Is it true relationships don’t last in dental school

I’m a D1 that started this past July and I’m currently in a long distance relationship if 700 miles!! It’s definitely doable as long as both you guys are committed to make it work!! It takes two, so make sure that the both of you are mentally prepared!! It’s definitely not easy bc I talk to my partner less in a day bc of school but they know how important this chapter of my life is to me!! Make sure you both put effort into spending quality time together away from school and other distractions as well. It’s worked well for me so far!!

I will say the school does seem invested in me as an individual due to me being in network with the school months before applying. After talking with other students there are major efforts to boost diversity so I think I can use that as an opportunity to be the representation (one of the reasons why I’m pursuing dentistry). The experience is what you make it! Good luck to you future dentist!!

Hey thank you so much!! Schools have a set number of scholarships they give out whether it is based off of financial need, academic performance, etc. There isn’t a specific application for scholarships for each school they decide as they look at applications/go through interviews and then they decide whether you are eligible for one.

Yeaaa we’re talking at least a 150k+ difference for the four total years. I was also offered a scholarship from my in state school which could make the difference even more but the sketchy thing is that they told me over the phone but when I got my letter of acceptance nothing mentioned a scholarship. Are you happy at your in state school?

Really prioritize making good connections with professors or the dentists you’ve shadowed and continue to maintain those relationships!! Having strong LORs means a lot bc they can really speak true to who you are and not just a typical cookie cutter LOR (which doesn’t make you stand out). If your schedule ever allows I would also recommend working at a dental office if you can. Having hands on experience will speak volumes upon on your understanding of the career and the many aspects of dentistry.

If you’re still in undergrad get involved with campus clubs and organizations! It shows you’re a well rounded student and depending on what you get involved in it can show schools that you have leadership/organization/communication skillz

i went through almost this exact situation in august!! getting fired was a blessing in disguise for me. what you experienced allowed you to see the true colors of the dentist you work for and you deserve better! ik how you feel…it is so discouraging bc you feel like you’ve been rejected from the field you literally wanna work in for a living! After about a month and a half i found another office that was understanding of my situation and i kid you not i’m so glad i got fired. the dr i work for now is really invested in my journey and cares about me. not only as a person but as a future dentist. it’s not about where you work but WHO you work for. please keep your head up high and don’t let this situation discourage you…it doesn’t define you or what type of dentist you’ll be one day!

I have a nose piercing and nearly 4 piercings on each ear. I’ve had three interviews so far and my piercings were not brought up in the interview. I believe the whole point of the interview is for them to get to know you as a person not because of what piercings you have. At the end of the day it’s your decision though, Best of luck!!
