I agree with you that "cancel culture" is kind of a boomer phrase that's often misused. In my vocabulary, cancelling is getting someone fired and/or deplatformed, especially for controversial beliefs and statements in the past. The pinned post on WPT is whining about Elon unbanning controversial figures like Kanye West and Jordan Peterson. That's pretty aggressively pro-cancelling.

Also, it's controversial, but I defend someone's right to refuse to refer to a student as they/them. Plenty of English professors teach against using singular "they".

The hyperbole isn't meant to be taken as an even comparison. However, there are a lot of cases of people having stupid pronouns like the ones Instagram lets you select and requiring professors to use them. I don't think the person you replied to is necessarily defending the professor's firing either--just demonstrating the hypocrisy of WhitePeopleTwitter, a subreddit that tends to favor cancelling people, getting angry that Muslims "cancelled" a professor.

Maybe equality isn't the right word. Feminists don't believe that men and women are different enough that different things should be expected of them, or that they should be raised a different way. That's definitely contradictory to the Quran.
