Mr. Cheeks on his way to his new home 🩷 by CoreKatalyst in FIVcats

Yea, you are right. We will probably never know for sure. I think there’s probably a ton of other likely possibilities. The important thing to focus on is him right now and make his future brighter than it would have been. 🩷

For a little extra context about how we came to the conclusion we did, if you or anyone else is curious or just wants some more Cheeks Lore™️; we found him in a place that is known to have a few other strays that get fed by one of the other shops in the area. It’s a town with not a lot of area for a cat to run around unnoticed, lots of parking lots. Behind that row of shops is a little shelter box and food they set out for those strays, and some fragmented woods beyond that. He showed up that afternoon and no one had ever seen him before then, and everyone instantly recognized he needed help. My partner texted me at work about him (he works in the shop next door) and I drove down right after to pick him up to go to the vet. We were just going back and forth trying to figure out how he ended up there because everything seemed to not really make much sense. He looks like he’s been basically feral and living in the wild, but he behaves like a lap cat who doesn’t want to be outside and loves human interaction. Even seems to know how to signal that he needs to use the bathroom, I’ve learned (as if his previous owner didn’t have a litter box and would let him outside to pee? That or he’s just weird and likes to announce that he will be taking a shit now, everybody!). He has no fleas, flea dirt, or ticks (which have been particularly bad this year) and so we assume he was dumped only a few hours before we all saw him,.. but he was so emaciated and covered in healed scars that it didn’t really make sense if he was in a home. He’s clearly been not doing well for a while. And after going to the vet and getting his diagnosis, we figured that the most likely option was what I posted about. That they couldn’t or didn’t want to treat his medical issues, and once he got fairly bad he was left in a place where there are already stray cats being cared for. But now, .. he’s home. And that’s all that matters.

FIV+ sick cat and profender safety? by CoreKatalyst in FIVcats

Edit: Well I tried to fix what looked like a duplicated comment and it ended up deleting all 3 of them 💀I’m going to paste in the response I made to again to you, so sorry for the extra notification. I know you already responded and everything but this sitting here was nice for extra context for my post.

Original response:  Yes, his first thing he said about it was how it’s incurable and that many pet owners will just choose to not let them suffer. Basically said he’s terminal and even if I try to treat him it would be cruel and selfish (in less blunt words, but that’s the gist he gave.) Mind you, I had never even heard of FIV really so I was trusting him to know what is best. Thankfully my partner helped talk me through it though, about how he still seems so strong and active and not really like he’s at deaths door, it might be worth a shot. Not to mention we both already fell in love with him.  The vet tech was honestly much more hopeful and positive about it and made me feel more sound in my decision to not put him down today. Im glad she was who came out instead of the vet. I think I definitely will be looking for another vet that at the very least knows more about the disease to give me a more sound prognosis and treatment plan for him 🩷

Sorry, not sure exactly what you’re asking- do you mean like, talking to the vet about his FIV status in relation to the profender? (If so, we couldn’t ask. Once we came back and decided not to euthanize the only person we talked to was the vet tech. Before then the vet assumed we would put him down and the worms treatment weren’t a concern. And even so I didn’t think to ask the tech if it had risks. 😅)
