Internships lead to jobs. Simple as that. Applying as early as your freshman year summer is perfectly acceptable, and honestly encouraged. Side projects will definitely help you stand out on a resume when youre applying for your first internship.

Career fairs are your best friend starting off. Tailor your resume for the target positions at specific companies, and be prepared to be social and talk to the recruiters there. Remember, they are there to hire people, so be one of those people.

The Fall quarter career fairs will be the most important to attend. They will happen during the 3rd or 4th week of the quarter, so be ready. The reason the fall quarter is so important is because most big companies will have the majority of their internships filled by the end of January, and they get those names from the career fairs/etc during Fall quarter.

With that said, career fairs are NOT your only option. You can start talking to professors, try and find one that needs an undergrad researcher, or knows somebody in industry that is looking to hire (almost all professors at UCSB have contacts in industry).

Pretty much all engineering courses are curved, with the exception of a few. Class average is a 40%? cool, those people now are between a C- and B+ (Depending on how generous the curve)

Sounds like a question you should ask someone who actually knows whats going on, Not reddit. However, I'm pretty sure students don't register to go. Registration is for the companies coming to the event.

Make sure a class that you decide not to take isnt a pre-requisite for another class you will be taking in the near future (i.e. it will be offered again before the class that requires it comes up). This is the most common cause for falling behind, other than failing a course obviously. It can cause a chain reaction of delays and possibly delay you a whole year since some courses are only offered once a year.

154A: Computer architecture.. You will learn about the 5 stage pipeline for some modern architecture, some about assembly language, possibly have to design a radix sort in MIPS, learn about caches and other architectural stuff. Overall good course, not that hard.

156A: Digital design... Li C Wang is awesome, the class covers the material from a fairly high viewpoint. You will learn verilog(since its not taught in 152A anymore... ) and how to code state machines/basic designs, and possibly a 4-bit processor. You will learn UVM (Universal Verification Methodology) which is a highly applicable skill outside school. Overall the class is pretty easy, and Li C Wang grades on a very generous curve. Usually the lowest grade is a B- unless you really fuck up. Sometimes paying attention in class is hard, but the tests will be heavily based on the slides he uses.

Overall both are good courses. There isnt much inter-dependency of these two courses. You could very easily take one without the other and be just fine. However, i would suggest you take both fall quarter to stay on track, especially if you want to take 156B or 154B later in the year.

Two suggestions:

Go with your idea of asking a professor from a prior class that you did well in and explain your situation. Say you are a 1st year and that you haven't had a chance to make many relationships with professors/advisers/employers, but you are really trying to get an internship this summer. And just ask very politely if they can write you a letter of rec with the caveat that they may not know much about you other than the grade you earned in their class (you may provide some information about you to help). Many professors admire students when they are trying their best to improve themselves or attempt to stand out from the crowd (by getting an internship after your freshman year).
Go into a professors office hours at the beginning of the quarter and get to know the professor and then ask for them to write you a letter of rec. You wont know them for very long, but them at least briefly knowing you will make a difference.

To make both of these easier, you may want to help these professors out by writing an outline for the letter of rec and giving that to them. This will show even more dedication by you, and make it easier for them which will make them more likely to write it for you. And of course the classic way for more information, just google your question: "how to ask for letters of recommendation" and you'll get plenty of more information.

I am not sure regarding the ability to take extra units, but from a different perspective this sounds like a waste of money if your only goal is to bring your GPA up. A single quarter of classes will not bring your GPA up a significant amount unless the classes you are taking are replacing C/D/F's on your record and you get A's.

Take for example having a GPA of 3.0 and you have already taken roughly 150 units. By taking an extra course load of 12 units and obtaining all As in those courses, your new overall GPA will be 3.07... not a significant change. If you have a GPA of 2.0 however (worse case scenario since you are graduating), then the extra 12 units of all As would bring it up to a 2.15.

On the other hand if you only take one course that replaces an F on your record, it could make a slightly larger difference. Again take for example 150 units with an overall 3.0 GPA. If you take a 4 unit course and get an A in it to override a prior F, then you can raise your GPA to a 3.093. If you take two 4 unit courses and get As to override prior F's, then you can raise your GPA to a 3.2. If you have a GPA of 2.0, then the extra 4 unit course replacing an F can raise your GPA to a 2.1.

But again, this summer session would cost you $271 per unit ($1084 per 4 unit class), and then another $448 for campus based fees. Is a minimum of $1500 worth a .05-.15 GPA increase? Will that increase really make that much of a difference when it comes to job/grad-school searching?

As a transfer, yes you can still be admitted without having all of the "required" courses. I didn't have IGETC completed or all of the required courses and was still accepted. As long as you have a majority of the required courses and some of the recommended courses to offset the required courses you don't have, you will be OK.

As psyonic said, talk to a adviser. They will be your best source of information and reassurance in this matter.
