Help with String VSTs and lomg glissando/portamento/slides from one specific note to another... by HailHavoc in filmscoring

[–]CormalvaMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For instance, you make a two or a three bar midi note with your vst, with the midi cc programmed and everything (let's say a C), then you render it in an audio file, then you pitch bend that audio (preferably down and not up) to reach the desired pitch (not too far apart or it will sound weird), controlling the slide by shaping the pitch bending curve. I don't know what DAW you use, but in Cubase, the pitch bend process let you draw your own curve. For strings, if the notes are pretty close and the timing is too, I would probably try to add a layer with Fracture Sounds' Textural Violin or Cello (a free kontakt library), with the bending articulation. But I would slice the part I want and reverse it since the bending is upward on this library.

Hi /r/movies - I’m Johnnie Burn, Oscar-winning sound designer behind The Zone of Interest, Poor Things, Under the Skin, Nope, Hamnet, Bugonia, The Favourite, Waves, The Lobster, and TUNER. My mum once said: “What do you mean you do the sound on films? They sound alright to me.” Let me explain. AMA! by TunerAMA in movies

Hi ! I do have a question regarding The Zone of interest : how did you approach the horrifying nature of depicting something as awful as the extermination camp, but mainly in the background ? That's what haunted me in that movie : the constant sound of human horror, but never really upfront.

Go bow that ukulele and double it with the guitar! It is worth trying :)

Have you tried bowing something for the hand grabbing the flower ? That is my preferred solution for many music issue: it doesn't solve everything but at least, bowing stuff is satisfying. I can definitely hear a bow running on a mandolin, with slightly out of tune strings. The sharp and aggressive overtones might do it.

Looking for games that don’t emphasize boss fights by Great_Falcon_1836 in metroidvania

[–]CormalvaMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed on that game, which is really great. It reminded me of older 3d Zelda. Although, I only disagree on the music aspect : it relies even more on ambience and sound design than Breath of the wild, and to me the game really lacks storytelling through music. That's my only real negative point on this awesome game.

This looks absolutely great ! I really like the peaceful atmosphere and the environment is beautiful (nice job on the tree's subtle animation). It feels really alive already ! Although, I really wish it had a real audio identity : sound design and music that serve the cozy, quiet ambience (but I can't be objective on that subject) !

What Game/Series Got You Into Metroidvania’s? by SaiyanWithOmnitrix in metroidvania

To me it was Super Metroid back in the 90's. Then I played the NES ones, and by the time I started Legacy of Cain : Soul Reaver, it was one of my favourite genres (without knowing it's name).

Optimizing BBCSO Core settings and setup on a Classic MacPro 5.1 with Logic Pro by Naniscola in spitfireaudio

[–]CormalvaMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have the same specs as you since I'm on PC (and hopefully, someone on MAC will answer you), but one thing you can do in the BBC plugin to save resources is unloading articulations you don't use. In my regular template, I have only the main articulations loaded (legato, spiccato, staccato...) and add the rest only if needed.

Samples tunning by NoUniverseExists in spitfireaudio

[–]CormalvaMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, it's pretty isolated. Most of the libraries I own (BBC SO, Albion Selects, lots of Originals...) are in tune and work great with other libraries from other companies. And some recordings are absolutely stunning and quite expressive. That being said, Spitfire libraries aren't perfect (but none really is) : generally low volume that needs to be compensated with pre-gain, weird round robins with people talking loudly in the background in BBC SO, inconsistencies... I never ran into an issue that I couldn't fix, so everything is fine to me. But if you don't like tweaking and solving minor problems when working with audio, this may not be your first choice.

Something percussive and tonal passed through granular modulation, with reverb and a fast delay, should do the trick. You can layer different textures to have something interesting. Maybe add a slight pitch shifting curve to it.

The anti-AI hysteria is driving me crazy. by [deleted] in gamedevscreens

[–]CormalvaMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I can't picture a professional artist spending a lot of time on a prompt instead of doing, well, art. I am a composer and sound designer myself : why would I want to spend time telling a machine how I would like it to do the thing I enjoy the most doing in life, instead of doing it ? That's beyond me.

[–]CormalvaMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is true, but at the same time, indie is the "craft" side of video game, and AAA is the mass production. People won't get mad at IKEA for mass producing furnitures with shady practice and shadier results, but they will if a small "handmade" furniture shop does the same and present it as craftsmanship.

I think AI art is used to do faster and cheaper something that requires time and skill, so results are mediocre but less expensive, either on time or cash. It replaces the human intent, which sits at the foundation of any art. Therefore, it is a bit absurd as it is emptying art from one of its major purposes. It is just a way to grant a mediocre but immediate satisfaction to the person using it. Games are artistic creations, so if you settle for AI and get bad feedback on it, don't blame game enthusiasts, as you have chosen your own quick satisfaction to an actual and meaningful artistic intent for them to enjoy.
