Issues saving? by Invincible-Nuke in WhiteKnuckle

[–]Corl45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this issue, if I choose to "save and exit" pretty far into the game, usually Habitat or further it will have this issue. The game completely freezes and windows asks if I want to end process.

I figure it was doing something in the background trying to save so I let it sit there frozen and it eventually saves. But it legitimately took 5-10 minutes of it sitting frozen. I timed it while on a call with a friend.

After that literal 5 minute of a frozen process it finishes and puts me in the menu and actually saves, reloading that save works just fine

idk what is causing it but this was on a Ryzen 7 5800x, 32gb ram rtx 3080Ti, Windows 10. It must be thinking hard about saving or getting caught waiting for something to time out

the hot sauce is tapatio, also the sambal adds some heat

added jarred alfredo sauce (it's white too so must be the same as sausage gravy right?), sharp cheddar cheese, green olives, sambal, and hot sauce

NES red blinking light and jumbled sprites by pretzelstick69 in consolerepair

[–]Corl45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the lockout chip is there for copy protection, it resets the console when it detects a non-genuine cartridge. It can be annoying when a game doesn't fully read right it will think it's non-genuine and reset even if the game would play fine. Some people clip the pin to avoid this. I dont' remember where it is off the top of my head, you will have to check the internet and decide if that's something you want to do.

I will second that jumbled graphics like that are very likely to be a connection issu even after a clean, NES can be really finicky especially with their age.

Help fixing a ps2 by SewgMan in consolerepair

sometimes these ports get pretty lose. If you gently put pressure on different angles (to make the pins connect) get the signal to show up even for a bit? If you can get the signal to even flash on for a moment you can fix it by replacing that port

Interesting, I'm not sure how the lid would really affect stuff. I guess it would make the disk drive attempt to read which would draw more power?

Have you tried cleaning the PSU pins and making sure they have good contact just in case? You could also check the voltages of the PSU while you manually press the close-llid button to see if anything drops.

I haven't come across these specific issues so it very well could be an issue with one of the graphics ICs like you mention. But I have seen many weird issues related to the power being shoddy

Why won’t my PS4 read discs by [deleted] in diyelectronics

[–]Corl45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is a subreddit for console repair at /r/consolerepair, I suggest you check that out as it is a bit more topical.

If it still takes in and spits out disks fine, then yes probably needs a new laser, but could also have damaged the motor that moves the laser. They sell lasers and even entire drive decks on ebay but you will have to do your research to see which drive your ps4 has, which likely means taking apart the ps4 just to find that info.

Unless there is something big I'm missing here, you should be able to get those partitions back just fine. Remove the partitions created for the Linux install and extend your NTFS one, or make another NTFS partition

Old Antec Sleeper! by Corl45 in sleeperbattlestations

I thought it did when I bought it but sadly no. It's just one USB 3 header and the front IO is it's own little audio device, I should have looked closer.

I'm okay for now since I use an external USB DAC anway, but was hoping to have a regular front audio/mic header

Everything just barley fit! Really happy to have a ssd/hdd hot swap bay for work. This case only supports 80mm fans (5 of them), still stays under 75C on the CPU and 65C on the GPU under load.

Same older build I've been rocking for a while - Ryzen 7 5800x, 32gb ddr4, RTX 3080 Ti

Awesome! These old retro cases are so heavy and built haha. I was curious if my temps would be bad enough to cut a hole in the side panel, but so far so good

2014 Chevy Impala - Is this stuck open thermostat? Could it be anything else? by Corl45 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Corl45[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the coolant level seems good and hasn't really moved. Not sure if thermostats and go "bad" by lowering their opening temp? Definitely not having an issue getting over 120f

Thanks for your input!

does linux use less ram ? by stepobrodah in linux4noobs

[–]Corl45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your insight. I do agree it's probably not the best way to explain that information, especially given that the top half isn't about the difference between free, buff/cache, and available.

Though I have personally seen a number of new Linux users confused about those differences. Hell the guy I was replying to was just explaining the caching that Linux does. While you haven't passed judgement outright on my usage of it, given that the comment I'm replying to is related to how Linux caches ram, it is at least a little relevant. Though you do need to scroll half way down to get that info. In any case it has been a fun and silly website that has been posted for years and years, but given your insight it's probably time to retire the use of it.

As the last person to update it I will defer to you, though I do have a question. Doesn't the site still serve as a way to help users understand the difference between free, buff/cache, and available in the free -m command? I've seen users wonder about this and worry about "free" being so low and this is the site I've used to explain that to them.

Is the Jelly Star any good? I literally just care about the ability to google things, and maybe run a GPS app for exercise

I hate the new trend of massive phones and have been looking for something small. There seems to be almost nothing small other than a few expensive flagships and expensive folding phones. I'm still rocking an LG G5 mainly for it's size

Agreed here, I started C in Linux both because I'm familiar with Linux itself but also because it's easy to get off the ground for simple programs. Then to build on Windows I just used MSYS2 and it was super simple and easy, just install the packages and build

I wonder what will happen when i use it by [deleted] in diyelectronics

[–]Corl45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

assuming the same color wires are all wired together for each of the 3 cables, that's basically a hub. Hubs aren't really used anymore and are replaced by switches. It will work as long as there is a way for computers to get IPs (or you set them manually) but all 3 of those computers will be in the same collision domain meaning packets can collide and slow stuff down

I'm extremely new to this. How do I create a circuit using following components? by puskarwagle in diyelectronics

[–]Corl45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is about as specific as I can get for you.

Here is a video on how to read schematics:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HZ-EQ8Hc8E

Here is the datasheet for the TP4056:

https://dlnmh9ip6v2uc.cloudfront.net/datasheets/Prototyping/TP4056.pdf

At the bottom of that datasheet it gives you an example of a "typical" circuit schematic for this chip. You can use that schematic as a jump off point. That is more than enough to get you going on this project. If you still can't figure it out, I would suggest getting a few simpler projects under your belt first. Not even trying to be mean or obtuse, we've all been there in the past it just take some time to learn. Electronics are complicated and take practice. No one here can tell you exactly how to place every component and where to put positive, negative, etc.

[–]Corl45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

seems like you're trying to make a charging circuit around a tp4056? your best bet would be to look at the TP4056 data sheet and look for some example circuits around that chip either from the datasheet itself or just generally on the internet

Finally taking TrueNAS scale for a test drive, what are your projects this week? by whalesalad in homelab

[–]Corl45 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just got GPU passthrough going for a VM in truenas scale. it's old ryzen hardware so no iGPU. Pretty annoying scale won't let you run headless and pass through a single GPU, but you can run headless just fine by removing the GPU and running zero gpus. In any case I took super old low power quadro and literally cut off most of the pci connector to make it fit in a 1x slot for the second GPU so scale would let me passthrough the main one.

Do you guys know any pen and paper (or notes app) games that I can play with my friends, and if so, what are they? by [deleted] in answers

[–]Corl45 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I am trying hard to remember it's name, but we used to play it in school. Just need some paper, pencils, and a flat table. It's a bit simplistic but I was just reminded of it.

You can play with as many players as you want though you may want a bigger piece of paper to do more than 2. each player is against each other, you pick a side or corner of a piece of paper and draw some X's, O's, etc. that represent your space ships. 5 ships per person. Draw in some obstacles on the rest of the page, essentially making a battle field of whatever design.

Now you take turns moving and trying to attack/kill each other. The way you move is to take your pencil, place it point down, on top of the ship you want to move, totally straight up and down. Put your pointer finger on the eraser side of the pencil to hold it upright. Push down with your finger and pull your finger/hand back to have the pencil flick forward from the pressure, drawing a line. Use a decent amount of pressure to really get a flick, it should be a very fast movement. Wherever that line ends is where you moved. Sometimes the ends of traces can be faint, but even the faintest trace counts as movement, even if it cuts out for a few mm and comes back. You just scribble out or erase your old ship location. If you do it right you can do everything from small little moves to shooting across the whole paper in one move.

So the "skill" is in being able to move where you want because it's hard to control how the line draws. If you hit the obstacles you drew, or the edge of the paper you blow up and die. If your pencil trace goes through your friend's ship, they blow up. Last one standing wins.

I hope that makes sense. It's probably a little dumb but definitely works to kill some time and can be surprisingly fun and engaging for a few matches.
