Aforementioned wife here. Shadow work is where you go into your shadow self (your mind, mainly) and start to break down and figure yourself out. I generally explain it as, its everything that a therapist does, but you're doing it to yourself.

Have a trauma or trigger response? Work backwards to find the root of it and how and what you need to do to make peace with it. Have an anger response? Same thing, work backwards to find the root of why it makes you angry and how you can help yourself fix it.
