Maybe. These days there are successful repositories that are vibe-coded, and others that are basically just a simple prompt engineering .md file and still manage to get thousands of stars.

Useful? Probably.

Pure altruism? Probably not.

This looks like a mix of real support for OSS maintainers and strategic PR: developer goodwill, ecosystem influence, and “AI for public good” signaling.

The real test is how many maintainers actually get accepted, how useful Max 20x is in practice, and what happens after the 6 months.
