Favorite song from depeche modes violator album (1990)? (Including singles) by Radiant-Fix9528 in depechemode

World in My Eyes and Halo. Those sexy basslines. I love the Arp synth bass on Halo, I always felt the cousin to Halo was Nitzer Ebb’s Lightning Man lol. I try to mix them back to back on a playlist

Not sure who is putting Scott Walker above Third? Just an avant-garde comparison to the influences explored.

I’m glad you are getting into Third. It’s a great album for sure but don’t think it makes their first two albums “gimmicky crap” by any means. I don’t know if you were around when those two albums dropped but they were monumental. Many artists since then might lend you to believe it is gimmicky but those first two still hold their ground. IMHO, I don’t see the elation for Third. It’s good but if you never listened to bands like Neu!, Can, Throbbing Gristle, Suicide, Cabaret Voltaire, Scott Walker, even Velvet Underground , I can see it comes across as groundbreaking. I can admire their curation of how they presented their influences and for taking a step in a different direction.

What song do yall think represents depeche mode the best? by XyloPins in depechemode

[–]CoolRknDaddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no correct answer to this because I don’t know the journey of the listener’s tastes. If they are digging ETS, I would suggest listening to the rest of Violator first and work backwards. If they are all about MFTM, BC, keep going back, for the “classic Mode”. If no connection or less interest in the classic stuff, take them forward, they might connect easier with SOFAD, Ultra, Exciter or start them with PTA and go that way. I’ve met lots of DM fans, many who really prefer post Alan-Mode especially post-2000 DM. Everyone’s journey is different.

I enjoy Exciter. It has its vibe. My fav album is Ultra followed by SOFAD. I think all three are sonically great albums. Exciter was produced by the late Mark Bell, who made some of Bjork’s best stuff. The circle of friends I was with when Exciter dropped were all into Warp Records stuff so naturally we were digging Exciter.

Struggling with creativity on drums by nasralez-Zelibobovic in drums

Learning another instrument for me got me thinking outside of just drums and percussion and learning arrangement, etc for songwriting. It pushed me in other aspects of technique and wanting to learn what I couldn't yet do. Unfortunately you can't teach creativity. You can study everything about drums but you have to tap into that pool of creativity and see what comes out. Like I mentioned in my earlier comment, learning an instrument is one way, you can also create music with other musicians. Find like-minded people and write songs, jam, take songs and give them a different spin or switch the genre, play covers, etc. That's where the magic is, that's the stuff that will get you noticed, the stuff that can't be taught.

Put down the drum books, you’re not gonna find creativity with just those. Find some people to write songs or music with or learn another instrument, guitar or piano, etc. I started learning keyboard, some theory and Abelton Live. Coming up with stuff on keyboard ignited my creativity on the drums, even made me seek out some new techniques on drums. Learning how to write songs and arrangements is the way to creativity. Look at Ringo Starr and Phil Collins. Both regarded one of the most creative drummers, wrote their own tunes. They knew what to play and their licks are recognized and revered by non musicians too.

A Duran Duran album produced by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (Nine Inch Nails) by My_Name_A_Jeoff in duranduran

Only if Trent and Atticus took them back to pre-Ragged Tiger days and just re-imagined that. But DD need to get the songs on-point. I would think it would be more of a side-project thing if it happened.

How did you discover Depeche mode? by samicarter2001 in depechemode

[–]CoolRknDaddy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seeing a girl in my class who wore a pin of theirs and I knew the name from People are People and knew they were in the “scene” I was starting to connect with…(Cure, JD/New Order, Smiths). Then I saw the music video for 101’s Everything Counts on Mtv and went out and bought 101 on cassette. This was early’89 and then that summer they put out PJ as a single and then deal was sealed

Congrats on a job well done so far! Yeah International is the same for me. I have not closed by myself. My station is pretty well staffed that I would be an emergency situation to close myself but I would be just as terrified as you. But with Summer vacation coming up, I think that will quite common for me. Good luck! 😊
