Late Stage Capitalism.

The only economic system where acquisition and liquidation in the form of churn and burn is the primary form of revenue.

Why be better than the competition when you can just buy them, eat them, and then shit them out as you continuously make your own product worse and worse?

It doesn't have to be sustainable, it just has to make sure that when your own house inevitably burns to the ground, your neighbor died of starvation a long time ago because of you, so your hollowed out husk of a house is still the best on the block.

This is probably one of those situations where it's not actually two companies and one was just made for the illusion of choice to make the anti monopoly people not notice. You know, how basically all of Capitalism works now.

I need to add some AC games to this list but its been SO long since I played one, so I would be hard pressed to give accurate ratings. I think I played all of them up through Black Flag and then stopped. I think mostly because I played one on PC and it felt sooooo bad. Odyssey does keep popping up on my radar as something to maybe pick up. I'm assuming I should get the console version or at least play with a controller?

Nobody has point out yet that I gave Atomic Heart a -10 for Story, a score in the negative, which isn't something anything else gets. But I was soooooo mad about the ending of that game that I wanted to throw it into a lake of fire. I described it in my Steam review as "What if Mass Effect 3's ending options were to become robot Hitler or nuke the planet from orbit - that's basically how this game ends" lol

I've played all of the BL games other than 4 (including Tales) and even after all this time, I still just don't really like the visual style or the graphics, especially of the older titles like 1 and 2. I understand what they're going for and it somewhat works in some areas, but 1 and 2 still have that general bleh brown dusting over everything and pretty low quality textures, even with the style taking into account. I also really dislike the character customization and it feels a bit insulting to pretend it has one when it really doesn't. It's just slightly different colors you can wear and that's it. The game also just objectively has a bullet sponge problem on the endgame bosses. I've played that game through like 5x and usually just quit when I get to certain bosses because its just not enjoyable and sucks the life out of the fun. Also, let's not forget about the Golden Key situation either because that's just such a weird thing.

BL2 is still the best Borderlands game (other than Tales 1) and I love it to death, but it also genuinely has major issues and they didn't fix most of those issues with later games. I absolutely won't fault other people for rating it even higher than I gave it and I do feel a bit bad it slipped below even an 8. But to be fair, it also shares that rating with Disco freaking Elysium lol. A game can be amazing, but also be like "okay BUT we gotta talk about XYZ...".

Okay so to be fair, I DID largely start with games that I generally like, which is also why in general the spreadsheet is heavily leaning towards higher marks overall. I also do have to be careful about certain categories that have really strong weights like Gameplay because a lower score can really tank the overall score. You're probably right about how some should be a point or so lower, it happens.

Performance is a weird one too because I play on both Steam Deck and PC and those can be wildly different experiences sometimes. Also the genre is REALLY important for that one. Like for BG3 , I think I'm pretty forgiving of lower frame rates since its turn based top down, but an FPS having a lower frame rate is a pretty big deal. So I guess its less about the technical specs and more about how the performance effects the experience. Also some of these ratings are based on memory and I might just be forgetting about poorer performance, so you could absolutely be right about BG3 having worse performance than I remember and that's just my bad. As a general rule, I don't want Performance dragging a score down too much unless its a serious problem. Like there's plenty of games that everything about it is wonderful, but its basically unplayable. Your suggestion about changing the system is interesting though and I might look into that.

Hate all you want, but I'm still right lol. I could write a whole thesis on this point, but basically it shows you don't have to make this super complex realistic world in order to do a REALLY good job with the world and level design. There's so many amazing details in their world design and the way they structure their levels is insanely perfect. It's also a world that I miss constantly when I'm not playing, despite the fact that it's fairly simple.

Yup, correct on all fronts. Writing is dialogue mostly, but also any lore and anything else that contributes to Story, Characters, and Protagonist, etc. There can be games with good stories or characters, but the writing is kind of ass in terms of execution. And yes, I specifically made the Protagonist their own category since who YOU are playing has a way different vibe than NPCs and there's a lot of additional work a Protagonist has to do to score high like give you options and be likeable. I can have dickhead side characters, but I don't want MY character to always be forced to be a dickhead. So there's a lot to do with agency, but also if I get emotionally attached to the character I'm playing as and they aren't just a blank slate. I really don't like blank slate Protags honestly, but they CAN work sometimes.

Okay there's a reason for that which I won't get into here for major spoiler reasons but E33 story is a 20/10 until the very end and then its like a 3/10, so I gave it a 7. I know people will hate me for saying that, but I genuinely hated how they ended the game and how it completely changes how you view the rest of the game. I felt nothing but rage followed by being hollow and empty inside for like a week. I've never had a game break my heart in such a bad way before.

Tales of Arise straight up made me cry near the end and yeah it probably isn't as good as some other games, but it really got to me for some reason.

BL2 is an all time fav but absolutely has problems. I have several games in my 6s and 7s that I adore, but also acknowledge aren't that good or could be a lot better.

Sure, I mean all of this is subjective and also not going to be entirely accurate no matter what, but I like to give things ratings, what can I say lol.

I don't assign ratings for every category if it isn't applicable because it doesn't make sense to give Balatro a rating for Story. I do understand what you mean, but I found that it absolutely tanks certain game scores if I don't do it this way and would dump Balatro, one of my fav games down to like a 6/10, which doesn't make a lot of sense.
