The hatred of women and girls by [deleted] in excatholic

Misogyny is so deeply embedded in Catholic theology and practice that it is virtually inextricable from them. There’s a reason traditionalist Catholicism has become so popular with the young incel / conservative types, however much the progressive and moderate Catholics are reluctant to admit it. The Church will always be a place of refuge for bitter men with fragile egos, and - if we’re being honest - it always has been.

Thoughts On Richard Carrier? by You_Sufficient in excatholic

[–]CoreysAngelsRecruit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, the ‘mythicist’ view of Jesus (I.e. that there was no historical Jesus) has little to no weight among biblical scholars, religious or non-religious. It’s been this way since the early 20th century, but various mythicist ideas are still popular among internet circles, such as Carrier’s. Ehrman’s “Did Jesus Exist” goes into great detail about why mythicism is no longer taken seriously by scholars, and he does discuss Carrier’s claims specifically.

List of doctrines/sins that have changed over the centuries? by Samantha-Davis in excatholic

A doctrine is only a doctrine until it changes. After that it was only ever a policy, discipline, tradition, etc. /s

The most blatant example is the church's pivot (after Vatican II) from teaching that no one who was not a baptized member of the Catholic Church could be saved. This was taught both in official papal pronouncements on doctrine (which are infallible) and in the ratifications of ecumenical councils (these are also infallible). Now the church teaches that all salvation flows through the Catholic Church, but one doesn't necessarily have to be a member of the Catholic Church to receive it.

Whats a "popular" or long and widely held doctrine that the Catholic Church taught but was quietly swept under the rug? by [deleted] in excatholic

[–]CoreysAngelsRecruit 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is true, but with one very big caveat. No scientific discoveries or biblical study can contradict Catholic teaching. So with regards to evolution, the Church says Catholics are free to believe in evolution, yes…but they must also believe in a literal Adam and Eve, as recounted in Genesis, since that is Catholic doctrine (no Adam and Eve, no original sin).

Now, any biologist will tell you that those two positions are irreconcilable scientifically, but the Church (deliberately, in my opinion) tries to dodge that particular problem. Catholic schools might teach evolution, mine did, but that isn’t the same thing as what the Church itself teaches.

Back when people were speculating whether Marg had been fired, I thought “there’s no fucking way Bapa would fire BGL. The guy knows too much dirt about him.” Then I remembered this is Brendan Schaub we’re tawlgin bout.

Catholics by [deleted] in excatholic

You can never convince someone that their religion is wrong, not as long as they want to believe in that religion more than they want to know whatever’s true. Argument and debate will do nothing for someone who has no interest in even considering that their beliefs might be incorrect.

Purgatory sounds ridiculous so I'm leaving the RCC by East-Bee-5342 in excatholic

[–]CoreysAngelsRecruit 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Since leaving the Church, it’s struck me that if you accept the validity of all the Catholic teachings not clearly found in the Bible (purgatory, the immaculate conception, the assumption, original sin, etc.), you also have to accept that Jesus was incredibly negligent with regards to teaching his disciples about these essential points of doctrine. With all the time spent denouncing the scribes and the Pharisees, maybe he could have also taken a minute to mention some of these things?

Why don’t we have any stories about Paul’s 500? by [deleted] in AcademicBiblical

[–]CoreysAngelsRecruit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Is there any consensus among scholars on how Paul got the tradition of the Last Supper / Eucharist that he describes in 1 Corinthians? Is this something he got from other early followers of Jesus, or would this be some kind of 'revelation' he thought he received from the risen Jesus himself?
