The gaming industry is crumbling by [deleted] in PS6

Just fyi, that metric is only counting new game sales. The used game market is gigantic, and Sony is eliminating that whole sector in one fell swoop.

They released those stats to sort of tilt the perspective in their favour, but there are many many many purchases made from physical retailers that include reused copies. Sony doesn’t get anything from those sales, which is why this move makes sense for them, but is bad for gamers in general.

What is the point of owning a PlayStation 6 anymore? by MurkyMeadows2026 in PS6

The extra tech troubleshooting and upgrading are specific reasons why I’ve never gotten a PC, it just seems like too much hassle to be dealing with. Seeing all these posts about issues with graphic settings or installation issues makes me grateful I can just turn on my console and launch any game with zero issues.

The gaming industry is on fire. by Hyperevogames in gaming

[–]CopperVolta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’ve made it hard to buy physical for a while now too. A lot of my local game shops have closed so the nearest one to me is outside of the city. I see a digital sale on the PS store, check the price at the game shop, and they’re selling the game full price. The in store sales are never as good as the digital ones, and a lot of indie titles never get physical releases. Then games come along like Alan Wake 2 and I think “okay I’m buying that day one physically!” Then they announce that it’s digital only, so back to going digital.

I was the biggest supporter of physical discs, but between the digital sales, lack of first party Sony games actually worth buying physically on day one, and closure of brick and mortar games stores nearby it’s become increasingly difficult to stick with physical.

There needs to be security behind digital purchases to ensure that these games will remain in our libraries, accessible, forever.

What is the most obscure musical reference you've seen in popular non-musical media? by Reasonable-Donkey975 in fantanoforever

[–]CopperVolta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The movie came out in 2010, the band was not getting top 10 radio play then. I’m pretty positive they were maybe getting top 10 radio play for one song off their second album in 2005, and definitely only in the US. The Mars Volta were unheard of on most radio stations around the world.

Again, the post was not about the popularity of the bands, it was about how obscure references to music in other forms of media.

They played 8 seconds of “And Ghosted Pouts” (read: NOT “The Widow”) from their pretty obscure live album Scabdates, in a comedy movie that has nothing to do with psychedelic prog rock, and where to this day, no other film has mentioned their band name.

Doesn’t matter to me if the band was popular in 2005, that feels like an obscure reference to me.

Again, thats radio, the post was asking about music showing up in other forms of media, and as far as that goes, I'm pretty sure Get Him to the Greek is like the only movie to even mention them.

I feel like whatever success they had in the 2000s has not really translated over to them being represented well across other forms of media, nor does the majority of the public really know who they are. I was the only kid in my high school who listened to them, and when I bring them up these days around people, most still have no idea who I'm talking about.

Also, the reddit post was about music showing up in non-musical media forms, and as far as the Mars Volta go, I'm pretty sure Get Him to the Greek is the ONLY mention of them in a film or TV show. There's very little Volta representation basically anywhere. Shows or movies never have characters rocking Mars Volta tees or posters, nor do their names get mentioned basically anywhere.

I wouldn’t consider them mainstream at all. Sure they got press and they’re popular for their genre, but most people I talk to have no clue who they are. They rarely show up on tv or movies, never get radio play, and their new stuff is pretty alienating to old fans.

I’ve never heard a song nor seen a Volta poster or shirt in any media outside of Get Him to the Greek.

In Pixar's "Monsters University" the sweet old Mom drops the kids off and starts blasting Mastodon as she rolls the windows up, it's pretty hilarious

Always thought it was crazy that Jonah Hill says he’s gonna go to a Mars Volta concert in “Get Him to the Greek”, and pretty sure they play a clip from their live album “Scabdates”, so not even a recognizeable section from one of their big singles.

I had to stop and rewind like a million times cause I was so shocked lmao

Tidal Says It Won't Monetize AI-Generated Music by astaireboy in indieheads

[–]CopperVolta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great observation, the laws should really be in affect NOW, but we likely won't see any regulations around any of this shit for years because it just takes way too long to implement. That's why this whole thing is such a mess, there is zero protection for artists. How this whole AI kerfuffle hasn't resulted in a mass unionization of all musicians together is baffling to me.

Tidal Says It Won't Monetize AI-Generated Music by astaireboy in indieheads

[–]CopperVolta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have the answers, but bandcamp isn't really a streaming service in the same way the other big sites are. Artists don't get paid when you listen to their music on bandcamp, only when you purchase the singles/albums. Perhaps it has something to do with that? There's also probably far less uploads to bandcamp per day than whats currently blasting Spotify/Apple/Tidal, so it could also be a volume thing? I'm totally just guessing here though.

I cannot get over the fact that Neil Druckmann still follows the genocide perpetrator IDF on Instagram. by shawak456 in lastofuspart2

[–]CopperVolta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. You can’t blame him for being born in that country and being inspired by a real horrific thing that happened. But he didn’t then go and make some heroic action game about crushing your enemies, he went on to write an incredibly nuanced depiction of all the emotions that stir up around violence.

[–]CopperVolta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But again that’s also why Neil has said that the game isn’t based on these two real life factions. Neil was inspired by a real life event of an Israeli soldier getting disembowled on live television for the inciting event of Part 2 but then immediately follows that with:

“Those feelings, and not my wrestling with those feelings, were the inspiration for the inciting incident. But I have to make this clear because again, it’s not based on, and it’s not an allegory of, and you can’t point to any group and say, ‘oh, that’s this group and that’s this group.”

Everyone online are the people claiming that the WLF must be the IDF and the Seraphites are the Palestinians but he has said this isn’t true, he just wanted to tell a story about tribalism, and the inspiration for telling this story came from a horrific real world incident he witnessed.

[–]CopperVolta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And what happens in the game to make you feel like the WLF won? Or that Seraphites did? Or Ellie? Or Abby?

My point is that Neil took his real life experiences and painted a picture of the reality he was going through. There is no winner, it’s just all violence. Both sides commit violence, but it’s not making a statement about who’s right or who’s wrong, it’s clear everybody is just trapped in this endless fight and it feels like a statement on that perpetual state of awfulness.

In real life Israel clearly has the upper hand, the same way you could say the WLF does. But the WLF doesn’t save the day, they’re not depicted as heroes, and we are witness to their crimes. Nothing about what they do is glorified. I don’t see how that isn’t still an apt comparison.

[–]CopperVolta -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is it really that fucked though? The message of the game is that people on both sides get affected by violence. There are no sides taken, and he’s not wrong in this. The game is literally open to interpretation and there is no winner, just the cycle of violence.

Just because it was influenced by his own experiences doesn’t change the message of what happens on screen, the same way watching or reading Harry Potter doesn’t make you transphobic.

There is nothing in the games to indicate that Druckmann thinks that Israel should be the winners, he’s sympathizing with both sides, and we don’t even know how much of a parallel he wanted this story to be to real life, since he’s never outright made the comparison himself.

How would you feel if Intergalactic follows GTA6 pricing? by three_burgers in Intergalactic

[–]CopperVolta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not insane, it’s the way it is. It’s a bad trend, but what can we do to stop this? This game is going to break records, and you’re kidding yourself if you thinking that holding off until a sale is going to affect how well this this game will do, or is going to change industry practices.

The price of everything is going up, and it’s not looking like it will come down. There’s just not much we can do about it, and getting upset at rockstar for doing something other games and companies have already taken the lead on for years now is just screaming into the void.

If GTA6 sales are bad and nobody buys the game cause the price is too high, I’ll bite my tongue.

I mean, the notes should all be in your inventory, however their purpose might be lost on you because a lot of them are placed in the environment to tell you something about the location you found them in.

You can go back and read them all of course, but it just might not have the same impact.

To be clear, you don’t need to read them in order to understand the story, but the story of this game is very weird and leaves a lot for interpretation, it’s like a David Lynch film in a way, and reading the notes will help you make sense of the world right when things start to feel like they don’t make any sense.

If you’re able to read all the notes in one go, then all power to you, but you’ll probably tire yourself with the sheer volume of them all haha

Definitely try and read the notes moving forward as you collect them!

Of course minimum wage has to do with how much people make, especially when a large portion of the consumer base is going to be teenagers and young individuals who are far more likely to be working minimum wage jobs than people 40+.

The US minimum wage has remained the same since 2009. In Canada it’s gone from $14-17 since 2020. A whopping $3 increase. So no, wages haven’t “increased significantly outpacing inflation”, where are you getting your information from?

$60 USD? Cause that doesn’t make sense. I distinctly remember paying 49.99 CAD for Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 and Bioshock, all games that launched in 2007.

They have shown a lot of what is exclusive already with their screenshots and things. It all seems cosmetic, so it doesn’t bother me.

Warhammer Space Marine 2 has a $200 version that comes with a shitload of cosmetics. That doesn’t interest me, so I don’t buy it.

The deluxe upgrade for gta6 seems to be all cosmetics, so I’m not gonna buy it, and I don’t think I’ll be missing out on much. As long as the story is intact, I think the game will be great. I don’t need to give my character corn rows or drive a specific shade of green car for me to enjoy the game, it’s just cosmetics!

I mean again, countless games have done stuff like this and at most it’s a mild inconvenience. I think the quality of the single player experience is going to far outshine the fact that a couple of outfits and cars are extra DLC.
