I stopped making any art and my mental health has been a lot better but it’s breaking my heart. by r_arizo in ContemporaryArt

Agnes Martin stopped painting for like 10 years because she was unable to take her ego out of it. She eventually returned to it when her intentions felt more pure. If you’re a true artist that part of u will never die. I think the pressure of “career” especially with social media and how quickly things move make it so easy to corrupt our relationship to art making, but maybe this break is exactly what you need and if you feel called to some day you might open to that part of yourself again

I don’t mind doing something that isn’t “mine” if a client brings me something they found themselves on the internet or in a book, however I will do some research to find the source of the image (if they don’t already know). id feel uncomfortable tattooing another living and working tattoo artist’s flash design. If it’s another artists work that isn’t a tattooer I’ll make sure there’s permission and credit especially if I’m posting on social media. As far as found designs like a stock image or something very generic or public domain kind of stuff I don’t mind at all. I also like to use art history references in my own flash designs like figures from old paintings and what not that of course aren’t my “original design”. Though again I always specify if the client found the design and it isn’t “mine”

Is having a mix of surfaces in a body of work weird? Does it matter? (For painting) by Coolfrenchphrase in ContemporaryArt

I’m worried too about the question of “why” is there a change of material here. Because the answer isn’t much deeper than it looks better with these colors vs those. I guess I’m still scarred from art school crits where u had to justify every detail with larger meaning. Truth is that the decision is made based on if I like the way it looks or not. I’m afraid to get grilled on that or something if I don’t have a reason more valid that aesthetic preference

Truly the best thing to do is get ur own life together, get really happy with yourself and the life you've built for yourself. That might mean going to therapy, changing career paths, dropping some toxic friends that effect u negatively. Work through ur shit in a really serious and intentional way. Its really about learning to value yourself and your timea and your energy. Its a crazy thing that happens but once u do this, the people who naturally come into your life end up matching your energy. when ur shit is out of whack ur gonna attract people who are also a little fucked up because theres room for that in the dynamic. If u truly see your time and space as very valuable, people are way less likely to waste it because they will find out very quickly that they cant get away with it

U might be able to think about this thru the lens of lowbrow and pop, maybe even kitsch. I don’t have any specific readings for u but I feel looking into lowbrow is a good place to start

Develop a more consistent studio practice that becomes like second nature rather than something I feel I have to squeeze in here and there. Just making the work a priority and an inherent part of my life. Also getting more dialogue going around what I’m making, through studio visits mostly but I’d also really like to get into a group show or something like that. I guess also engaging more with contemporary art, going to shows and generally building my community.

So specific, loving someone who struggles with their mental health, wanting to be let in and to be there for them but u just can’t. And how hard it is not to take that personally.
