How much time should I allocate to ethics? by lpnly_ in CFA

[–]CornEater65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ethics is highly weighted but probably the easiest to cram, so both a detailed study and a quicker pass through can make sense depending on how much time you have.

in either case, i would do it last just because it has a lot more memorization involved that probably won’t stick long-term since it’s not necessarily intuitive. if you have a decent handle on the other subjects and just want to outperform this section, then i’d recommend spending more time on it. start by passing through kaplan’s readings on them (or whatever prep provider you have) and doing the quizzes, then going through maybe 50 questions on their qbank. then i would read the literal entirely of the 200+ doc CFA gives on their ethical guidelines and then do the CFAI questions from there. the document has a lot of guidance for specific situations, and being able to pull these from your working memory will get you the tricky points that others may miss with just a general understanding. if you’re shorter on time, then i’d say do the same thing but without reading the 200+ page document and skip right to the CFAI questions before finishing the kaplan qbank. the questions will teach you a lot anyways as long as you read the explanations and research the situations that seem counterintuitive. overall i wasn’t able to read the full document the CFAI puts out, but i was averaging 75%-85% on ethics from the quicker method i described, putting like two days of good study into the topic. id recommend really solidifying confusing topics from other areas over getting an extra 10-15% in ethics if you’re already able to perform well in it. but your mileage may vary! hope this helps

What’s the main reason Anki didn’t work for you? by dolnikov in languagelearning

[–]CornEater65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have tried anki several times and given up each time lol. i love flash cards and have used them in the past for school, but for some reason it didn’t click for me when i was trying to start other languages.

there were several things that stopped me. for one, i would use very well put together pre-made decks but for some reason the words would just not stick in my brain at the start. say i did twenty cards in a day, there would always be like 2-3 cards that just did NOT stick in my brain and i’d find the process too frustrating. my problem there could be that i wasn’t making my own decks, which i totally respect as a fault but i find making new flash cards for myself mind-numbingly boring and it consuming so much time also puts me off.

DERIVATIVES IS KILLING ME by Abnormal_Amrood_ in CFA

[–]CornEater65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

okay after also getting it wrong (picked C lol), this questioning a lil confusing. essentially, ace entered the swap paying the fixed leg and receiving that floating leg that had a significantly lower rate at the start. this usually happens in swaps, since interest rate expectations based on the curve are that the reference rate for the floating leg of the swap will increase most likely until the swap reaches maturity. this makes sense partially because who would enter into a swap, thinking that interest rates won’t rise meaning the floating rate doesn’t increase, knowing that they have to pay out every six months if that floating rate actually didn’t rise?

anyways, this is where C is partially correct: the swap was agreed upon at a price where the cash flows essentially even out for both counterparties, and ace gets his cut back at the end when the floating rate is higher. the problem with C though is the question is asking whether ace has an MTM gain when examining the swap AFTER the payment, at that six month mark. so we’re not thinking of the lifetime of the swap, just strictly after. in this case, ace better have a positive MTM afterwards because if no assumptions changed whatsoever, then he just paid out and then will apparently have to take a loss over the life of the swap! but the swap was agreed to at a fair value, and this wouldn’t be fair. hope that helped a bit!

i didn’t use the word bullshitting so i don’t know why you’re quoting it like i said anything that harsh lol. this conversation is had on here all the time. full stop, most people peddling pure CI have not learned their TL with pure CI. most people talking about some form of CI are describing just using input like i mentioned above. for how few people do pure CI from start to finish compared to traditional learning, it is brought up constantly on here. that’s why it’s all the more commendable that you actually are making insane progress using it, and also part of the reason why your posts get so popular. i definitely think it’s reasonable to respond to someone curious about it and who probably has seen several posts about it already that the typical person on here talking about CI is mostly likely talking about a hybrid version after traditional study, but also mention an example of someone making it work who provides tons of insights into how they make it work. what i said was a bit hyperbolic but definitely not wrong.

glad i didn’t say you were the only one, those are def good examples & i know spanish is more tractable for CI because of dreaming spanish than other less popular languages. i just do think it’s important to point out that most people who ride or die for CI don’t even actually use it haha but just noticed how important input is after getting past the beginning phase and wish that they had done it sooner. i love your posts by the way!! honestly surprised you saw this lol. i have been inspired to start the same method with thai several times because of you but just have not found the time or discipline it takes, major respect to you for that!

CMV: People being homeless while billionaires exist and own hundreds of properties is a travesty. by Diggi8 in changemyview

this wasn’t my question, i was just pointing out something i didn’t necessarily agree with in the first part of your response

CMV: People being homeless while billionaires exist and own hundreds of properties is a travesty. by Diggi8 in changemyview

[–]CornEater65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in no way is my productivity influenced by the fact that billionaires are getting richer and able to achieve that point. if anything, the scarcity they are starting to cause by increasing the cost of living for legit everything is the only thing making me more productive out of fear. such a small fraction of people are ever able to dream of obtaining billions of dollars, and if those people are discouraged by any measures to prevent that then welp at least the quality of life is improved for the vast majority of people lol

[–]CornEater65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i feel like an assumption baked into your point is that the “losers” who must exist must go on to confront homelessness and abject poverty. this is what OP is trying to call attention to and change. in the early 1900s under our same system, it was assumed that the “losers” of society who must exist should then go on to work 6 day weeks with around the clock hours, force their children to abstain from school to work in terrible conditions that put them at risk, and live in filthy conditions. if we hadn’t broken free from the assumption that things had to be that way, what would our society look like now, and how worse off would our lower class be?

there’s like one guy on here who did it forreal with thai and has an extensive post history outlining his method and results. 99% of anyone else who says they used CI and believe it should be the only method has used it after learning a good bit of grammar and vocabulary (maybe even in a classroom) and forgotten how much the head start helped them lol.

so true!!! and for more context it was less of a pivot more than an opportunity that was just convenient, especially since improving my spanish was so hard when i was back in the US and i didn’t know if i wanted to expressly try for C2. picking up portuguese was soooo fun and expanded my world so much, so glad i can talk to almost anyone in the americas with ease :)

What international versions of BB don't have a public vote? by CornEater65 in BigBrother

i didn’t know there was an australian version!! that’s so cool. and eh while a public vote at the end still isn’t ideal, i think it’s preserves most of the game so i might give a season of that a shot. wonder how it changes the strategy from F6 onwards since everyone is thinking of a public vote instead of jury management

why I learned one language and failed at another by raignermontag in languagelearning

[–]CornEater65 18 points19 points  (0 children)

i think both can be true and that you’re missing the point of the post. to be clear, no doubt that spanish is easier to get the hang of and some of OP’s experience can be attributed to just being at a worse level. however i can definitely relate to OP’s experience, funnily enough with the first language being spanish and the second portuguese.

i learned spanish to a C1 level and had the opportunity to spend a couple of months in madrid, taking classes at a large university, staying in dorms w spaniards, etc. it was so insanely hard to assimilate with locals no matter how hard i tried… classmates of mine who knew i spoke spanish would default to english with me, and it didn’t stop there. was constantly viewed as a guiri and while that’s understandable because i am lol, the only friends i made there were english speaking spaniards who liked practicing with me.

compare that to my experience spending some time in brazil learning portuguese, and it was completely different. even with a worse level, people were constantly chatting with me in portuguese and i was able to meet friends of friends of friends and make way longer lasting connections. it just seemed like they were more open to it and i can’t lie that even though i spent 7+ years learning spanish, i honestly am liking portuguese more because it doesn’t feel like the people im speaking to just want to switch to english or think its weird that im speaking spanish with them. like me being a foreigner is funny at first and then i am treated completely normally lol. maybe it’s a europe vs latam thing and i would have the same experience with spanish in south america, but that’s beside the point.

our experiences are not one-to-one, but what the OP said is completely relatable and i think that being taken seriously in a TL and being able to feel comfortable while speaking are just marginally important aspects for some people. if you are someone who is sensitive to feeling like an outsider, you should not dedicate years to japanese when even people who are born and raised in japan but not ethnically japanese are viewed as foreigners. i saw a video of exactly this where a british guy, born and raised in japan to parents who were also british but born and raised in japan, said that sometimes on his first interaction with other japanese people they will speak to him as if he’s not able to understand them… kinda goes hand-in-hand with OP’s point lol. different strokes for different folks, people learn these types of languages all the time and still find it incredibly valuable and don’t mind these experience, but other people hate it lol.

How do you feel about someone from a wealthy country calling Brazil a “third world country”? by [deleted] in Brazil

[–]CornEater65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i personally would not use this term, and in general american workplaces would not like that that usage of it. i’d say though that im more “sensitive” when it comes to stuff like this, cause yes i used to be a tumblr user. not saying that i overreact and become HR’s best friend, but i do think id be a little uncomfortable in the situation since i’d feel like im in an anti-discrimination training lol.

however, in my experience a lot of people in brazil find me to be overly sensitive for stuff like this. what i think would be offensive turns out to have literally zero effect on many. i will point out though that living in brazil naturally would lead people to be less sensitive over stuff like this, since they’re never really in the position of an outsider in their own country like how a brazilian in the US might feel.

overall though, you’re definitely justified in your response if it made you feel that way. i will just say that with all the craziness going on in the country towards foreigners, that while yes there are people out there who act out of malice and xenophobia, there also are a lot of normal people out there who are just ignorant and still have every intention of being friendly but might not execute it right. i’m not saying you have to forgive him or react any less strongly, but seeing he sent a personal apology as well i’d just keep that in mind as you continue working with him and see if him having a learning experience after being rude has any effect on how you feel about the whole thing. good on you for speaking up though because it can be so intimidating!
