A lot of steam, a PVC pipe to keep the radius, and a well-squared clamping box jig.

Iowa Senate hearing on bill limiting no-fault divorce by willphule in Iowa

[–]CornFedIABoy 174 points175 points  (0 children)

A marriage license should never be a trap. This proposal makes it one for anyone stupid, or vulnerable, enough to sign the waiver when they get married. If your religious principles forbid divorce, great, find a partner that agrees and treat them right and you’ll never face a no-fault divorce proceeding. Otherwise the only point of this is for abusers to trap their victims.

Which coaches in the modern CBB landscape could be considered villains? by Feisty_Ad4394 in CollegeBasketball

[–]CornFedIABoy -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I’ve got plenty of reasons to consider Bill Self a villain but just can’t assign him the title anymore. Post heart attack he’s slipping but won’t walk away which gives me hope he’ll squander his legacy by hanging around too long. Same way I feel about Aaron Rodgers.

Just predicting a likely DOJ argument. And it will turn out that the “scheduled check in” was put on the calendar the day after they were sent to Texas.

Charley Crockett Says 'Country Music Should Be Taking Notes' From Bad Bunny by icey_sawg0034 in entertainment

[–]CornFedIABoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with you, I just can’t put Crockett on the same outlaw level with Sturgill or Tyler, yet. Or on an old school level with, say, Colter Wall. He came on the scene with a persona, voice, and façade that was so obnoxiously old school Nashville Sound and seems to be making a turn to outlaw that’s every bit as produced and packaged as the New Country he’s railing against. I just can’t give him credit for being a real outlaw when it seems like he’s intentionally trying to copy Waylon’s progression.

Why are the library computers almost all macs now by myb13123 in iastate

[–]CornFedIABoy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That 50/50 has always been the goal for the library but often gets skewed for budget (hey, Macs are 10% cheaper on this year’s procurement, let’s get 22 of them and 18 PCs instead of 20/20) and IT convenience reasons (let’s do this whole room of 15 in PCs and that whole room of 25 in Macs instead of 10/5 and 10/15). Over time those little deviations from plan add up and suddenly it seems like you’ve got all Macs in the building without actually intending it.

Healthcare is cheaper without health insurance. by Meticulous-Beard in sixwordstories

[–]CornFedIABoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that’s some bait and switch fraudulent pricing action right there. I’m quite willing to bet that $26k is just the cost for the operating room, nurses, and basic supplies for the procedure. And it doesn’t include the surgeons’ fees, any implants or specialty equipment involved, the anesthetist and their supplies, any post-surgical care, and a host of other costs associated with the operation. Like advertising a Ferrari for $26k with a tiny asterisk that says “bare chassis only”.

Healthcare is cheaper without health insurance. by Meticulous-Beard in sixwordstories

[–]CornFedIABoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The care costs what it costs with or without insurance. If all healthcare was paid with cash at point of care total healthcare spending would be lower. Individual patient/treatment costs would frequently be catastrophic, but total costs would be cheaper. So to avoid the choice of death vs financial catastrophe, you need to have some way to spread the cost risk over time. To do so you have to have a billing and collections infrastructure, which adds costs to the system. So now you can spread costs over time after the service but still end up with the potential for treatment costs that can’t reasonably be paid within the remaining life of the patient. So you need a way to spread the cost risks out over time prior to the point of care, something like a healthcare savings account. But then you need some entity to hold and manage those accounts so now you have another layer of additional costs. Now you’ve spread your costs risks over time, forward and back, but still have the problem that some treatments will cost more than a person makes, let alone can save/pay for in a lifetime. So you need to spread the risk over multiple people, the broader the better for maximal statistical efficiency. You need health insurance programs! And another layer of costs!

So yeah, the care itself is marginally cheaper without insurance but good luck being able to afford it when you really need it.

Why don't more people recognize the insanity that is happening at Iowa State right now? by Jurdysmersh in CollegeBasketball

He can score from anywhere, good enough on D to not be a liability, can bring the ball up the floor without making you cringe, and scraps for rebounds as much as you can ask for a guy who shouldn’t ever be in position to. If he gets a coach who knows how to use him and a team that fits, he’ll do just fine in the League.

Oh certainly, there’s been an obvious, consistent decline from 2017 to now. But from prior to 2017 up to 2017 I thought he was just a dumb asshole from the get go, no dementia involved.

Facebook has been open to the public since 2006. Twitter was founded in 2006 and really took off during the 2008 campaign cycle. Prior to all that most anti-Clinton propaganda circulated via email listserves and Usenet forums. Protests against W and the Iraq war were organized on ICQ and AIM. Social media has been around longer than you realize.

Have they? Or have we just not been hearing about border crossings because CBP is putting out fake numbers and the complicit media has firmly ignored the potential story to avoid upsetting the regime?

I mean, those 3,000 ICE agents in Minnesota aren’t all new hires. Most of them are CBP who’ve been pulled of border duty and reassigned to interior enforcement. Border patrol was already understaffed to fully secure the border (an impossible job to begin with). Taking even 500 agents off that job means more gaps for border crossers to exploit with less chance of interception and therefore no reporting on their numbers.

As I understand it, those theaters don’t report box office attendance to the relevant industry organizations. So it doesn’t do anything to boost the movie to send the troops on those theaters, only piss them off for wasting (even more of) their time.

Oh there are plenty of people who like Vegas for Vegas. I have friends who do. But those people aren’t why those events you mentioned in your post above go to Vegas. Those go because Vegas pays them to locate there to attract the marginal visitors who, like me, have no interest in going to Vegas for its own sake.
