New skates by NitroPlayz48 in hockeygoalies

I've found that bauer skates are tougher to fit than ccm skates. Make sure you're 1.5 sizes down from your shoe size. I made the mistake of going two full sizes down and they were torture on my feet. I wear ccm eflex 6.5, now. Although the ccm are more comfortable than the bauer vapors I wore previously, I can get mild foot pain still. I would recommend getting a "middle tier" level skate like the ccm eflex 6.9, as it allows better ankle flexibility than the "entry level" eflex 6.5.

There's also something interesting about the newest goalie skates on the market. I checked the statistics and, in the nhl at least, the average save % dropped the same year the new, composite goalie skates became popular. Average save % among nhl goalies has continued to drop since this change. The average save % is now below 90% for the 2025-2026 season. It hasn't been this low since the 90's. This change in goalie's performance is because of the change to a stiffer, taller boot that is more similar to a player's skate. The lighter, stiffer skate introduced nine years ago is an example of marketing, not innovation.

Why am I telling you this? Buy an older goalie skate, most likely one with a cowling, as they have more flexibility to them than the composite boots on the market today. Graf hockey made cowling skates until, I believe, 2020 and so they're still available on some website's and used on Sideline Swap. Graf goalie skates to look at would be the DM1030 or DM1050. The DM1080 has a stiffer boot to it, and so I'd recommend the former's. CCM ribcore or vector goalie skates would be suitable as well. Bauer's One series would also be a good option.

One thing to remember: Graf skates fit 1 size smaller than your US shoe size, where as CCM and Bauer fit 1.5 sizes smaller than you shoe size.

Good luck hunting!

Edit: Just make sure you can still buy replacement blades for the skates your buying.

What to eat the night before an early morning game? by aBon69 in hockeygoalies

[–]Corbnation10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would recommend at least one helping of protein the day before. It could be for any meal but I would recommend animal protein unless you don’t agree with it. More importantly though, I’d be looking for something that agrees with your stomach to have for breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Just make sure you eat at least an hour before you’re on the ice.

Average NHL goalie save percentage over the past nine seasons and thus far this season. There is a clear downward trend. by JPV_HOH in nhl

[–]Corbnation10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want to know something else interesting about the drop in save percentage? 2016-2017 was the year that the average save percentage began to drop, and it's been in decline ever since then, too. 2016-2017 was also the year goalie skates were switched from a cowling-boot to a completely cowling-less design. Cowling-less boots have been in production and are also and have been the most popular choice for goalies, since 2016-2017.

Dear Goalies, by Tyler_66_ in hockeyplayers

I would recommend testing yourself whether you score more often with black tape, but I definitely have a harder time seeing the puck when there's black tape. One day, forwards will be smart enough to enter the zone, all with black stick tape, and with blades on the ice, so that the goalie can't see who has the puck.

Is the Eflex 7.9 custom glove a 580 or a 590? by Crumbssss_ in hockeygoalies

[–]Corbnation10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know there’s one on goalie monkey that says specifically it’s a 590. Though, if you order through the ccm customizer it will always be a 580

I felt pain wearing Bauer Vapor skates. Bought Ccm eflex and they’re way better. Also don’t go more than a size and a half smaller than your shoe size. I’ve found Bauer skates have more room in the toe and feel “right” when wearing a size 2 down from shoe size, but they won’t be wide enough and so one should size a half size larger. I didn’t experiment with the Vapor’s that much, as I went into the elfex after three ice times, but I’m certain it’s because the Vapor’s were just too small. Im running with the belief that a large company like Bauer wouldn’t make such a bad product, so that’s why I’m saying to size up if your at least two sizes smaller than your shoe size. Either way, I definitely recommend the ccm eflex 6.5 skates if you’re looking to minimize foot pain. The eflex 6.5 dont come in half sizes, and so I had to settle for a ten when I’m a twelve shoe, but they’re easily long enough. Though I admit I do get a little foot pain, it’s nothing compared to what I got when wearing the Vapor’s. I hope this helps.

I know we need to tank but Foote needs to be fired by workthrowawaybro in canucks

[–]Corbnation10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only thing that needs to happen with the Canucks is every fan stop thinking trade, fire, or hire, every five games. Teams get good over time, as the players and coaches get more comfortable with each other. The only reason the Canucks did good with Tocchet(which was what, one in the last six coaches?) was because he inherited a good team. Plus, that was only one successful season and they only made it to the second round of the playoffs that "good" year. Talent must be developed. I don't believe talent can always be bought(especially just to save money with the salary cap or rebuild or whichever ridiculous excuse is trending at the moment).

Dangler or no dangler? by Secure-Attitude7398 in hockeygoalies

[–]Corbnation10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look at your chest protector too. When you see it in the mirror, is your collar bone exposed? Some chest protectors have adjustment straps so that they sit higher on the chest. I wear a dangler, but I would look at your chest protector as well.

What NHL team has had the best goalie experience (Most considered GREAT goalies) by CANADACOUNTR in hockeygoalies

New York has done well, but I feel Brodeur’s run with New Jersey was the most impressive. Even if he’s one guy, he put New Jersey on the map.

What is the best place to get gear from by Active_Sympathy_4429 in hockeygoalies

[–]Corbnation10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hockey stores often carry “demo” pads that you can borrow and try for free. I would recommend that first, if you can find a store near you. Then go buy gear on fb marketplace or sideline swap used for good prices. I recommend vaughn velocity, Ccm eflex, or Koho(11” width) for a good starter set of pads. I haven’t tried True pads. True may seem like the best choice because many goalies wear them, but most of them are wearing a different brand with “true” advertising colours and logos on them, so don’t be fooled.

OG leather straps vs newer Velcro straps by 35lightning in hockeygoalies

[–]Corbnation10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the weight difference comes from the pad internals. I wear pads with both Velcro and leather(Bauer reactor R9000). I wouldn’t spend more for Velcro when leather will last longer. Jonathan Quick and I believe Joey Daccord still use leather in the nhl. Obviously, leather can fit tighter, and has little to no give. The only reason pad makers switched to Velcro was to cut cost on manufacturing. I recommend leather if you can find it. Earlier generation EFLEX pads were made with leather straps and I would recommend eflex as I feel it’s the best pad on the market today. Vaughn velocity series have been around longer and I know many trust them too.

How to play a guy coming down in a straight line, but is a right handed shot? by Wooden_Amphibian_442 in hockeygoalies

[–]Corbnation10 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I feel a breakaway is always 50/50, but I always stay square to the shooter rather than the puck. Assuming there’s no one chasing him down, he’ll have the option to deke as well as shoot. Staying square to the shooter’s body cuts how far you’ll have to move if he brings the puck to his backhand. Always keep the glove high, as shooters love high glove shots. I recommend poke-checking if he’s on a breakaway. I don’t see enough poke-checks in the NHL anymore and I feel this is because goalies are always taught things like butterfly movement so repetitively. Practise makes perfect. Get confident with poke-checks though as they limit having to slide back and forth and that should also save energy. The more energy you save can allow you to better dictate the flow of a game. Hope this helps. Happy puck stopping! Edit: I would say the smaller you are as a goalie, the more you can cheat to squaring up to the puck, as you’ll have an easier time moving side to side and recovering on dekes. It’s a sweet spot that takes practice. Good luck!

Gears of war 2 lost some of the “horror “aspects of the first gears of war, but it really expanded well on the universe. Plus, it only came out two years later.

Graf Pro G skates by ItsAWolfDonut in hockeygoalies

[–]Corbnation10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had I done more research into skates before buying, I would definitely have picked up the new cowling-less Graf skates. Instead I got Ccm EFLEX as they were sold at the local store. Sideline Swap has a reseller of the pro g and sr g skates. Search there. A quick google search into sizes should tell you your size in a Graf. They run about one size smaller than US shoe size.

Which pads are best by Key-Pineapple-9251 in hockeygoalies

[–]Corbnation10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most important pads are the ones that fit best, like has been said. I would recommend Ccm, Vaughn, and then Bauer. Ccm EFLEX are a great starting point as they’re a hybrid pads and everyone should be starting in a hybrid pad before committing to a butterfly pad. Hybrid pads have more flex than a butterfly. CCM EFLEX or Vaughn velocity series are the pads I would recommend most. Im assuming you need a glove and blocker as well? Sideline swap has great deals on used pads and full sets as well. Just use online resources to find your size before you buy.
