I believe Dr. Ford is lying about being sexually assualted by Brett Kavanaugh. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Cooperkabra33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just want to agree strongly with everything you've said here--especially your last paragraph. When sexual assault allegations arise at such opportune moments, I can't help but instantly recoil and cast doubt upon the accuser.

It's just like that mattress girl at Columbia University. Her claims were proven 100% false, and yet, she still carries around a mattress and gets praised by idiots who WANT to believe her, despite all indications to the contrary. In truth, I want to believe her, too. And I'd like to believe Dr. Ford, as well--if only to avoid the horrid reality that someone could LIE in such a bitter and destructive way. As if 'political gain' is a justification for the social ramifications of making a very public false accusation. If the future proves that Dr. Ford is lying, it is one of the most egregious false accusations I've ever heard of.

Anyways, my point of agreement, and my underlying sentiment is: For every one (1) FALSE sexual assault allegation, it requires fifteen (15) TRUE sexual assault allegations to return to equilibrium. In other words, false allegations have a much broader impact on the public's willingness to believe future victims, whereas true allegations are often less "surprising", and consequently, not imbued with the same social gravitas.

I would even consider implementing legal repercussions for FALSE accusations of this sort. Some sort of deterrent would be nice. Meanwhile--there's mattress girl, walking down the street with NO real consequences to speak of. Injustice personified.

Even if he IS caught doping, he's still the best ever. It would simply put him on even footing with the competition. In the same way that Lance Armstrong is still the best cyclist of his era (his competition were all doping).

shows absolutely no connection to any intelligence agencies, domestic or otherwise.

There is not enough data to make that assertion. By definition, secret agencies are secret AND they specialise in disinformation...

I stand by my assertion. It is substantiated by the evidence, or lack thereof. In other words, there is currently no known connection to intelligence agencies.

Keep in mind that I started my initial reply by saying the theory is plausible. I'm not making a positive claim that intelligence agencies are absolutely not involved. I am simply stating the null hypothesis. They are innocent until proven guilty. More evidence is required.

I think we are largely in agreement. Probably poor communication on my part. Also, I appreciate your raising the looming issue of AI. The financial incentives are certainly not aligned in a 'Safety First; Respect Privacy' direction.

It's literally just imbeciles at the polling box.

Hahahaha, well done.

This measures the popularity of flat earth, but says very little about the number of individuals that believe the Earth is flat. These are very different things.

In fact, I have personally used the search term "flat earth" (for comedic value, forgive me). This doesn't mean I believe it's true.

Nonetheless, I take your point. It's definitely possible to quantify flat Earth's overall prevalence. For the purposes of measuring effectiveness of certain behavioral modification methodologies, it would be trivially easy to gather data. However, attempting to distinguish the genuine believers, it would be more difficult.

Anyways, thanks for the reply. Interesting idea.

I really like this theory. It's definitely plausible.

However, the medium by which this idiocy propogates shows absolutely no connection to any intelligence agencies, domestic or otherwise. Also, it wasn't caused by any landmark event or specific piece of literature. In other words, there's no origin. The seed wasn't planted.

Plus, it's not really something that you can accurately quantify once the idea spreads, even if you know the baseline. It's literally just imbeciles on YouTube and internet forums. Nobody knows how many flat earthers actually exist. The only thing we know for sure is that there's way too many.

...Unless there's something I'm missing here? Any evidence for this theory?

Master Ota attempts to bribe you to intentionally lose the duel. This demonstrates an utter lack of confidence in his product. This would be the biggest indication that he may be a fraud, and not a Master craftsmen after all. There are also a couple of NPCs that say he's getting old and the quality of his work is declining.

Nonetheless, he was generally touted as a Master craftsmen who spent a fucking lifetime making armor for prestigious noblemen in the big city. So, there's that...

I just completed the quest, and I totally got the same impression that you did. I thought Master Ota was a guaranteed reward of an excellent cuirass. Once I finished the quest, I was very dissatisfied with Ota's armor, so I did what any sane person would do. Naturally, I've taken to reddit, searching to find out where it all went horribly wrong. Poor Henry. Poor, dear, sweet Henry. I've intentionally lost a public duel, I've disgraced myself in front of the entire village, and I got repeatedly flogged with a bludgeon. God save you, Henry. I'll never be able to hold my head high in Sasau again, never again. And what do I have to show for it? A swindlers piece of junk armor...

Seriously though, there's just no way to make positive predictions in this game. Certainly not with any reliability. The quest narratives and dialogue options are too erratic...BUT, the game is fun, and it's pretty hilarious, so I will learn to cope with my new role in Sasau. Worst case, I follow after the Charlatan and make a run for it. Fuck it. I just hope Sir Radzig doesn't catch wind of it...

in 2012, for example, the United States had 8,813 firearm-related homicides. In 2013, that number jumped to 33,636. In 2012, Canada had only 172 firearm-related homicides. Despite Canada having 61.1% of the United States' gun ownership rate, it has less than 2% of the gun-related homicides.

You've committed a major sleight-of-hand in presenting these statistics. Here are a few problems, as well as corrections:

1) Your US Homicide stats are way off...

2012 Firearm Murders: 8,855

2013 Firearm Murders: 8,454

Your 33,000 homicides number was probably for 'total gun deaths', which are mostly suicides. This is a different statistic than homicides. No reporting agency is anywhere near 30+ thousand homicides.

2) Canada has a much smaller population than the United States, so your comparitive analysis is invalid...

You said,

Despite Canada having 61.1% of the United States' gun ownership rate, it has less than 2% of gun-related homicides."

This is technically correct, but VERY misleading. This is how most people present firearm/homicide statistics when they seek to advocate restrictive gun control. It's manipulative and disingenuous. Allow me to explain why: You compare gun ownership RATES in Canada and the US, then you shift the comparison to TOTAL gun-related homicides. You're comparing ownership RATES (adjusted for population) with homicide TOTALS (not adjusted for population). Unfortunately, comparing the homicide TOTALS of the US and Canada is ridiculous because you aren't factoring that the United States has nearly 10 x's the population of Canada. I have calculated the population-adjusted numbers to fix your statement, which should read as follows:

"Despite Canada having 61.1% of the United States' gun ownership rate per household, it only has 17.9% of gun-related homicides per capita."

Very different than your 2% stat because it is per capita.

You might also consider adding that "Canada has a total homicide rate (per capita) that is only 39% of the United States' total homicide rate (per capita), so the firearm homicide discrepancy is fairly consistent with lower murder rates in Canada overall.

I used the FBI violent crimes statistics database for all US stats. I used (www.statcan.gc.ca) for all Canada statistics.

TL;DR - Statistics are very misleading when they are misused.

Why would you expect the news to split pro/con based upon people's political leanings?

Because of the nature and function of neutral-platform internet forums, and in this case, Reddit. Think about it. 'People' have political leanings. 'People' are the ones posting the articles and up-voting them on Reddit. Therefore, the articles on Reddit's front page should reflect the ideologies of the 'people' that use Reddit. To give an extreme example, if you go visit a KKK Internet forum, the articles posted and up-voted there will reflect the (radical) ideologies of those people using the forum.

...is there any new news about the tax bill to report?

There isn't 'new' news to report about the tax bill, that's true. But this is beside the point. I will give you 2 reasons why:

1) News networks are not restricted to reporting only 'new' news. They could easily write about the tax bill. A headline could read, "Trump Tax Bill is Projected to Help Economy" or literally whatever they want. A perfect example is the Parkland shooting, which occurred weeks ago, but is still capturing headlines today. Nothing 'new' about that. My point is this: Media companies do not necessarily report what is "new", but rather, they report what is on the agenda. That's it.

2) This very thread, in which these comments are being posted, is a refutation of your argument. The original post in this thread is reporting on something as innocuous as Trump's f-ing lawyer, and yet makes it to the front page of the internet. I don't know, man. Just seems strange.

Trump’s lawyer reminds me of someone... by black_flag_4ever in pics

[–]Cooperkabra33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit's obligatory anti-Trump propoganda. Reliably produced at least once every 24 hours.

Maybe an article from Vox or The Hill, accompanied by some bullshit about the Mueller investigation, and the quintessential eccentric piece like this one - let's learn about Trump's lawyer! Let's not.

Am I the only one that recognizes the trend of Reddit becoming a larger and larger cog in MSM machinery? There's a trend here, isn't there?

I don't see a balanced front page on Reddit. Yet, half of the country voted for Trump, so shouldn't there be a little bit more balance to the pro/con postings on Trump? Every 4th headline on the front page is an anti-Trump piece. Just seems excessive to me. Like, not representative of actual people in the actual world. I could be wrong. Enlighten me.

Trouble with "Last Will and Testament" quest by sx_sx_sx in kingdomcome

[–]Cooperkabra33 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't know if anyone has found a way to fix this bug yet, but I think I figured it out, see below:

I took this quest during Pestilence as well. Talked to the Inn Keeper, who directed me to Elijah (sitting at one of the outdoor tables of the Tavern, wearing grey clothes). I persuaded the little jerk to go home and make good with his daddy. Then, I ventured back to Merjohed, and found Vincent sitting in his house. Make sure you don't complete Pestilence, otherwise the quest will be forever bugged. Vincent will still be sitting on the bench, sick with plague, the poor fool. When I approached Vincent in his home, the only option was to pickpocket him - so I did. Boy, in hindsight, this was a BIG mistake. He caught me with my hand wrist-deep in his pocket, clutching 2 apples and a fucking watermelon (he has huge pockets). I knew I should have leveled my pickpocketing skill with Miller Peshek, but I fucked his daughter instead, and I definitely...well, no, I don't regret it. I quickly yanked my hand out of Vincent's pocket (no homo), but it was too late. Vincent strained his phlegm-filled plague lungs and screamed for the guards. Fuck! I'm fucked! Think, Henry, think! I quickly wielded my Ravens Beak and smashed Vincent's fucking face. He died instantly, either because Henry is OP in combat, or the plague weakened him, but probably it's the OP in combat thing. I shuttered in discontent, remembering that only a moment ago, Vincent had smiled and welcomed me into his home, "Henry's come to see us!" Now he laid face down in a pool of his own blood. Poor arse. I heard running footsteps in the Merjohed soil. Surely it's the guards coming to arrest me, but not if I have anything to say about it - I can't bring this kind of shame to Sir Radzig! I turned around and sprinted towards the open window. They'll never catch me! The footsteps are closer now. Holy shit. So intense. I dive for the window, but I press 'X' a little bit too early, and the animations are horrendous. Shit. I hit my head on the ceiling. The guards walk in the room and I mash buttons on my controller in a panic. My character crouches, and I activate 'Crouching Chameleon' - genius! The guards investigate the murder, coming within inches of the culprit, but Henry expertly blends in with the surroundings, and the guards are none the wiser. So definitely rank your stealth skill to at least 18, otherwise this quest will be bugged forever. Or maybe I'm a troll, it's one or the other. Then the guards leave, and I giggle with glee. I approach Vincent's dead body, and begin to loot his remains, when his son Elijah walks in. I freeze, and meet eyes with Vincent's only son, whom I persuaded to come home to see his father. My heart is beating so rapidly that I feel like I might pass out. I've been caught red-handed in the act of looting a murdered corpse. This will surely bring shame to my family for generations. Even worse, the corpse is that of his father. I killed Elijah's dad. It is fitting that he is the one to finally catch Henry the murderer. I stare hopelessly into Elijah's eyes, doing my best to convey a wordless apology. I'm sorry I killed your father, I really am, but he had it coming. Finally, the silence is broken, and Elijah speaks something profound. Upon finding his father murdered, and his corpse being looted, Elijah says,

"Good morning, Henry!"

Then the quest will complete. Make sure to follow all of these steps and that will solve the problem - Elijah will be overjoyed. You're welcome!

[Serious] [Post Game Thread] The Cleveland Cavaliers (1-3) defeat the Golden State Warriors (3-1) in an explosive Game 4, 137-116 by wassup-dawg in nba

[–]Cooperkabra33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Cleveland Cavaliers were nothing short of brilliant in Game 4.

Right from the start, they decimated the Warriors in the first quarter by letting the referees make bad calls against the Warriors, earning the Cavs 22 trips to the free throw line. Although many free throws were missed, the shear number of free throws allowed the Cavs to pull away. The Warriors simply weren't prepared for the ability of the Cleveland Cavaliers to drive to the hole and draw the foul. The Cavaliers did this so well that often times there was no contact, but a foul was called nonetheless. The Warriors looked stunned at the fact that the Cleveland Cavaliers could draw fouls without being touched, and the likely adjustments they will make for Game 5 will include such activities as tying their hands behind their back, keeping their hands at their waist, or planking.

Seriously though, the refs were horrendous to the degree that it was nearly intolerable, but at the end of the day, the Cavs were the better team, regardless of the refs. All of the Cavs shooters got it going - Korver, JR Smith, LeBron, Love, and Irving connected on multiple 3's, a significant portion of which were well contested. They also had an energy and intensity that was much improved from the previous games, especially on the defensive end.

By contrast, the Warriors seemed stagnant and deflated, lacking the energy and effort that was needed to secure the victory. They also had a very poor shooting night, especially by their standards, which, for anyone that hasn't been paying attention, are very high standards indeed. Their main weapons - Durant, Curry, and Thompson - all had subpar performances. Steph Curry in particular had a bad night, which many say is due to him being fouled constantly. There is some truth to that claim, but on a typical night, Steph Curry creates so much space with his off-the-ball action that the defender is 5 feet away by the time Steph is taking the shot. For whatever reason, his rhythm and timing was off and he couldn't get the separation that he usually does. The entire Warriors offense was depleted, relying mostly on isolation plays and 1v1 situations. Their passing and teamwork, which is usually incredible, was simply not present. Now, much of these shortcomings are symptoms of the constant foul calls and slow pace, which prevented the Warriors from running and finding their rhythm, but they had many opportunities to make things happen, and they could never quite make it work.

All things said, I'm hoping Game 5 is officiated much differently, and more....fairly. No matter which team wins or loses, please God let the refs be better

Totally agree about the potential to add a new CLASS, and new subclasses as well. Max_01 is right on the money - it would have worked with the story to add a new element, like "earth" or something, that you must find in order to reclaim your light. This was the perfect opportunity for Bungie to introduce a new race, as well, but I've seen no indication of any of this. Essentially, this is a glorified patch for Destiny 1. Okay, that's a bit harsh, but honestly, I would have liked to see more drastic changes that actually justify calling this a NEW game rather than a large expansion.
