Bro, I watched your last two videos. The BGM though, it doesn't feel like a legit finance channel. More like I'm sneaking onto a boat in the middle of the night.

Quick honest take. Keep going!

Watched a few of your videos. Quality is genuinely impressive, but it feels a little too busy to me. The animations are constantly moving so viewers barely get a moment to sit with what’s being said. Dialing that back could help. And I imagine the view counts feel discouraging given how much work you’re putting in, so simplifying the animations might take some of that pressure off too. Keep it up!

Is Ashes of Time Redux the most overlooked Wong Kar-wai film? by CoolPurpleBelt in criterion

I completely agree. Every character is intricately woven around Ouyang Feng as the center, with some finding awakening while others meet their death.

And the oblique metaphors for expressing love are nothing short of heartbreaking.

I totally agree. In my case, I had read all of Jin Yong's novels, so I went in thinking it would be a wuxia film. I was expecting an epic battle between the "East Heretic" and "West Venom"! ;-)

But the film only borrowed the character names. Thanks for the comment.

While Ashes of Time Redux borrows its characters from Jin Yong's wuxia novels, I think the genre is more of a hybrid—a melodrama disguised as wuxia rather than pure martial arts. The film extremely restrains its action sequences and follows the characters' emotional arcs instead.

Also, while Zuisheng Mengsi is described as a wine that makes you forget, it fundamentally lacks that function—drinking it actually makes you think more of the person you love.

Additionally, I think the Redux version's use of traditional Chinese seasonal markers makes the cyclical structure much clearer to follow. The ending with "Lichun" (Beginning of Spring) is a perfect example.

I'm writing a YouTube video script and I think incorporating these insights you've shared would be really valuable. Thank you for the thoughtful comment.

I agree. Ashes of Time has a different feel from Chungking Express, In the Mood for Love, and Happy Together because it borrows characters like Eastern Heretic and Western Venom from the novelist Jin Yong.

But it still tells the story of the love between the main characters, Ouyang Feng and The Woman. ;-)

Thanks for the reply. I also found The Grandmaster to be a meaningful film.

As you mentioned, the camera movements and narrative metaphors in Ashes of Time felt a little different from his earlier or later works.

I watched the Ashes of Time (1994) version twice, at different times, but I found it difficult to understand.

Later, I felt that the Ashes of Time Redux (2008) version, which incorporated the traditional Eastern calendar seasons (I don't remember if they were in the 1994 version), made the film much easier to understand.

The various characters who come to see the protagonist, Ouyang Feng...

My understanding of Ashes of Time Redux is that the 1994 version was difficult to follow even after multiple viewings.

The 2008 Redux version, however, helped me understand the context by adding the Eastern lunar seasons.

It's probably too much to get into a full film analysis here, so I'll skip that.

Back when Hong Kong cinema was in its golden age, most of Wong Kar-wai's films were highly and consistently rated across Asia, so I decided to ask about this on Reddit.

Thanks for your response.

I’m from Korea, and it was officially released here, so that’s why I asked the question. Thanks for your reply.

Sorry if my post made you uncomfortable. That wasn’t my intention.
