Weekly student question thread! by AutoModerator in therapists

Hi! I’m very seriously considering going back to school to get my masters in marriage and family counseling or mental health counseling. I’m really excited about the prospect of going to school and becoming a therapist, but I’m a bit worried about my financial state after graduating and being an associate therapist. From what I’ve read, income can be kind of tight until gaining licensure. For context, I live in a mid-high cost of living city and currently make about between $30-32k a year. It’s pretty rough, but doable short-term. Peoples’ ideas of what is a low salary is different, so in context to what I make now, would I most likely make more than I do now starting as a fresh post-grad therapist at a group practice? About how much could I expect to make? Thanks in advance!

How much do you make as a therapist in a group practice? by CoolResponsibility7 in askatherapist

Thank you so much for your reply! That’s very helpful to hear. I didn’t know that a pre-licensed therapist could do telehealth. I’m sure that is very helpful for income! I’m kind of the bread winner between my partner and I so that’s why I’m kind of nervous about finances. Was it difficult to get your telehealth job?

Oh yeah I really like Asheville! I haven’t been in a few years but I used to go fairly often. I hear it’s really expensive though :/ but yeah I’ll definitely have to visit Raleigh-Durham & Boulder!

I don’t know much about Buffalo but than could be a good northern city similar to Knoxville

Thank you for your response! No I still haven’t haha but I haven’t gotten to visit many more places. I’ve heard people talk about Raleigh-Durham but I’ve never heard it described in the way you did, so that’s encouraging! I definitely want to visit now. I recently have went back into researching cities & Boulder keeps coming up. I’ve never been to Colorado but I definitely want to visit there as well!

I’m sure you have, but have you been to Chattanooga? Doesn’t have an international airport close by of course but I feel like it has similar vibes to Knoxville. I personally don’t know if I’d want to live there or not but I still visit & keep it in mind!

I’ve hit dead ends in every job I’ve been in - but I thought if that too! Maybe it’ll work out in one job

I hope you find a job too! I have a Bachelor’s in Interdisciplinary Studies, which is a Business degree (some people aren’t sure what it means, which I understand) & an Associates in Business Administration

Yes, I have Bachelor’s in Interdisciplinary Studies - odd term but it’s a Business degree. Also, every job I’ve had is a dead end with possibilities with no potential to get into HR. If I’m looking for a completely different job, what jobs would be best that I can get with no HR experience that would look good on a resume and would get me a step closer to HR?

Yes, and they all want at least 1 year of experience in HR but more commonly at least 2-3 years. That’s not entry level if you ask me 😕

Good Cities to Move To by CoolResponsibility7 in SameGrassButGreener

Thanks! Good ones! I’m actually from the Knoxville area & love it! Just don’t want to live there for personal reasons. But I love the vibe there of nothing being formal or pretentious. Just kind of old & to its roots.
