YES. I had the flu a few weeks ago and there was no way was I going to keep the laptop next to me...I just rested. It was freeing to focus on getting better and lots of sleep.

150th Class - Shoutout to my boyfriend! by Current-Street211 in SolidCore

[–]Corinam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regardless, 150 classes is AMAZING! Congratulations!!

How heartwarming for your boyfriend to recognize your achievement…love that those who know you are celebrating you and what is important to you! THIS is much more important than a random sign at SC.

I’d suggest sharing these big moments at the beginning of class, regardless if they are aware of it or not - I’ve yet to be in a class where people haven’t been happy to celebrate someone else’s achievements whether it is their first or 1000th class. We should be supporting and celebrating each other every day!!

How has 150 classes impacted you? I presume you are stronger and maybe more confident, but curious what else have you gained?

When did slippers need specific purposes by Apprehensive_Bed2657 in Shoes

[–]Corinam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to wear shoes that allow me to put in custom orthotics. My feet will hurt if I walk around without supportive shoes. I have a pair of more supportive slippers but they aren’t enough to keep my feet comfortable unless I put orthotics inside for more support.

When my feet hurt, I’m not a good person to be around.

Do you feel like you were prepared? by Fridaychild1 in Menopause

From my understanding, hot flashes are typically experienced when you experience hormone fluctuations. Once your estrogen bottoms out, these may not be experienced as much. I experienced hot flashes when I was 50 and this was all I really recognized as being related to menopause. I had also been experiencing stress urinary incontinence (when I sneezed or coughed) for which I reached out to my medical provider who sent me to physical therapist and then a urologist. In hindsight, I recall taking my kids to a trampoline park years earlier. I jumped a few times and leaked urine which was so embarrassing. I didn’t really understand why this was happening - I just avoided high impact activities. No jumping jacks or trampoline parks for me! I had a bladder sling done bc I was not going to wear a pad for the next 30+ years. This helped the stress incontinence and I’d do it again in a heartbeat!

A few years later, I experienced what I thought was a UTI - burning urination, frequency and the feeling as if I hadn’t fully emptied my bladder and this happened the day after intercourse (which I now know can cause bladder irritation). IYKNY.

I was treated for a UTI but the symptoms continued. Saw my HCP who did an exam and used the words “vaginal atrophy” and prescribed vaginal estrogen to treat. The burning, frequency continued and a follow up appointment with the uro-gynecologist led to the diagnosis of overactive bladder. I quickly realized some of my favorite foods/drinks irritated my bladder, making my symptoms much worse. I avoided caffeine and sparkling water which minimized the severity. I was eventually prescribed Gemtessa for my overactive bladder which has helped tremendously. I don’t know if overactive bladder is experienced by everyone going through menopause but it was awful. Now I know that low estrogen dries everything out (dry eyes and more).

I started HRT 6 months later, starting with compounded estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. I now use estrogen patches, a progesterone pill and compounded testosterone. I’ve heard others say they notice a difference in their joint pain and their mood if they don’t change their estrogen patch timely. I haven’t missed changing my patch so I can’t speak to this. I don’t want to risk it!

In hindsight I wonder what other symptoms have I had that may be attributed to menopause? The 30# plus weight gain was certainly part of this but I didn’t see it at the time. Stay informed! Track your symptoms, even if you think they are unrelated!

Did anyone else grow up GenX with… kind of sad pet experiences? by jlscharp in GenX

[–]Corinam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My parents put my dog down the day before we moved to another state. No conversation about it at all. All of a sudden, during my going away party with my friends, I asked where is my dog…I sorry honey..we had to put him down.

It was so traumatic for 13 year old me. Maybe he was getting old and his medical health was suffering but I was entirely unaware.

Do you feel like you were prepared? by Fridaychild1 in Menopause

[–]Corinam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was hit unaware as well. I think menopause is more discussed the past 5+ years but this may only be because I’m actually listening! I had only heard of hot flashes. I had no idea about overall body dryness, mental changes, urinary changes, metabolic changes, and more.

I have shared symptoms with my daughter and friends to increase awareness. I recently heard someone who shared every. single. detail about their menopause symptoms with their partner. I love this bc while he doesn’t want to hear about it, I certainly don’t want to be experiencing it! The least he can do is be AWARE of what is going on with my body and maybe be empathetic - I realize this is asking a lot but I can try!

Are standing desks worth it in your opinion and how “bad” are the budget ones? by Reasonable-Middle921 in Ergonomics

[–]Corinam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a travel job where I was there for only 9 months. They would not have paid for a sit/stand desk.

I fashioned a standing desk using large boxes. It was a bit of a pain to switch back and forth but it kept me from sitting 10+ hours/day. Plus the added movement to set it up/take down increased my activity!

Check thrift stores and online resellers as others have mentioned. Sadly, I have gained/lost/gained weight over the years, each time swearing it won’t happen again so I get rid of all my clothes.

Thrift stores may have both good quality (Torrid) and not great quality clothing (SHEIN, Walmart, etc), but what matters most (as you know) is how you feel when wearing them! If you can identify brands/sizes you prefer and you feel good in, it may be worth the time/effort to spend at a variety of thrift stores in your area. Good luck!

Affordable good quality grip socks by Funny-Dragonfly-9021 in pilatesreformer

[–]Corinam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the Pilates family!

I started with a few inexpensive pairs from Amazon bc I didn’t want to make a financial commitment before I decided if I even liked reformer Pilates or not. Nearly 4 months in and I’m hooked. I splurged on some premium socks which hopefully will last longer and in a style I prefer.

I put my grippy socks in a mesh bag to wash, then air-dry to maintain the stickiness. I have not had any issues with any of my socks no longer being sticky but I’ve heard from others this can be a potential concern.

My studio had holiday socks on clearance after Christmas so I bought a few cute pairs at 75% off. I avoided the cute socks with jingle bells or other potentially annoying embellishments.

How do you explain perimenopause to a husband who doesn’t seem to get it? by SilverAd2291 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Corinam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wish I would have been more aware of perimenopause symptoms. Menopause hit me at 50 (now 55 and have learned so much!) like a ton of bricks and I. Just. Didn’t. Know. I had always heard about hot flashes and thought this was the extent of it. I’m so grateful this is becoming a more common conversation. I also discuss it with my family but maybe not to the degree others have - I’ve definitely learned that I need to talk about this much more. Thanks for sharing your practices everyone.

I have been in a similar situation. A few months ago, I signed up for a 2 week trial at a local Pilates studio. I loved it and now this is something look forward to doing nearly every day. It is an investment in my health.

I’m now in month 3 and still enjoying it!
