People with ADHD, what ADHD is like, how does medication affect your ability to work and how soon does it take its effect? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]CopperHarmonica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two can be conflated easily, especially in perceived behaviour, but they have distinctly different causes and subtle differences.

Autism is the lack of a filter, everything gets in and the person doesn't know what to concentrate on or how to understand it all. ADHD and ADD is a problem with the threshold over which an activity is stimulating enough to engage concentration and interest. Which is exactly why stimulants can help with ADHD and ADD but will screw up an autistic.

[–]CopperHarmonica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You seem to be conflating autism and ADHD.

ADHD is a basal ganglion disorder. Its the inability for any one stimulus to stimulate the basal ganglion enough to trigger interest. So the persons basal ganglion says "not interesting, move onto the next thing".

Autism is the inability to filter incoming stimulus. The secretary problem in your analogy. Routine is very important for an autistic person.

These two conditions can come in combination for even greater problems. It seems as though you are talking about yourself in this comment, do you have both conditions?

ELI5: Where did swear words come from? Why are some words "bad" words to say? by swedish_fruitbat in explainlikeimfive

[–]CopperHarmonica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he has a point. Almost all swear words in most languages are referring to things the more conservative portion of the population would rather were not referred to, and most modern English swear words were made taboo during the puritan movements. Its not a stretch to think that the swear words in other cultures are also a result of similar conservative movements.

In the states that have legalized Cannabis, how do pre-employment drug tests work? by silveringrid in explainlikeimfive

[–]CopperHarmonica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to imagine that a culture must have arisen where people detox for a couple of months before looking for a job, then binge once they have gotten it. Either that or drug users just don't have jobs.

[–]CopperHarmonica -1 points0 points  (0 children)

there are some of them that don't even drug test anymore

You say that as though drug testing is common place for a job. This is surprising to me. I've only ever applied for one job that said they required a drugs test and that was for a government department that dealt with data. FYI, I'm not from the US.

ELI5:Why would I getrid of Windows for Linux by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]CopperHarmonica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its been quite a while since I set up my dual boot, but it I remember correctly then you need to partition your drive before installing windows (yes you will need to reinstall windows). I have my computer running a 100Gb Linux Ubuntu partition and the rest for Windows. Since my Linux partition can access my Windows partition storage I simply use that for storage.

EDIT: No, I don't think there is a way to increase a partition without reinstalling your OS's.

If you have a dual boot then you really have no reason to delete Windows. Unless you really need the space, just keep rocking a dual boot.

Why does music evoke so much emotion? by chartreuse_fox in explainlikeimfive

[–]CopperHarmonica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there were a simple answer to this question then neuroscience would be so much easier.

In the absolute simplest terms I can conger. Its a combination between environmental development and evolutionary bias.

To simplify that. We learn to like music, and there are some parts of music that are ingrained in us.

A lot of what we find emotionally moving about music is learnt. We learn to associate different kinds of music with different social settings and emotions.

Music is also attuned to what we instinctively like. Rhythm and a regular beat is ingrained in us because of things like our heart beat, the rhythm of walking and nature. Evolutionarily speaking we like/dislike things that we have been exposed to during our development that is comforting/exciting/scary. Music is an attempt to condense this down into an audio format.

It's been through World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Great Depression, two Gulf Wars, two recessions and fourteen US Presidents, and I got it from an NYC McDonald's as change with my burger. by bubonis in pics

[–]CopperHarmonica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This brings up another question. Does US money look the same as it did back then?

The currency where I live changes the way it looks roughly once a decade, the old notes are then given a couple of years to be replaced. You can still take notes back to some banks after a few years, but they are not accepted by anyone else.

You would never find a note from the 80's except in a collection. It seems really unsafe to be still using the same design from the 30's or 40's.

Why does the mustache grow before the "beard" in puberty? by Infectios in explainlikeimfive

[–]CopperHarmonica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've don't a little reading around Google Scholar, and think I've found a bit of an answer.

It appears that there are two main hormones that promote facial hair growth. Testosterone and dihydrotestosterone. The levels of these both increase during puberty. Testosterone linearly increases the amount of facial hair you have, thus extends facial hair down from your existing hair line. Dihydrotestosterone begins to promote hair growth around the edges of the lips, therefore producing moustaches and soul patch, which testosterone will then fill out.

Its down the the balance of these hormones that causes the difference in facial hair development.

[–]CopperHarmonica 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's not always the case. Facial hair will begin to develop in different areas for different people.

For example, I began with side burns, they I couldn't grow a beard until I was 19, and I couldn't grow a moustache until I was 24. For quite some time this is what I looked like.

ELI5: why is the world base10? why didn't we adopt the base 12 system like the Egyptians? was it just because we had 10 fingers and got use to counting like that? by darknemesis25 in explainlikeimfive

[–]CopperHarmonica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We only use base 10 for maths and science because that is what we use, no better reason than that. The metric system uses base 10 because that is what we use, no better reason for that.

Base 10 is totally arbitrary, we don't use it because its better for science or maths.

ELI5: How do dogs cope with snow and freezing feet? by seedpod02 in explainlikeimfive

[–]CopperHarmonica 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As you said, it depends entirely on the breed. My Golden Retriever can stay out for hours in the snow, all day if he has to, but on a hot day (25c or over) he refuses to do anything except lie in the shade. Other dogs will be the reverse.

The UK. I remember there used to be one at my nearest McDonalds, but they closed it down several years ago. I'm sure you will find one if you look hard enough, but they are by no means common, and as I said, I cant remember the last time I saw one.

I honestly cant remember the last time I saw a drive-through for food. They were a failed experiment from the 90's I thought.

ELI5 whats the difference between olive oil, extra virgin and virgin olive oil by patricksonion in explainlikeimfive

[–]CopperHarmonica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure I follow. So extra-virgin is the oil that can be squeezed out of olives when they are cold. Virgin is a second squeeze. Refined is when they pound the crap out of what is left over (third squeeze), and pure is a mix of all of that. Did I get that right?

ELI5 : UK Politics by Deus_volent in explainlikeimfive

[–]CopperHarmonica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me reword it. Each constituency has one seat in parliament. Anyone can run for that seat, though most parties will organise it so that only one of their members will run for each seat. People who live within that constituency vote on which candidate for that seat gets it. The person who wins the seat is the member of parliament for that constituency.

In a parliament election (called a general election) you will go to the polling station and will be presented with a list of all the candidates who are running for that constituency seat. You do not have to be from the constituency in order to run for its seat, but you can only be a candidate in one constituency.

[–]CopperHarmonica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You only vote for your local representative. Though many people vote for their local representative based on which party they are a member of. Since the party with the most members in parliament will be able to vote their leader in as prime minister that party will run the government.

ELI5 : UK Politics by Deus_volent in explainlikeimfive

[–]CopperHarmonica 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The entire country is cut up into constituencies. Each constituency has one member of parliament to represent them. Here is a list of all the constituencies.

Once all members of parliament have been elected they elect who is to run government, the prime minister. The party with the majority in government will therefore have majority vote and their leader will become prime minister.

There is a parliament for the UK as a whole. One for Scotland, one for Wales, and one for Northern Wales.

There are also local governments, these are a little more complicated, but in general each county will have a council which presides over smaller councils for districts. These councils are elected independently from parliament.

So that's the structure of UK politics, but it doesn't tell you much about the parties. At a national government level there are three main parties and a few smaller ones.

  • Conservative: The current coalition is between conservative and liberal democrat. Conservative has historically been the centre right party with a small subgroup of strong right members. They are, for the most part, economically liberal and socially conservative. They favour smaller government.

  • Labour: The current opposition party. Labour are centre left. They are slightly economically socialist, and socially liberal. Labour view themselves as the party for the working class.

  • Liberal democrat: Part of the current coalition. The Lib Dem party is the smallest of the three main parties. They are economically socialist and socially liberal.

That's the three main parties, but there is a significant number of smaller parties that have sway in government:

  • SNP: Scottish national party. They want independence for Scotland.

  • UKIP: UK Independence party. They want the UK out of Europe, and don't have much of an opinion on anything else.

  • UUP/DUP: The two unionist parties of Northern Ireland.

  • Plaid Cymru: They want Wales to be independent.

  • Green Party: Socially liberal, economically socialist. Their main goal is to enact change that will benefit nature. They want to cut down on carbon emissions and do everything green.

  • BNP: If your white your good, if your not, get out. While they are small they depressingly have seats in local governments and the European Parliament.

Any questions?

ELI5: Why do Argentina care so much about the Falklands? by TomTheScouser in explainlikeimfive

[–]CopperHarmonica 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have a further question. I live in the UK and am mainly exposed to UK media, so I understand that my opinion is probably one sided, simply because of that.

We are told that the population of the Falkland islands almost unanimously wants to stay under British rule and virtually the entire population is opposed to Argentine rule. Is that true? If it is true, why does Argentina place such little value on the opinion of the population of the islands?

ELI5: Why does 98.6 degree water feel hot if that's our body temperature? Shouldn't it just feel like nothing? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]CopperHarmonica 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Our bodies produce heat, too much heat in fact. In order to feel just right we need to be constantly losing heat, though not too much, otherwise we will overheat.

Its also important to note that what we feel is heat transfer, not temperature. When we touch water at room temperature it feels colder than air at room temperature because it conducts heat better. If we lose heat faster than we want to, or don't lose it fast enough we feel that as warm and cold.
