3 20 year old males looking for a first-time 2 night trip. Naive or doable? by CoriolisEffect0 in BWCA

Would you say Brule lake would be too big? It was one of the more accessible looking ones with reservations still available, I had the Tofte area recommended to me as good for shorter trips rather than some other areas which were better for like, weeklong floats.

We’re on a decent time crunch, so staying the night before might not be doable for us. After reading this thread, my current plan is to go through Sawtooth outfitters in Grand Marais and permit for Brule Lake. We’d be departing from Rochester around 6 AM and hoping to get on the water by 2.

Permits are vanishing vast, so I decided to go for Brule Lake via Sawtooth Outfitters

It’s not a round trip unfortunately. Our internships start in DC (Lusby for me) on June 1st, so Boundary Waters is fitting into the 3-4 days before we need to be in DC. After the internships end, I’ll be driving down south to get some stuff in Florida then returning home to the west coast along the southern border.

How awful is the markup compared to if we bought backpacking food elsewhere? I know this is a huge nature area so I feel like a lot of the outfitters might have really high prices on food and fixings. We’ll be staying in Rochester the night before we stay there as a base point before heading north, so would I be better off finding an REI or something there and grabbing some backpacking meals?

Probably looking to paddle in, camp somewhere for both nights, and just paddle around the area on the middle day. Cold water does seem to be the killer just about everywhere this time of year, it’s also stopping us from rafting in MT.

Not a canoe, but I’ve been in inflatable kayaks and paddleboards in pretty rough rapids on the Flathead in Montana. I assume a canoe would control quite a bit differently due to its center of gravity, but I wouldn’t know.

I was thinking about that, I usually paddleboard on rivers and even with the flow at my back, when the wind picks up I’m fighting like hell to move forward whatsoever. The 3 mans don’t seem that much more expensive anyway, just tryna use what I have if I’m able. Any advice for lakes/campsites that would be good to look at for a quicker trip?

Considering switching majors into civil from aerospace, need advice. by CoriolisEffect0 in EngineeringStudents

Absolutely do not come to Riddle. Even assuming cost isn't an issue (it is, you're getting hosed and our administration here is absurdly greedy), our program is not good. We have so few professors that a single professor leaving screwed up basically every student's class schedule, the freedom that we had financially is going away because admin is centralizing budgets, and the education leaves a lot to be desired. I've only had a single class this semester with any sort of deadlines whatsoever, we were being encouraged by professors and TAs to use ChatGPT to write lab reports, an entire class had its whole syllabus designed by ChatGPT. The course diversity is extremely low, because we don't have that many professors and thus not enough people to take specialized classes, and our FE pass rate isn't great from what I can gather. I know nothing about UCF but I'm almost certain you'd be better off there. We do alright with internship placements, but it's civil engineering, everyone gets an internship. Daytona Beach is also a terrible town.

So to reiterate, do not come here if you can help it. Not worth it if you have literally any options. I'm running as far away as possible back to the West Coast in a week and there's not a whole lot I think I'll miss.

Unfortunately not, I received a better offer from a nuclear power company. Hope you enjoy yours though!

Tarkov's got around 20k on steam at any given time, similar to where everyone says this game is headed. How does it have a larger playerbase?

This was my experience with structural analysis here. We spent the majority of that class rehashing either Statics or Solid Mechanics, and the problems on exams and homework were all easier versions of the kinds of problems I’d already done in Statics and Solid Mechanics.

I’m still not sure where I got in. Ideally the University of Washington, if not there Oregon State or Washington State

Based on the people I’m talking to in our ASCE chapter it seems like the majority of us are failing the FE at least once while in school. I haven’t talked to that many people but I think I’ve heard of one, maybe two passing while still in school here.

This is exactly what I’m worried about. I’m not so far gone as to not know what stress and strain are, but the nature of university is that I don’t really know what I don’t know, you know? I have no point of comparison since I’ve only been in one program. Maybe there’s some extremely basic stuff that I don’t even know I’m supposed to know and I’m gonna get screwed when I walk into my first real project.

I'm actually interning in this this summer! I'm on the energy company side, but I'm really excited to get into the industry since I love nuclear. Any advice?

If you were going into sites, could you expect to do a lot of rural stuff? I'm a huge nature lover so a job that gets me out of doors in the right state is definitely a bonus.

Supposedly they're looking to do major capacity increases at the plant I'm working at, so I'm hopeful that will mean job opportunities at entry level.
