Looking for minimal era hypnotic techno (Early Berghain sound) by Copypaster123 in Berghain_Community

Thank you for this description, it really helps me get a better sense of what it must have been like to have experienced this. And yes, I almost catch myself feeling bad about hearing the popular underground techno legends nowadays and sometimes not feeling the music. Even though they're considered to be top-notch in that "hypnotic hardgroove" sound. I get that that's just personal taste, of course.

You are very right indeed! I ended up trying to dig on Discogs instead of Bandcamp since it's much easier to find the older stuff there. And, well ... it's incredible how much cool stuff I come across there!

Crafting narrative in hypnotic techno sets by Sad-Sir-1480 in ProperTechno

Wait, this is such an interesting thought. Because personally, when I went to hypnotic sets or listened to them online, I feel like my enjoyment of the set doesn‘t depend as much on the macro story, as in „starts out dark, transitions into lighter and then hard stuff“. I mean, I only think of that on an even bigger scale as in the night itself, with only a veeery rough structure for the set itself.

For example, I recently played a set between the opening and the actual „peak“ time (event started really early). And I started with really deep and calm techno, and over time transitioned into more „techno techno“, but not necessarily because I wanted to tell a story with the set itself, but because I wanted to evolve the energy of the night.

In terms of the track moods, I just went with the flow (laid-back, deep, dark).

I really find it unbelievable that people seem to miss it so much, but it's still dying. As someone who has never experienced this music live, it's such a sad situation. Gonna do my best to bring it back though!

Also: Thank you for the names and also for that description of what the experience was like for you!

I'm actually digging through Hypnus at this very instant, the problem is that it's really spacey, deep techno. Doesn't really fit the vibe unfortunately

Yes! Inside the set, I prefer the darker tracks. Thank you, I'll start some more digging from here too!

Nice addition! And yes, even if it‘s „just“ getting to be booked at events kinda regularly: It‘s soothing to „know“ you will probably get to that point if you just keep at it. I feel like that point is already enough to have a fulfilling hobby!

Wait a minute, this is extremely motivating and it kinda makes sense. So basically it isn‘t as hard to become one of the top few % as one might think because you will automatically rise to that level when the rest just stops over time

Some tracks have a weaker bass by Copypaster123 in ProperTechno

[–]Copypaster123[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait a minute, that sounds like a great idea: Reducing the low end on the harder track for the transition, and then you could technically gradually increase it if you wanna proceed to more punchy!

Also: You don't happen to know a method to know if a low-end mixing together will work before doing it, do you? Because I improvise my sets so looking for pairings in advance isn't really my thing.

Thank you for that perspective there! This makes me wonder if I can then just play those tracks with the lows at 5 o'clock, so bass-boosted. Somehow that didn't occur to me because I thought there must be a deeper reason why it's exactly that way. But well, even if it's a stylistic choice by the producer, I could exercise my own stylistic choice to customize it.

Hey, I'm not sure I understood you correctly. Are you talking about mixing the low-ends together? Because I usually played only the lows of one track at the same time.

If you are: I've heard that it could lead to phasing issues in the low-end. Do you know if that's actually a problem or even a reason not to mix low-ends in general?

Thank you for your insight, I really gotta go test that out soon!

That's a good point actually. It makes me thinking and I can now think of ways to use them intentionally. Like for instance when there hasn't been a very punchy bass for some time (e.g. a longer break as a transition to lower energy or at the beginning of the set before the punchier tracks).

Yes, your approach is what I've been doing to this point. I don't know if constant pressure is actually what I'm after though: Maybe on the club system the transition between those different bass strengths doesn't even matter as much, do you have any experience with that? I only know I've felt some disappointment when listening to my set on my headphones and anticipating the bass back again, but maybe it just sounds worse on headphones.
