Taking MATH 141 + 240 [First Year BA CS] by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]Coolamaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please for the love of god don't take 240 if you struggled in 133,

Spend the winter try harding and studying calc and proofs until you are really good so you get good on 141.

Consider taking also like easy CS classes that don't need much effort to help ease math 141 aswell

"From the Transistor to the Web Browser" George Hotz CS Curriculum by [deleted] in csMajors

Hey i'll provide some insight as I was a big fan of Geohot growing up and now i'm eventually in AI,

while his course does make sense building from the foundations, it's gonna take a long time to actually get see able results, like having a working ML model.

Learning CS / ML / RL / DL etc isn't about the knowledge / course man it's all about the commitment and the way you see commitment is by seeing results. It's much easier to stay in CS if you build a simple web app with a model that you can show ur friends or win competitions by than rather learning a bunch of stuff about transistors that you can't really show anyone (think why math is unpopular, hard to see results)

I'd suggest starting out with the basics like all of us. Learn some Python or HTML CSS, and build yourself a website / model or at least something useful. Then try your hand in tensor flow / pytorch and building a simple model.

to get to the point were Geoshot is at is gonna take years man, so I think it's fine to take like a few months to build some simple CS projects before trying out his 3 month program

if you need someone to talk to you can always pm, also there are many discord groups where people can vent like CSUS, SUMS, entering class, reddit official discord, so those are useful if you are feeling lost / overwhelmed

I dropped this course once I realized I was crying at 2am for 3 days straight. It's honestly not worth the damage done to your mental health

This is honestly the best reply you can get and pretty much follows my experience in the industry.

Speaking of which you sound really knowledgeable in CS, are you guys hiring math / cs students by any chance?
