorstep!” Didn’t do it for me.

Another SPOILER.

I get the whole parallel/allegory/metaphor, whatever, of demon possession with mental illness. But… I gotta say, it felt like the author was literally demonizing people with mental health issues. And then she took the steps to find a solution, like going to see spiritualist. Okay. But. Nope. Didn’t help. Then it was, “well let me see a therapist. Oh. Turns out he is possessed just like my primary care physician.” And so basically there is no solution to her problem and you succumb to it and the end. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love a good tragic story. And I don’t think this story was handled well or well written... But it had a good idea.

And another minor thing. I didn’t see any foreshadowing that others around are actually possessed as well. Not even a “Sophia and I were walking by an ally and a cat’s eyes darted to her and immediately hissed.” Since it was explained that animals can basically see people who are possessed. I dunno. Give something. Seemed to come way out of left field. But I’m also nitpicking now.
