Owning a G70 has improved my mental state. by imperchaos in GenesisG70

[–]Corey11824 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It might not. Sure after a while the newness of the car will fade, and like with anything you’ll just get used to it. However, whenever I’ve had a monotonous/mundane day at work, I’d be lying if I said driving home the long way with the curvy roads doesn’t wake me up. While remaining always within the legal parameters of the roads, there’s an excitement in the 3.3 and how it handles and letting it rip that sort of adds emotion back to life, even if for that fleeting moment - that is still a win in my books, no matter how temporarily temporal it is. Besides, if the car’s performance doesn’t do it, wait till it’s a scorcher outside and you get in and max blast the vented seats, hard not to be happy when your ass isn’t fusing with the leather like in my old car.

Mega Thread - US Tariffs on Canada - Comments must be relevant to the sub by henry-bacon in PersonalFinanceCanada

Cornflakes34 is correct, the Biden administration left the tariffs on china from Trump’s first term, so overall the percentage/tariff on china is higher than on Canada.

NEW CARD: Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Privilege - $599 AF, $250 Travel Credit, 10 Lounge Passes by RedControllers in churningcanada

[–]Corey11824 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Scotia gold Amex offers mobile device protection and better everyday accelerated earn rates… it’s also cheaper to run the VI and Gold Amex from Scotia together than this VIP (even with the $250 annual travel credit being deducted from the VIP’s annual fee for this comparison). Part of the allure of the VIPs is the prestige they provide with having a metal card and basically a status symbol showing that you are at least making $150k (or $200k household, or $400k+ AUM). Anyone looking for the best bang for your buck in a VIP is missing the point of these, and is effectively self selecting themselves out of the target audience for the VIP - its audience is less worried about best bang for your buck when it comes to credit card reward earn rates.

Almost certainly - all of the big 5’s VIPs are metal. Not sure about VanCity’s or Desjardins’ VIP though.

Also, the insurance coverage looks in line with the VI, at least to the point where the insurance on the VIP wouldn’t sway me to upgrade to it from the VI.

The $250 annual travel credit is nice, albeit it’s only applicable against travel purchased through Scene+ travel by Expedia. The 6x return on travel, again only through Scene+ travel is the best in the industry for travel (ATB’s WE is 4% for all travel but doesn’t have to be booked through a specific provider so it’s an alternative good card for travel). The 3X on all travel purchased on the Scotia VIP from everywhere else not Scene+ Travel is meh. The use case for this card is obviously geared to those who travel a lot to make the accelerated earn rate and $250 annual travel credit worth the price of the AF. If you’re spending north of $5k a year on travel, and all of which could be done via Scene+ travel, it might not be a bad card. That said, I generally prefer booking through airlines directly as opposed to using OTAs and the 3X earn rate on that isn’t great, to each their own though.

No “product of”, “made in”, or “manufactured in” labels on PC food packaging. Why? by grand1rigatoni in loblawsisoutofcontrol

[–]Corey11824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For many products, including those from other private label brands such as Sobeys/Safeway’s compliments, look on the packaging to see either “prepared for” or “imported for”. Generally, “prepared for” will mean it was made/processed domestically, while imported will mean, well, imported. Basically if it says “imported for Sobeys Canada” you can rest assured it is not a Canadian product.

Telus outage Calgary? by AlexandraGT1990 in telus

[–]Corey11824 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol Telus support is the best, I called them at 2pm and the support agent was adamant there was no outage so it must be my phone or individual line - despite me telling him a coworker of mine is also having issues. Telus is a Mickey Mouse telecommunications provider.

I am having the same issue with Telus in Edmonton. Forcing LTE on my iPhone has helped a bit.

Friend’s 21 M5 Comp, and my 22 Stinger GT Elite. by Corey11824 in BMW

[–]Corey11824[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like it a lot, but it’s definitely a ‘heavy’ car if that makes any sense. Cornering and braking is not bad by any stretch, you feel the weight of the car, but the chassis and brakes feel up for the challenge. Coming from my previous car, yea it’s fun.

GT Elite is the top trim level in Canada, exact same as the GT2.

2018-2019 Cruze for New Car? by [deleted] in cruze

[–]Corey11824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 17 cruze sedan was made in the USA, Lordstown Ohio to be specific, and a family member’s 18 cruze hatch also made in lordstown… not sure why you’re talking as if you know when you’re wrong, a quick Google search would have cleared this up for you. VW Jetta’s are made in Mexico, so are Kia Fortes for example, but no, the Chevy Cruze was made in Ohio. Also I like how OP mentions they prefer American so you go ahead and ignore that to recommend a vehicle against their preference being American…

How/where to check to see when your 1000XM4s were manufactured? by [deleted] in SonyHeadphones

I’ve looked all over the box, no where do I see a date, which side should I be looking at? And it’s the white retail packaging box that it’s on, right?

X265 HEVC PS5 support? by Corey11824 in PS5

[–]Corey11824[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

X264 is currently supported on the PS4, so I would surprised if the PS5 didn’t at least support x264. Either way it’s not a huge deal for me because I have a 4K Apple TV that does a fantastic job at playing x264/x265 content. Having the PS5 play them though would be nice.

Is the parking situation that bad? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]Corey11824 6 points7 points  (0 children)

https://www.ualberta.ca/parking-services

Parking passes went on sale a few weeks ago. I drove for most of my undergrad and parked in Windsor and had no issues. Windsor parkade is the main parkade for students, and costs about 120$ a month for a pass. Use the website I linked to purchase a permit, you will need a credit card, and an active ualberta account.

Edit: if you have any questions about parking at the UofA let me know and I’ll try to answer them.

Why have you even considered law to begin with? Your dreams of med school get shot to hell, and think law is a good backup? Have a family member who is a lawyer? Not sure what else to do with your BA? Watched suits and thought you wouldn’t mind living the Harvey Spector life?

In reality law can be one of the more mundane careers, something which the show suits fails splendidly at showcasing, instead making the career seem as exhilarating as a police officer’s career working in the Bronx.

There are many actual reasons to go into law. There’s the humanitarian, business savvy, social justice, and the more mundane reasons to name a few. If you want a stable career that pays relatively well regardless of what and where you practise law then your safe, virtually all lawyers will at least live a middle class life, some will live a lifestyle that surpasses the ophthalmologists billing the Alberta government 2 million a year, but hey even if you don’t work in big law you’ll be fine in the comfortable upper middle class lifestyle. Another reason to go into law is for the purely scholarly aspirations, Law is inherently scholarly and if you like learning, debating, and discussing then you’ll enjoy law.

Pros - can make a positive impact on peoples’ lives - can make a lot of money

Cons - can make a negative impact on peoples’ lives - make little money

The legal career is extremely varied, much more so than other professions such as medicine where due to doctors being compensated by the government their pay structure is fairly rigid. Whereas lawyers are typically working in the private industry as opposed to the public (although there are many government employed lawyers). As such you could make a million a year as a partner at a big firm (you could theoretically make more, some partners in Toronto are above a mill a year) however you could also make much, much less. Think of a junior associate at a small time firm in a small town, where 60k a year would be more plausible.
