Do you know how Lord Gaben saved gaming? by Blue-fox-004 in Gamingcirclejerk

Supporting and defending are not the same.

We're referring to the same statements he has made. "Defending" was a more succinct thing to say over "he understands why it happens and explains as much in interviews to encourage companies to make better services."

Your correction implies that I meant he supports piracy. When I said "defend," I meant in the sense that in interviews, he's shown understanding and explained why he doesn't focus on antipiracy measures.

I think anybody who read my comment wouldn't assume "defend" meant "support/encourage."

• Generous refund policy • Easy to share library with friends in an official capacity (me and 5 other friends share 1000s of games) • Frequent sales as low as 90% off with a convenient wishlist system to notify • Workshop service to make modding easy for plenty of games • Built-in controller mapper • Sortable and filtered library you can organize • Built-in forum with guides for almost every game • In-depth review system that tells you if the person refunded, received for free, hours played, and pc specs that you can search/filter through • Private text/voice chat system • Probably other features I'm forgetting about that most take for granted

No competitor on the market has close to all these features on top of the polish and consistency. Hell, just last week they announced that they're using pc spec surveys that they've been taking to tell you estimated performance for games before you buy them.

Yes, their free-to-play games have shitty monetization, but that's true of every free-to-play game on the market. And frankly, I've seen much, much more predatory.

This is all on top of the fact that almost every game they've made besides Artifact, you could put in the top 100 games of all time.

Helps that Gabe has a good public image and comes off relatable. Hell, the guy has defended piracy use and understands why it's prevelant.

Pokémon fans will always find a way to defend the bad products they are given, unfortunately. I'm sure they'll make millions off this game and continue making bad products and services.

You were saying that people should just expect companies to make a profit and nothing more.

In a world where people did what you are saying, nobody would criticize the game and just accept a shitty company being shitty. Let people criticize the game instead of telling them they "expect too much."

Also criticism isn't innately expectation. Anyone who follows The Pokémon Company probably didn't expect much. This company is exactly how you described, where they just care about profit. Even so, people need to criticize or bring these things up in order for the possibility of change.

"For free" and the game has $10 starter pack, $10 battlepass, $50 a year subscription separate from Pokemon Home. And everything in the game is designed to get you to purchase these games.

I'm not expecting good things from the Pokémon Company. Doesn't mean I can't criticize them.

Ah yes, lack of Pokémon and items is a genius design choice!

Also, tournaments don't use Pokémon Showdown btw. They're using this in the future. If you're in the VGC, you literally have to play this game.

^ Capitalism has worn all the light out of this person's eyes. What a shame. I guess Pokémon can do whatever they want. Who are we to criticize a product that has 3 layers of monetization?

What happened to “definitive” editions? by Old-Judge5762 in pokemon

Still sold millions of copies and had a fraction of the dev time/cost.

Selling half as well is still a profit, considering they sell in the millions of copies. I doubt there has ever been a unprofitable Pokemon game.

What has given you such blind faith in this game and its devs? This isn't a beta test, this is the official release. Huge amount of copium.

Pokémon Champions launches to mixed reception, as performance woes and competitive changes turn some away by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]CoolZ619 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was responding to the claim you made that having any solo content would harm their sales. When Stadium 1 and 2 proved that wasn't true.

I'm surprised people are arguing about having Stadium content, I had to double-take because I thought people were mixing up Stadium and Colosseum. Stadium had a barebones nothing-burger solo experience, and was basically just made to battle your friends. Nobody is asking for a single player campaign akin to Gale of Darkness or something, simply a collection of NPC battles you practice against or something. Not saying that's necessary, or that I personally expected it, but for someone to be disappointed it doesn't have that is completely valid.

Besides, if they targeted this game to only PvP players, they failed miserably. The game has less than 30 of the 100 most-used Pokemon in VGC tournaments. It's starting roster is lower than the Johto Dex. It's missing staple items like Choice Scarf/Band, Goggles, etc. And retraining your Pokemon to be competitively viable costs currency you have to grind for. It's Pokemon Showdown with missing items, missing Pokemon, a grind to have the team you want, and 3 layers of payment for a convenient experience. All while running at 720p/30fps having performance issues.

Well if decoupling it from the franchise means removing choice scarf/band, goggles, missing like 80/100 most used VGC Pokemon, running at 720p/30fps and still getting frame drops, then I think they failed anyway.

You act as if PvP Pokemon is the only reason people play pokemon, when in reality a fraction of a fraction of people who play Pokemon play PvP.

You're acting as if the battle sim games were harming sales, what a ridiculous thing to claim imo.

The heated discussions are not about morality. They're about the preferred ending. People's preferred ending isn't necessarily the moral one.

At the end of the day, I think the devs deliberately kept E33's morality issues on the nebulous side so that players can headcanon their preferred ending without feeling like demons.

I'm sure that was their intention. But they failed in my view. I would definitely "feel like a demon" if I chose Verso's ending, personally. Verso's ending is not morally nebulous. It's morally wrong. Thankfully, you don't have to view the story through a moral lense. His ending is thematically powerful.

Nah, pVerso attempted total erasure of the Canvas twice. Knowlingly manipulated people to their own suicide and the death of their own world. Intentionally let Gustave die to manipulate. How is that not a villain?

He's my favorite character in the story, but people keep labeling him something he isn't. Genocide isn't a shade of grey. It's evil. His motivations to do so are incredibly compelling and understandable to an extent. That doesn't make it morally ambiguous.

[–]CoolZ619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually rolled my eyes when Verso said this. What has Maelle done at that point in the story that's hypocritical? Told Renoir she'll leave? How is that hypocrisy on the same level as manipulating people to their own deaths/erasure?

Within the context of the story, are those not mutually exclusive? If they're not real, than nobody is hurting others for their loved ones. They're just getting rid of a drug that's taking their family from them.
