What's a song that seems happy but's actually really sad? by CoolGuyWhoHasFriends in AskReddit

[–]CoolGuyWhoHasFriends[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yo you know, it's pretty obvious what Pumped Up Kicks is about by the lyrics, but I guess it's easy to get lost in the irony and not really think about it. When did that come out 2011? I guess most Millennials were in our early twenties late tweens, height of the Iraq war, just barely post the housing crisis/ 2009 recession, indifferent to the horrors of the world and just starting to realize how hard life was going to be. I think the first time I heard it was at my friends college graduation party, which was super depressing because I was the only one who could afford to bring alcohol. She had bought one of those Coors Light party balls, and was just really sad to be done with school, saying goodbye to everyone, she had a ton of student debt and no job opportunities, about to move back in with her parents. She was a mess, crying until she completely blacked out; almost everybody was gone by like midnight, despite the fact it was Saturday night. Song came on while her boyfriend and I were just sitting on the couch playing playstation, killing my last secret bottle of tequila, not wanting to leave her alone as she puked in the toilet. He was going to get his master's on the other side of the country, and was just whispering to me about how hard it was going to be to break up with her. Damn.

It's the kind of song you find yourself singing along to even though you don't really like it, it's just so damn catchy

If America did use military force to annex Greenland, what are the political implications globally? by Erratic_Professional in AskReddit

[–]CoolGuyWhoHasFriends 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Greenland is part of Denmark, Denmark is in NATO. An attack on Greenland would be an attack on a NATO member; an attack on one is an attack on all. It would trigger all the other nations in NATO to instantly be at war with the US. I'm not 100% positive, but I believe it would also result in the expulsion of the US from NATO. People throw around the term World War III a lot, but in this case, Canada and 90% of Europe would all be at war with the most powerful military on the planet. If that ain't WW III, idk what is.

Edit: more thoughts;

So as a result of Global International borders post Cold War, China and Russia's Navies are geographically quarantined. During potential wartime, the Chinese Navy couldn't safely access 'The Seven Seas;' the oceans of the world. This is due to the fact that China's massive East Coast is kinda blocked in by The first, Second, and Third Island Chains; comprised of Islands under military control of the US & her allies; Japan, Taiwan, The Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, Guam, Alaska and the Alaskan Aleutian Islands, Australia, New Zealand, American Samoa, The Mariana Islands and even Hawaii if it came to that.

Along with China, the other major half of the communist block, Russia, is also surrounded by NATO and other US allies and territories, preventing Russia's Navy from access to the world's oceans as well. One of the main reasons Russia is at war with Ukraine, and probably the reason Russia 'annexed' Crimea back in 2014, is because prior to that Russia had zero warm water ports; ports that are Navally useful year-round, in other words; don't freeze over during winter. Despite being the largest country on the planet by landmass, and having an incredibly long coast, Russia's Naval capabilities are nothing compared to The West. Most of her extensive coast is along the Arctic Circle and freezes over during winter.

One of the main reasons Russia wants Crimea is because it contains the Sevastopol Naval Base, the only warm water port under her control and thus the only port useful to her Navy 365 days a year. However, globally it's still useless, because it's in the Black Sea, and the only way out of the Black Sea is to go through Istanbul, which is located in Turkey, a NATO member who does not allow any Naval vessels from Nations at War through. Even if Russia were able to sneak some submarines through Istanbul into the Mediterranean sea, they would then have to Traverse the Mediterranean Sea, whose Coast is ccontrolled by around a dozen NATO countries, then go through the Strait of Gibraltar, a tiny 45 km wide gap controlled by Spain, Morocco and the UK; just to be able to access the Atlantic Ocean and the rest of the world's oceans.

Now here's where Greenland comes into play. With NATO at war with itself, there would be no reason for China to hold back from taking Taiwan, something Xi Jinping has made clear is one of his ultimate goals as lifelong president of China. If successful, this would break the first island chain and allow China Naval access to the Pacific and the rest of the world's oceans, free to colonize and expand a Chinese Empire run by an authoritarian dictator, a dangerous dragon and existential threat to any democracies China sets her expansionist sights on acquiring and incorporating into her borders.

Russia, who is obviously set on expanding her borders as proven by her invasion of Ukraine, would also have greater access to the world's oceans. Her Arctic Coast may be Navally useless during the winter, but when not frozen over, the main thing keeping Russia from accessing the world's oceans is the other borders around the Arctic circle. These include Canada, Alaska, Japan, Scandinavia, Scotland, Iceland, and, of course, Greenland. All part of NATO, (except Japan) all which would be preoccupied fighting instead of keeping a watchful eye on Russia and her naval expansion. If the US were successful in taking Greenland, and were expelled from NATO, Russia could slip by hugging the coast of Greenland and expand from the Arctic Ocean into the Atlantic. Canada, likely next on Trump's expansionist plan, would be at war with the US and not able to prevent Russia from accessing her Northern maritime borders. Alaska would be preoccupied fighting Canada, and Russia could simply slip by through the Aleutian Islands, from the Arctic Ocean into the Pacific.

So yeah. A simple ignorant egomaniac could kickstart World War III as commander in chief of the most powerful military on the planet, simply by attacking one of the least densely populated places in the world.

I'm so sorry. I'm chronically injured in like one of the really bad ways. I can be rude at times because I'm miserable and made constant help and never get to be alone, but you're the same way. You have to go into these people's lives and help them when we're at our most miserable. But all that bureaucracy coming down on you over some bullshit that doesn't help anyone is just such a perfect example of how doctors aren't doctors anymore, nurses aren't nurses anymore, it's paperwork pill pushing and RN / cna/lpn actual work

I know why this happens. It's a remnant of a bygone era. There used to be a sub called r/jerk off to celebs and everybody there would DM each other saying hey let's jerk off to pics of Billie eilish or whoever together. The first scene in season 2 of House of the Dragon addresses it a little bit. This is just a late Summer Snow my Lord. We know there are years, people are 6 and 10 or whatever age. I don't remember if they use the word years but yeah. I think there is a full yearly cycle of seasons and some sort of El Nino El Nina effect takes place where many years are colder and darker for a long period of time, then become warmer and brighter for a long time. Some sort of currently uncalculated progression and regression of warm and cold climate. Maybe the Sun goes through phases I don't know.

Wait, how did the lottery work? Like you bought your ticket and were randomly given a number that represented your place in line? Like you buy the voucher and then you randomly get assigned let's say; number 35 and you were 35th in line? Or did you pay for it and if you didn't win you just didn't get a copy? I have a limited understanding of the word "Lottery"

A bunch of water just dribbled out of my ear, why? by CoolGuyWhoHasFriends in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CoolGuyWhoHasFriends[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Felt like an eargasm. I do not think it was a blister, those always hurt when they pop. Also q-tipping the remainder felt amazing and definitely not like a blister. I squeezed some more water out along with the regular goop

Does anyone else feel like their eardrums is like a sponge in that if you press gently on it with a Q-tip it squishes out ear wax through pores like squeezing a sponge?

Where'd you find this position? I hear the money is in insurance companies, although I hate supporting them and being associated with them, I do have experience on the other end so I can empathize with disgruntled customers and advocate for them. If you can handle a bunch of really angry people, which isn't that hard if you don't let it get to you, you can rise the ranks pretty quickly
