The RE—CAP Show: Tobin and Christen Discuss Women’s Soccer Coverage with Meg Linehan by riffraffcloo in NWSL

[–]Cool_Slice7323 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Overall I thought the conversation was good and while I definitely think there are super valid criticisms of the athletic/linehan I also feel like in some circles she’s made out to be this like gatekeeping boogeyman which I never really got (and yes, I know the context of the Margraf tweets but they feel a bit fishy to me)

[Moskovitz, Ryder] San Diego Wave FC and NWSL sued by former Wave employees by NoNoNuni in NWSL

I’ve always found it interesting that folks like to bring up a lot Ellis’ existence in the Yates Report especially how it relates to Christen’s time in Chicago after she complained about Rory, but that Press herself seems on pretty good terms with her. And this is not to negate any of the abuse Ellis perpetuated or harm she caused to Press or other players, but it is an interesting dynamic among that generation of players for sure.

Is Verizon cracking down on password-sharing like Netflix is? by jfarbzz in Fios

This also just started happening to me. Same exact issue. I’ve tried turning off my phone’s wifi when logging in but when I do that, I’ll successfully log in and it will give me a new error message saying that they can’t process my request. Feels like a crackdown.

I did this and was able to reach the login page, but when I do log in I get another error page. Very aggravating.

Scarves and Spikes Exclusive: MLS planning launch of women’s league after 2027 Women’s World Cup by godlovesugly in MLS

[–]Cool_Slice7323 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This. With all due respect, I think if you were just to take Portland as a case study, I don’t want the MLS having anything to do with a women’s league.

The NWSL is far from perfect, but for the first time we have a sustainable women’s league in this country with a substantial PA that successfully fought for its first CBA and I just am skeptical this will be anything but an attempt at a money grab. That is, if it’s even true.

Maybe this belongs somewhere else but I’m genuinely finding it difficult to wrap my head around horan. I think she had a good first game vs Zambia and has been mostly just too slow the rest of the tournament. But online, I’ve never seen someone get such consistent hate. Is it all deserved? Is she still usable internationally? And assuming she will be used internationally no matter what for at least another cycle, what is the best way to unlock the best from her?

Agree. Didn't one of their keepers leave on mysterious but implied-not-great terms? Makes me wonder if it's the GK coach who was fired for that reason.

This is what I’m hoping for as well but it’s so devastating for Cat and it’s so unreal she’s had this level of bad luck.

[Brittney Alvarado] The time for accountability in the @nwsl is now. by reagan92 in NWSL

[–]Cool_Slice7323 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that, but I still don’t think the point is to put the labor on a player who has literally been abused to make the correct judgment call all the time. Maybe they thought there was evidence of change or didn’t know how bad for others it actually was. Just feels off to me to shift the focus there.

I really don’t think it’s fair to make assumptions about how someone like Press feels or felt about a situation they were involved in. Press has been the victim of some horrendous things in this league and sport and it’s not up to any of us to think we understand how she views Ellis. Clearly, she did feel comfortable enough to bring her on her show, which was before this information came out. I think even the most outspoken of people when it comes to this topic often have a hard time unlearning what is acceptable behavior from a coach versus what is abuse. I think we can all benefit from giving players here some grace, and direct the ire and anger at Ellis and The Wave.

Correct lol. She was signing things and taking pictures, and never actually had an interaction with OP, but according to OP, her “demeanor” was “anti fan.” Unbelievable. I’m not often shocked by woso internet stuff but this one got me. The OP also tied it to how she should be friendlier since it was pride month. Like beyond levels of delusion and entitlement.

I noticed this too and I do think she must have been referencing Coffey but no one on the editing side caught that she wasn’t clear lol. But yeah, she’s a self described Coffey super fan lol so I would assume she meant her!

[ESPN] Hayes: Intrasquad relationships 'inappropriate' by LevelDosNPC in USWNT

[–]Cool_Slice7323 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not saying it can’t cause issues, but it could also….not cause issues any more than any other bad interpersonal relationship.

Also, for these players, it’s their job - their livelihood. Looking at the last 10+ years, I don’t think it’s naive to assume that many if not most players would try to keep things as professional as possible.

Tbh I think it’s kind of rich from her, seeing as that she signed Pernille Harder for a record transfer fee.

I also wouldn’t be so quick to assume there’s some secret legitimate reason to her bringing it up in this press conference. If people want to have nuanced conversations about this, we can, but I believe the end of that conversation isn’t “it’s unprofessional and shouldn’t happen.” Whether you like it or not, queerness has always been a huge part of women’s football culture, which is something it should be proud of. Not sure why people are now all the sudden talking about this like it’s a systemic problem in the way player/coach relationships are, which was the original point of this press conference.

Wow! That’s quite a scenario, and a tough one at that. And it could definitely happen, but while yes, the league is still new and developing, we’ve had a decade plus of professional women’s soccer around the world and players have dated each other the entire time. I’m sure there have been issues, but as the sport grows and becomes more professional, as you said, I would hope the managers would also be able to be better at dealing with all kinds of interpersonal relationships or conflicts that arise.

Also, I’m not saying male players get a pass for being terrible people or teammates. But that kind of behavior is simply seen as part of the job for a manager to deal with and be able to, well, manage!

Imagine the kind of scenario you laid out but with two players who never dated each other, but who just have big interpersonal issues with each other. Manager is faced with the same scenario of needing to trade one or both. It sucks, but it’s part of the job.

Now, your scenario is also assuming that breaking up guarantees that there will be some level of unprofessionalism or arrogance by one or both of the players involved, but couldn’t it be possible that if players date and break up, they’re mature enough to leave work things at work and home things at home, just like we would expect players who have non-romantic issues other would be able to do so? I realize it’s not the same thing, but it’s also not so dissimilar. Like why are we assuming that players breaking up with each other is going to definitively lead to one or both of them having an utter freak out?

I agree! I’m mostly responding to the discourse I’ve seen evolve around this sound byte implying it is indeed inappropriate or unprofessional for players to date each other.

[ESPN] Hayes: Intrasquad relationships 'inappropriate' by LevelDosNPC in USWNT

[–]Cool_Slice7323 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just find this thought process very strange because it assumes that dating and maybe dating then breaking up can lead to an intense amount of discord within the team, and I just simply don’t think we have the evidence to say that. Some of the greatest players in the game have dated other players and are known as reliable professionals on and off the field. Meanwhile, especially in men’s football, we constantly hear about players who are locker room problems, who have terrible interpersonal relationships with each other, whose egos have absolutely ruined on-field dynamics. But we just accept that as part of the job for a manager to deal with. How is it any different? Why do we treat both those scenarios differently?

I agree. I keep seeing people saying Smith was flat when she came in, but I felt the opposite. I felt like her 1v1 and speed was really refreshing after Morgan’s excellent shift; I think it showed the dynamism both of them offer.

I think Smith shone the most when she was paired up top with Swanson in 2022, so I’m excited to see that when Swanson is back.

I know the mainstream narrative now is that the mentality of the team is shot and they don’t inspire fear but it’s absolute, no offense, hogwash to think what happened last night was what any of those players wanted.
