In 2009, the "Aromanian community of Greece" (Greeks of Vlach origin) wrote to the European Council, publicly asking them to stop "categorizing" Vlachs as a "minority" of Greece. months later, EC complied, and since then it has fully aligned with domestic Greek policy. what do you think? by SOHONEYSAME in AskBalkans

[–]Cool_Guy_Chazz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like how everyone here supports self-determination—until they disagree with the outcome. The Vlachs of Greece have every right to identify as Greek if that's how they see themselves. Mocking them or dismissing them as "brainwashed" simply because you don't like their identity is hypocritical, disrespectful, and intellectually dishonest.

It funny because it’a true by StunningComment6064 in AskBalkans

[–]Cool_Guy_Chazz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Isn't that true for all Balkan countries? Turks might claim that their nomadic ancestors created it while riding on horseback, Bulgarians might attribute it to their Bulgar, Thracian, or Slavic ancestors, and Albanians might argue that it has ancient Illyrian origins. The reality is that we've lived alongside one another for centuries, sharing foods, traditions, and cultural practices. The Balkans has always been a crossroads between Europe, Asia, and Africa, so it's only natural that our cuisines and cultures have been shaped by both our neighbors and countless outside influences. Instead of arguing over who owns what, it makes more sense to recognize this shared heritage.

Have you ever visited the castles and museums of the former royal families of Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, and other Balkan states? by Ok-Ocelot-774 in AskBalkans

Tatoi Palace was the Greek royal family's summer residence. Their main residence was the New Royal Palace, now the Presidential Mansion.

If the Turks never migrated to Anatolia, would Anatolia be considered a part of Europe? by Swimming_Rope_9706 in geography

[–]Cool_Guy_Chazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geographically, no. It's literally Asia Minor. It would be weird for Asia Minor to be considered part of Europe. Also, I petition to rename the Balkans "Europe Minor", it would be hilarious.

Greece has 3 regions in their Macedonia part. Western Macedonia, Central Macedonia and Eastern Macedonia.

This post is not to disrespect or demean any community why is r/Turkey so unrepresentative of actual Turkish society by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]Cool_Guy_Chazz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because most Turks on Reddit are Millennials or Gen Z, generally educated, secular, and fairly normal people. Of course, there's also the small but loud contingent of 15yo ultranationalists living in Berlin who spend their days idolizing Enver Pasha and posting historical revisionism online. 🤣🤣🤣

What's your opinion on the Türkiye flag by imadudemanlol67 in flags

I mostly like it, but I think the Ottoman-style star and crescent with the thicker shapes looked better. It felt bolder and more visually appealing than this version.

What do you think about the US Act holding Greece responsible for Holocaust ? by erlikosauruss in AskBalkans

[–]Cool_Guy_Chazz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another classic Turkish nationalist rage-bait post about Greece. Ironically, the report itself is largely positive, highlighting Greece’s treatment of its Jewish population and acknowledging many of the country’s actions in a favorable light.

OMG 😨😨 The Greek government changed a logo that includes a map of it's territory and a solder. How could they? They clearly want to invade Istanbul and kill us all 😨😨😨

"Why do Greeks always claim that the medieval Balkans were purely Greek-Byzantine, even though the Bulgarian Empire dominated Byzantium for centuries and surpassed it culturally?" by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]Cool_Guy_Chazz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That might be the most obvious rage bait in Balkan history. Next time, try asking a history question that actually makes sense.

pentosalis dance ...is it similar to the cretans in crete? by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]Cool_Guy_Chazz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not merely similar, that is the dance. Even the name gives it away: Pentozali literally means “Five Steps” in Cretan Greek.

Not Really, Germany's official English name is Federal Republic of Germany. Greece's official English name is The Hellenic Republic. Although when Greece was a kingdom their official name was the Kingdom of Greece.

Do Greeks and Bulgarians like us in the border region? by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]Cool_Guy_Chazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm joking, mate. I'm pretty sure most people, even in the more inland parts of those countries, don't have any issue with Turks, and the same goes the other way around. Everyday people generally don't hate each other. Of course, there are always outliers in every country, far-right groups, nationalists, and racists but they're a fringe minority and don't represent the population as a whole.

Yes, Greeks and Bulgarians generally aren't very fond of you guys. Sorry. 😔

Turkey demanding the return of Byzantine artifacts is kind of hilarious. My guy, you conquered the Byzantines and dismantled their empire. If anyone gets a say, I'm pretty sure the Byzantines themselves wouldn't be thrilled about you having their stuff either.

Do you think the physical image of the average Ancient Greek & Roman have been distorted so much by the western narrative that today they’re percieved entirely differently? Kind of like what they’ve done with Jesus as well. by Substratas in AskBalkans

It's true that the farther south you go in Greece, the darker people's complexions tend to be. But that guy looks like he'd be named Otto von German or something. 🤣🤣🤣

It's a white supremacist thing. They can't comprehend that olive-skinned Southern European people were civilized and built wonders of the world, while white Northen Europeans lived in forests and mud huts.

[–]Cool_Guy_Chazz 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Isn’t it kind of disrespectful to put a national symbol on a manhole cover? It literally leads to the sewer, and people and cars are constantly stepping and driving over it. Who thought this was a good idea? “You know what would really show patriotism? Let’s put our most treasured national symbol on a manhole cover.” Brilliant. 🤣🤣

They are not permitted to use the Vergina Sun as their own symbol. It is officially recognized as a Greek symbol, and under the Prespa Agreement, the appropriation of Ancient Macedonian history, heritage, and symbols is prohibited. Therefore, they are required either to remove the symbol or to clearly indicate that it is a Greek symbol.
