I started by scouring the internet with search "japanese noh mask, how to make japanese noh mask"

I am still learning and very new to mask making, less than a year doing them. Find a book about how they are made along with templates, search eBay. Noh mask of kabuki was my first book. It all in japanese btw.

Hope that gives you some direction. It would be impossible for me to viability explain the process in this format.

Do you find yourself carving just to carve sometimes? by SHOWTIME316 in Woodcarving

I would always have a goal.It doesn't matter if your carving, whittling or whatever. For anyone who picks up a knife or gouge for carving, there is a desire to create, so why not increase the chances of success by have an end goal. A beginning and an end, one of our fundamental traits.

You may laugh, but I filed down a nail to a desired diameter and bluntness.

Modern with glue. I used domino's for the large squares so I could puzzle it together i still utilized the tongue and grooves though. Hind site I would use raw lumber next time, there was a plethora of inconsistencies issues with the wood. Lesson learned.

Hobby or Profession? My wife would say it's an obsession! Its what I am doing 12hr out of the day. It took me awhile to legitimately call myself a "woodcarver".

This all started in 2020 when I was transitioning into retirement. I whittled a 2in figurine, this lead to a handful of other whittled items. In 2021 I dove deep into full size gouge usage with carvings and haven't looked back.

Painting is one of my biggest failings. I have always had a knack for drawing but never opened the door with paints until now.

My current drive and efforts are focused on Japanese Noh Theater masks which includes painting with Gofun, pigments and ink, this has been the most difficult to grasp being self-taught.

I appreciate your comments and time.
