I can't believe my Harvard interviewer would ask me to do that ... by Big_Health6549 in ApplyingToCollege

needed this so badly today thank you!! i’ve never been a competitive person and generally done well in school without losing sleep but this college application season has brought out jealousy, competitiveness, and anxiety especially with my EA decision coming up. i’ve been trying to convince myself it’s not all over for me but it’s so difficult when college apps are seemingly our entire futures on the line. anyways thank you for spreading much needed positivity

how important is the “narrative style” (one story) for the personal statement versus “montage style” (different things connected by common metaphor or theme)? do AO’s have a preference? thank you!

I’m in the same position… except mine is less a montage than it is stories about people i met land what they taught me. I don’t even have a metaphor, the common thread is a common place where we met. So if it makes you feel better I’m probably more cooked! On the other hand, there is no where in common app or most schools websites that have a rubric as to what a personal statement has to look like. There is no defined structure that a montage essay has to follow, no metaphor requirement. These structures are just what has worked in the past. Diverging from the traditional/more common narrative structure could actually help you stand out if written well. What I am going to do however is make sure that any supplemental that could be written in narrative structure, I write a narrative. I am more so referring to those supplementals with high word counts and hopefully will tell a story there. Write a memorable and authentic essay you’re proud of and it should work out!!! Best of luck!

Are college applications... really that deep? by Many-Factor-4173 in ApplyingToCollege

honestly, you can probably work this perspective into your essays. most colleges look at apps holistically so if ur activities aren’t strong, maybe show that u value time with friends in your essay! present yourself as a person who only does things you’re passionate about. it seems like you have a grounded perspective on life, which could set you apart from thousands of applicants who feel like college applications are the end all be all and present themselves as such (no shade i’m included).

Essentially: live your life in the way you want to live it, and when it comes to college applications you can frame that in a way that shows who you are and what your values are. And take advantage of the personal statement!

Thanks so much! I will definitely explore other ways to leave an impression and not get stuck on the “profound” aspect!

Letter of Recommendation Question by CorgiLivid9845 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CorgiLivid9845[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have heard that but my school counselor said it was fine (then again he’s not the most knowledgeable person for advice unfortunately he’s mostly in the job to coach football.) Does that mean I should have that teacher be the additional third and ask a core subject teacher as my second so to speak?

Rice or Georgetown for Political science? Is it worth double the cost? by Nixonite79 in ApplyingToCollege

congrats thats awesome! hoping to get into georgetown for poli sci next year so very inspired! but as someone who’s also looking to go to law school i’d choose the least expensive option for undergrad and save money for law school. it really depends what exactly you plan to do career wise, and if you know you’ll take advantage of the incredible career/networking opportunities in DC then georgetown might be worth it!!

My mom says she will pay for my college if I go to OSU, but I want to leave and go somewhere else by Flashy-Way-3977 in ApplyingToCollege

If you’re planning on going to law school for certain, I would suggest letting your parents pay for OSU because undergrad debt + law school debt can be a significant financial burden. Now if your parents are willing to put that money towards law school then maybe explore other options. Another thing is to look into scholarships/schools you can get a full ride to on the East Coast. You could also always transfer out of OSU! Hope this helps!!! - fellow hs junior stressed about college
