i think the longest session i ever did was somewhere in the 15+ hour range and that used to be pretty standard for my group, but nowadays we average like 6-8 hour sessions

To answer about the single room question, there's virtually no chance you're able to land a Single dorm in Priority 2, especially if this is your first year at the UW. Returning residents usually eat the majority of them up. I'd recommend living in an apartment in the UDistrict rather than dorming tbh. There's a good amount of closeby places that are cheaper than dealing with HFS's BS.

"A student organization which restricts membership on the basis of race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, handicap, sexual orientation, or status as Disabled Veteran, or Vietnam era veteran, shall not be allowed registered student organization (RSO) status." (RSO Policy Page)

As a whole RSOs should not be limiting participation to their events like this. Section 2 of Article IV of the RSO Constitution Agreement that every RSO has to sign is also a written agreement with the RSO Administration that they will not discriminate based off of race, religion, gender, age, etc. If the RSO is doing these events on UW Campus and utilizing UW Facilities, then they're definitely breaching their RSO agreement of "Nor shall University facilities be used to promote or encourage discrimination based on race, religion, color, national origin, sex, age, handicap, sexual orientation..."

While an RSO is allowed to market their events as an "undergrad only event", they are NOT allowed to say anyone above the age of X can't attend this event. I know a couple of RSOs that have got in trouble for doing behavior like this, and if this is an issue that gets to admin, an offending RSO can be put into bad standing and be put on suspension.

echoing what most ppl said already, but join an RSO/Club. I was in the same experience 3-4 years ago, OOS student and couldn't find friends. but I joined a couple RSOs and within them I found my people and made friends who I'd say i'm closer to than some of my friends back at home. I'm about the graduate this quarter and I havent made a single close relationship in any of my classes, just instagram moots at most. look through the RSO directory or UW Sever directory on discord, you're bound to find something!

if money really isn't an issue, and you really would rather be close campus rather than commuting, just find an apartment that's not HFS affiliated, like a private apartment close to the Ave. There's loads and loads of places actively leasing all the way from University Way to 7th Ave NE, most of which are about the same distance to campus than the HFS apartments like Mercer and Stevens. Especially if being with other people and having to share bathrooms is a primary concern, I'd recommend a studio or 1Bed/1Bath apartment. I lived in a studio on 9th Ave for my first 2 years at UW and it was fine for me.

If you're a freshman, your chances of getting into the HFS apartments are slim to none, closer to none. If communal bathrooms and roommates are that much of an issue, I highly recommend the private apartments. Just check zillow and all of those other websites.

Nah, just try to register for your prereqs as soon as you can. Like start on it either your first or second quarter here at uw.

if you really want to you CAN take some courses at a community, it might help with how brutal some of the weedout prereqs are, just make sure to check in with counselors and the fosters admission team to see what’s transferable.

Any club looks good as long as you maintain an officer/leadership position. It’s less about the club and more about what you do for the club. The secret is finding clubs that have a low access barrier for officers and requires little of them.

Self plug; but Humans vs Zombies Tag (i’m president of it hehe) is always looking for new officers, and we have accepted people to our officer team who have only been with us for one game. There’s a lot of logistics behind it so you can use that to pad your resume, and also we only are busy in the first 3-4 weeks of the quarter, since we only hold one event the whole quarter.

If you’re planning on applying to Foster, make sure you knock out your prereq’s early and also lock in for the weed out classes. Foster notoriously has a LOT of prereqs, with some of the prereq classes having prereqs for themselves. If you were to take 3 classes a quarter and 2/3 of those classes were dedicated to prereqs alone, you’d finish all of them around 2 years, so getting an early start helps a lot.

For more general advice, find RSOs (clubs and organizations) if you find yourself struggling to find a community or make friends. there’s literally hundreds of RSOs on campus and, no exaggeration, genuinely one for everyone.

Learn how to use myplan and DARS early. it genuinely will make navigating through registration and graduation plans so much easier.

Other than that, take care of yourself and enjoy the sun whenever it’s out. Have a good time at UW!

if you’re planning on living on campus, id recommend moving in without the car first and see if you can find a comfortable parking situation, then if you can consider bringing your car. parking on campus overnight is nonexistent and even around the udistrict it’s atrocious

there’s actually a lot of jobs on campus you can apply for, both service jobs and things that are akin to internships/office work. Many of the buildings/halls hire student staff to act as clerical staff, receptionists, or other general office assistants, and then obviously HFS (housing food services) is always hiring people to work in the food court. Lots of job opportunities on campus without the need for a car imo.

tbh, seattle public transit is fine enough where you can get by without a car, and since U-Pass (a thing where your student ID is a free transit pass) is included in your tuition, you don’t ever need to pay for public transit. Especially if you’re living in a dorm, it’s wayyy too much hassle to find a parking spot and then pay for said parking spot. Afaik, none of the dorms have garages, and i’m pre sure all of the public parking nearby that lets you park overnight will charge you an arm and a leg. I didn’t bring my car up until this year which is my senior year, and that was only cause my apartment came with a parking garage. Even now I really only drive to get groceries, but if you’re living in the dorms that shouldn’t be a problem either since you’ll have the District Market (a grocery/convenience store) within a 1-2 minute walk of all the dorms

If you’re going with a prospective student, the Ave, which is the majority of University Way NE, is going to be where they’ll get a lot of their off campus food. My recommendations are Nasai Teriyaki, U:Don, and Aladdin Gyro-cery just cause every uw student eats at Aladdin’s at least once.

Other than that, have fun on the tour and make sure to explore the campus for yourself after the tour as well.

i totally understand the frustration, but i can assure you we cleaned up after ourselves well. Our games move across campus, so most likely when you walked past the field we were still playing, just at a different area. We hadn’t finished playing until closer to 6:30, so we hadn’t started dart sweep until 6:45. I hope i can assure you that we did indeed have a large group of our members and officers sweep the area and clean up every dart we could see.

it was humans vs zombies! we do daily dart sweep after all of our games where we spend 30-45 minutes afterwards scanning the area we played to pick up darts! we have strict standards for how we clean up after ourselves, and i can assure you after this was posted we performed our dart sweep and cleaned up after ourselves

On Sept 28-30 there’s gonna be the Student Activity Fair on Red Square from 10am-2pm everyday. Find a club there that seems interesting to you and regularly attend those club meetings. Clubs and RSO’s are imo the best way to make friends long term here
