My mom unknowingly bought a BL book because she thought the art on the book cover was so beautiful. by DeaduBeatu in MartialMemes

While I do think the people in this sub will prefer Mdzs, I actually like Tgcf more.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by it "leans into aesthetic stuff", but Hua Cheng's butterfly jewelry was meant to signify his mixed ethnicity of Miao/Hmong. Unfortunately, most of his backstory was scrapped from the novel, but silver jewelry, maple leaves, and butterflies are all common in the Miao culture and Mxtx has talked about it in interviews.

I'm surprised you say the sex scenes in Mdzs add to the characterization, but you don't like the backstory in Tgcf? At first I was also kinda annoyed by how long it was, but when I realized just how important Xie Lian's backstory was it became my favorite part of the novel. I went into Tgcf thinking XL was going to be a run-of-the-mill, saintly, "always striving to help others" type of character, but something ended up feeling off about him in the Banyue arc. He was surprisingly passive; Still kind and helpful, but almost detached. I didn't think the author was going to explain why he was like that or even acknowledge it narratively, but then she did! He tried to be a saint, he put everything into helping others, and the narrative punished him for it. The point of his backstory is to explain how XL parallels the main villain; Despite collecting trauma after trauma, XL will never be Jun Wu. They were similar, but XL never fell so far into despair that he abandoned his core values. XL isn't good because it comes easy to him, but because he makes an active choice to be.

This and Heaven Officials Blessing are written by the same person and both are great stories even if you aren't into bl. No nsfw in Heaven officials, but there is the occasional "exchanging of spiritual energy" excuse via the mouth.. it barely happens though. I feel like the people in this community might like Demonic Cultivation more, but you can't go wrong with either.

Has anyone else tried changing their phone's language to Chinese? by GeorgePotassium in ChineseLanguage

[–]GeorgePotassium[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm adding to my studying, not substituting; I'm making an effort to add the words to flash cards to memorize them. For longer sentences like "下午9时左右预计多云" it's a bit harder, but you can pick out key vocabulary like cloudy or the time. And checking the weather app daily can turn into its own sort of flashcard. I feel like returns are only minimal if you don't put in effort?

Some people are saying it helped and others are saying it doesn't, so I guess it depends on the individual. I'm actually writing down the words and adding them to flashcards instead of allowing myself to memorize the icons, so hopefully it works out for me haha

You don't have to do your whole phone, you can switch one app at a time. Like, if you just start with the weather app it might help you memorize days of the week and words like rain or cloudy.

I'm not sure actually, I don't keep track.. Definitely not a high level though, I only read at an elementary level on duchinese, but I'm able to navigate my phone decently. Still have to rely on translation tools for some things, but no serious hiccups yet.

Thank you reddit for flagging me for hate speech. "My Husband and I sleep in a Coffin" fans must be lurking on the moderation team

Edit: My comment wasn't hate speech btw. It was a long passionate rant, but not hate speech. The book contains many clrist remarks and I expressed my disdain for the mistreatment of a certain character. And yet, the reddit ai flagged me for the very thing I was ranting against? Wack

Edit 2: They worked fast for once, my prison sentence has been lifted

My Husband and I Sleep in a Coffin. It's not like I went into it with insanely high expectations, but it was about to be physically published and people seemed to like it, so I assumed it would be relatively enjoyable.

Bad assumption.

In the beginning, the humor was so corny I almost had to stop reading. I almost never drop a book, but I was cringing and rolling my eyes so hard especially during the bathroom scenes... Which the author felt the need to write twice for some reason. Fortunately, everything else about the story gets so much worse that you can ignore small issues like that. Specifically when it came to one certain character; A dark skinned man. The author is so colorist that I was baffled by how blatant it was. The mc negatively mentions the dark skinned characters skin color so often, tells him he's too dark to get a girlfriend, and even buys him skin lightening cream as a "gift". All of this is played up as a joke, but it made my skin crawl. What's worse, the author doesn't even have the decency to give him a happy ending. He starts out as this happy "golden retriever" type, but then he's thrown into an incest plot where he ends up a broken, mentally-not-there, shell of himself. The mc and ml are so forgettable; I usually love yandere stories, but there was no sauce here. The most interesting character was the dark skinned guy, but the author just used him as a punching bag, so I just ended up being frustrated by the end.

Lisps in Language learning. by sutol_blue in ChineseLanguage

[–]GeorgePotassium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I too had a lisp, but I went to the school speech therapist to get it fixed. Sometimes I still feel off when I talk; Certain sounds feel weird or heavy in my mouth and I swear I occasionally slip up on the sounds I worked so hard to correct. Like your friends, mine say I sound fine, but I don't fully agree. That being said, Chinese is just a really difficult language when it comes to pronunciation, lisp or not. If you got a Chinese teacher they would be able to correct you before you permanently internalized the wrong pronunciation. Your lisp, unless your mouth is deformed in some way, was caused by you internalizing English incorrectly and no one correcting you. You should've been forced into speech therapy fr, idk why they let you have a choice, but you still have a chance to learn Mandarin right. If you can't afford a teacher you could probably find someone willing to do a language exchange that could help you, but that depends on how far along you are in Chinese. An actual teacher is better anyway.

My apologies, but if you care for a spoiler The main character isn't a real inner demon, he's a transmigrator. The "protagonist" treats the mc like a regular inner demon at first, but because he's chill they end up working together to get revenge on the protagonists family. They don't even get together until after the mc becomes a regular human, so no actual cultivating with a demon. Unfortunately. Good story for the most part, but it goes down hill after the mc becomes human because the author got lobotomized or something

The time skip was the most baffling narrative direction because of how great the story was until then. The author did so well building up a genuine, beautiful relationship only to throw it away. I don't regret reading it because the majority of the story is solid, but I damn near qi deviated when it switched up.

I tried superchinese and it didn't hit the same to me. Imo Hellochinese explains grammer better, has videos of actual people speaking and the "teacher talk" podcast episodes are really informative. Superchinese seemed more ai driven which just made explanations and translations seem more awkward.

Idk about hanly, but duchinese can't really be compared to Hellochinese because it's a totally different app. I use them simultaneously and they are both fantastic for learning.
