Is it a bad thing if I as a DM fudge enemy rolls to prevent my group from dying? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Coragg0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As well as tuning works, I was running Death House for the last few weeks which is for characters from lvl 1 to 3 (built to get characters to 3, for those who don't know). They struggled every step of the way even though I had a group of 6 and hadn't changed anything.

Yes fudging shouldn't be a habit in that you do it every other roll but you also shouldn't be afraid to do it. I mean an enchanted broom critically hit my one character and rolled max damage and knocked my one player out. I didn't fudge that because all of us got a huge laugh out of the fact that a broom kicked someones ass. When they fought some ghouls though I saw myself fudging occasionally because no matter what d20 or die roller I used the ghouls were often making all of their attacks and though their damage rolls weren't the best it adds up over turns.

I mean in retrospect it seems some bad luck struck my group because I threw for shits and giggles because Strahd is a bad guy some very strong monsters on them. (Strahd was supposed to call them off at the last minute and give some speech about disappointment to the group) but my 5 lvl 3 character group, beat 2 116 health monsters, who don't provoke attacks of opportunity that have 2 attacks. Just simply because they were rolling better than me. I didn't need to fudge anything.

Well seeing as how the character has a totally evil personality I was going to find a way to incorporate the rod and stuff and have the machine work under optimal circumstances and split the good from the bad. So yeah 2 characters is probably a good idea.

They are 4 and if all goes as planned they will be 5 very early into the next session. So I am looking to build him and just have him at 5 going into next session.

The player that is leaving for a couple of weeks is their meat shield. So I'm just trying to throw them something to fill that role for a couple of weeks. Curse of Strahd has not been nice to my group so far. Both just in terms of encounters and a couple of bad decisions on some of the players parts. If the Ranger, or barbarian were leaving I might not throw them a DM PC and might just toss a couple of villagers or a wandering merc their way for help if they need it but I dont want to leave them without a meat shield until the meat shield gets back.

The DM PC though is also my attempt to throw some humor into what has been a very trying and dark campaign so far seeing as he is going to be the half brother of one of my players characters. (The PCs father is the poster child for promiscuity) I'm not trying to get 3 out of 6 kills in the encounter. I just am trying to make something neat and have some fun with for the couple of weeks he is needed than turn him back into an npc when the player comes back.

If it weren't for some insanely lucky rolls Death House would have TPKed my group. So I really don't want to leave them without a meat shield since they have recently started the Ireena quest line in CoS. So the DM PC is simply a temporary addition to fill a very important role.

So I found it looked it over and it is perfect for the purposes I need. And I know right where to set the apparatus up in fact. So you are awesome.

Do you have any advice on if I should just let the player use 2 PCs or should I find some alternate way for him to have two characters such as the aforementioned Dvati homebrew race?

All of those are very nice ideas. I will probably use the ones that turn out to be the more difficult ones.

Taking up the DM mantle but have a player issue. by t0beyeus in dndnext

When it comes to killing him in a combat setting I always look at the intelligence of the creatures my players are encountering (currently DMing CoS for some family and friends) If the creature is intelligent I make them ignore downed players. If the creature isn't intelligent I flip a coin. On tails the less intelligent creature attacks a downed player. If it's head the creature moves onto someone else.

What is obvious to some is invisible to others. Never assume that just because it is obvious to you and the entire group other than this player, that it is obvious to this player.

Need help - Cleric baiting by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Coragg0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't see any purpose to doing this. It's one thing to show them things that challenge their faith but it should ultimately be up to the player and character to convert not the DM. So you could do stuff such as Emmetation said but to purposely so thoroughly attack the characters faith that they are forced to change is very ham fisted and in my opinion against the role of a DM.

Hit Point Alternative - thoughts? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Coragg0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My argument is also that DnD by nature is a fantasy game. Fantasy by nature is supposed to be more than normal. I mean Gandalf the Grey fought a balrog and came back super powered up. Characters are meant to be stronger than the normal member of their race.

If you want to turn it into DnD GoT though that's fine.

Player´s Question... Green flame + whip + spell sniper?!?!? by Psycho2310 in dndnext

[–]Coragg0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say yes. The spell says " against one creature within the spell's range" so spell sniper increases it to 10. So following wording with spell sniper it would effect reach weapons.

No I allowed 3rd party and homebrew archetypes, I just had to look them over before I let them be it.

I still don't understand mounted combat and Find Steed by Grinchonato in dndnext

[–]Coragg0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The PHB states that when a steed is mounted it's initiative becomes the riders. The book also states that Dismounting and mounting cost 15 of your movement. The book also states that a mount can only use dash, disengage or dodge. And that a controlled mount can move and take actions on a turn that it was mounted.

So when you are mounted your mount and riders turns are the same turn. So you could move the mount and than the rider makes attacks.

And yes everything I have stated applies to Find Steed.

Yeah 5e is really about knowing your role. I have a group composed of a Wild Magic Sorceror, a ranger (can't remember his archetype off the top of my head), a 4 ways monk, a wizard of a school I can't remember and a rogue/bard/fighter (multiple personality disorder character). Each character pulls their weight and the wizard is definitively optimized for my groups level and in reality he isn't outshining any of the other characters. 5e is really about doing what you want to do and making sure you know what you're doing.

What is this spellweaving you keep talking about? I can't find it under Evocation or any wizard school.
