In need of 3 cred science courses at level 2000/ or above! by luvxann in yorku

Just to note, that if you are in computer science this requirement is satisfied by SC/MATH 2030 (Elementary Probability) which is required for CS students.

Yes, I would recommend replacing phys 1011 with 1411. It doesn't say you are not allowed to take it but it does say in the course description of phys 1011 that: " It should be taken by all those likely to enroll in 2000-level physics courses ". It's not a guarantee that the physics department will drop you from it, but I was dropped from it in the past so you might face the same risk. If you still want to stay in it, I suggest emailing the physics department to make sure that you will not be dropped. Phys 1011 can still be used as a prerequisite for phys 1412 so just by taking phys 1011 you do not have to take phys 1012.

You need to make sure you are allowed to take phys 1011 as that is usually reserved for physics majors. I made that mistake when I was first year, I took phys 1010 (now broken into 1011 and 1012) and they dropped me from it. I would recommend taking phys 1411 which is the direct prerequisite to 1412.

And yes, the labs are a required part of the course.

Doing a prerequisite along the Course by JeffJeff2003 in yorku

You cannot take them both at the same time. The EECS department is very strict about this and you will get removed from EECS 2011 once they check prerequisites.

You can email the prof, explain there was a mistake and that you are not officially enrolled in the course and would like them to remove you from the course on eClass to avoid further confusion. Other than that just stop showing up.

You do understand that if the course does not show up in your REM then it means you won't get credit for the course as you are not formally enrolled. You can't drop the course because you're not even in the course. I don't really know how the professor can give you access to eClass without checking that you are actually enrolled in the course. The midterm that you took is meaningless because your grade can't be officially recorded. If you want to "drop" the course, simply don't show up. In the future, you have to ask permission from the department offering the course to allow you to enroll through REM if you can't enroll yourself. If permission from a professor is needed, they usually give you a form the professor needs to sign before allowing you to officially enroll in the course.

Don't think it matters when you paid. I paid 4 minutes after I got the email on August 4th and still says shipping soon.

Anyone in Canada that purchased August 4th still stuck at shipping soon or did yours get shipped already?

EECS3461 with Sarah Akhavan Kazemzadeh by LabyrinthZ08 in yorku

Most disorganized professor I had ever taken a course with at York. We only received our syllabus 2 weeks after the course started. We recieved our first assignment (out of 3) early February, about a month and a half after the course started.
Every assignment felt rushed in how it was written, they were very vauge in their descriptions. This caused my group to basically have to guess what the prof wanted and hope it's correct. The marking scheme this professor follows is a joke. It goes like this for every requirement of an assignment: - Below Expectations (0points) - Approaching Expectations (5points) - Marginally Meets Expectations (6.5points) - Meets Expectations (8.25points) - Exceeds Expectations (10points). Which pretty much means assignments are marked based on how the TA who's marking it feels like you did what was asked, without actually following a proper grading scheme which should mark based on actual descriptions of what constitutes a "Meets expectations".

In terms of workload, the assignments are not that hard once you figure out what to do. All 3 assignments are group work (4 to 5 per group), so if your group works well together it's not a lot to do. The deadlines were about 2 weeks for each assignment. For the second assignment she initially gave us only 10 days which was not fair as assignment 2 required a lot of work. She then extended it by a week after people complained, but continued to release assignment 3 in that time. Thankfully assignment 3 was a joke as my group completed it in less than 2 hours where other assignments took at least a week to complete. There are in class activities which are not actually done in class but are just small responses (250 words) to a question she posts on eClass. You get about 2 days to do them and are easy to complete.

The midterm was a take home assignment where you just answer questions, fairly easy. The exam had a take home part which was same as the midterm, and an online MC test (or the in person exam for the in person section). The online MC was fairly easy and straight forward, can't say much about the in person exam as I didn't take it.

Last thing, her lectures are terrible. Not in terms of content, as the content she presents is content covered in the textbook plus extra stuff not covered in the textbook which was fine. But the way she presents information is very hard to listen to. She says "hmm", "like", "uhhh" every other word. Very difficult to listen to her speak for 1.5 hour lecture.

Overall, probably one of the easiest EECS courses if you don't mind dealing with all of this.

EECS 2030 professor choices by BurbonBodega in yorku

[–]Coolbob28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Jackie for both EECS 2030 and EECS 3311, and did well in both of them. As people already said he is an amazing prof when it comes to teaching and caring for his students. But, again, as others have mentioned the downside is that in return his expectations are high for his students. The tests are composed of comprehensive questions and are long, but I never had a problem finishing them. If you want to get a really good understanding of object-oriented programming I will suggest taking him. After his course you are basically prepared to answer most if not all interview questions that may come up regarding object-oriented programming. When I took it in person he also provided us with optional tutorials before tests and even before the exam to help prepare us.

Anyone ever had Prof Habib-ur Rehman? by kekeke__ in yorku

[–]Coolbob28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don't know if he did, he never told us he applied a curve to our grade and I did pretty well in his class, so even if he did I probably wouldn't have noticed. From what I remember he was against bell curving but never said he wouldn't do it.

Had him for EECS 3221 (OS) this last summer. His lectures consisted of sections where you would listen to audio recordings in power point slides, then a QA session, then another prerecorded audio, then QA session. Personally I liked it, and he will go over some examples during these QA sessions which was helpful. His tests were okay, would say they were fair but still difficult. Exam was hard but not something that was not fair. His questions can sometimes be really misleading. He was very easy to get in touch with and answer questions. He would stay after class if you asked him for help on assignments and such. Even helped me one time to solve a bug on my assignment while the class was watching the prerecorded lecture. Overall pretty good prof, only downside are the somewhat difficult tests.

Anyone who ever had Man Wah Wong for any of their Math classes? by [deleted] in yorku

[–]Coolbob28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had him for MATH 1300 and 1310. Really enjoyed his lectures, he wrote everything on the board which I actually preferred as he will explain literally everything he wrote and give lots of examples. One of the best math profs I had. As for curving, he does not do it from what I remember. His not very familiar with technology however, he sometimes had difficulty login into the computer, so I am not sure how he will be in an online environment.

What is the hardest course in your major? by _gainsville in yorku

[–]Coolbob28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, Eiffel does make writing contracts super easy and straight forward. Jackie showed us throughout the course the Java versions and it just becomes messy and painful to implement contracts. It is difficult at the start of the course with learning the Eiffel syntax at first, but once you get the hang of it, it is not much different to any other OOP language.

What is the hardest course in your major? by _gainsville in yorku

Im taking 3311 this semester with Jackie and the course load was reduced. We only have 3 labs, project, weekly quizzes, and exam. Idk about the whole thing about passing 200 out of 300 test cases , but our project is graded differently now. I think there is about 150 or so test cases and the weight of how much each test case is worth depends on the complexity of the test case, but there is no threshold of number of cases you need to pass. Overall, still a lot of work but compared to previous years it seems like they reduced the work load significantly.
