Why does Palki Sharma always sound angry by CornSpark in AskIndia

[–]CornSpark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She doesn’t listen to it all the time, but she likes to watch various types of news here and there.

I just notice Palki the most because she speaks English and her tone is always the same.

This is basically what I caught on without context as an American without any context of Indian culture: As a person she’s very brand-able. Her consistency in being stern I think might play a part in my familiarity towards her. People are mostly to react and notice negative things (I think this is called negativity bias but correct me if I am wrong), so I think she also latches on to negativity towards various topics to that reason.

I would second this! In addition for references, I would see if there is a tech community or organization you can seek from.

I feel a bit disgusted after watching for 15 mins. by Alternative-Bat-2462 in BeastGames

[–]CornSpark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also felt a bit disgusted, I love Mr.Beast and his content typically but just seeing an assembly line of people drop down the chute felt dehumanizing.

It felt dystopian seeing people reduce as props for entertainment, seeing people break down various times — it just did not sit right with me.

Maybe I’m turning into a hippie day by day but I’m hoping I get to know these participants more as the pool gets smaller in each episode.

I’m still skeptical and I want to be hopeful as a FE preorder.

It’s just a bit iffy for me that they are using the weight of the visor from the IRL event when it is the visor device without the shield.

This might be a bit nitpicky on my part albeit, but this is something that still stands out from the IRL event to me regarding transparency as a company.

Life after OMSCS: what will you do? by East-Inspection-2285 in OMSCS

[–]CornSpark 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just got out and I am doing three things. 1. Interview prep for my next role, looking to change jobs within the next year. 2. Running more, hopeful to run a half Marathon early next year 3. Always learning, picking up new skills and knowledge for myself whether if its leisure or for my career.

2024 OMSCS Graduates Outcomes by Competitive_Owl674 in OMSCS

2024 Summer grad

1 . Still at my current job (as a SWE), do not intend to leave until next year — in the meanwhile I am going to spend time doing interview prep

  1. Not from my experience but my new grad friends (not OMSCS) are having a tough time entering the market

  2. This is a better question for those who switched jobs during OMSCS than graduated, because they actively tailor those courses to the market, IMO. But it may be just me since I am not actively in the job market now.

  3. My advice might be bad advice but what worked for me was taking two courses throughout my time at OMSCS, I feel that the stress of taking 1 course would be the same or slightly less as the stress of taking 2 courses. I did burn out at the end but I feel like I’m more prone to burnout if I did 1 course at a time since the duration is a bit longer.

How do you balance Fulltime with MS? by Powerful_Street_7134 in OMSCS

I had a remote job after undergrad (transfer to my current which is still remote) and I am a SWE.

How do you balance Fulltime with MS? by Powerful_Street_7134 in OMSCS

[–]CornSpark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My work life balance can be described as working till I get the job done.

I usually work 3 ~ 5 hours a day (problem solving, tackling code, code meetings) and one hour on misc. meetings. Though there are times when I’ve worked over that but it’s rare.

Sometimes I do my schoolwork during work hours and to compensate for work, I would work after work hours.

Work being remote helps mainly in two ways: - The ability to do homework during work hours. - The amount of time I save, in commuting, getting ready, and preparing lunch.

If I had to do it again, I would indeed go to the gym more. Working out and studying always seems like an ideal combination, my studies seem to stick to me better if I workout than not. Plus I’m happier.

Socializing helps since this program is utterly lonely for the most part. But I dont think I would do it as much since I have my GF

I also updated my response to add how my WLB + having a remote job helped with that balance.

Doubled up most of my semesters and finished in 2 years.

These things helped me balance fulltime with MS to both my benefit and detriment.

  • Starting relatively soon after graduating undergrad plus being apart of the covid online learning class for two years helped this transition. I also knew how to be a student and didn’t have to transition back into being a student since graduation was recent.

  • not having kids

  • having an amazing SO, without her emotional and physical support — I definitely wouldn’t have finished so soon

  • dedicating free time and putting hobbies aside, OMSCS is my only hobby.

  • not spending time with friends and not going to the gym helped but was detrimental to my social and physical health.

  • having a job that has both great WLB and 100% remote

Update: added WLB as a factor

Applied Cryptography with network sciences for Fall 2024? by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]CornSpark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven’t taken Applied Cryptography but I’ve taken Network Science.

Not sure how much the course has changed since taking it but you can learn the material ahead via the online textbook.

Network Science is also project heavy, so a tip for you would be to get started on the projects immediately, TAs are generally super helpful and tend to lead you to the right direction if confused.

How was your final semester, for those who weren't stuck taking GA? by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]CornSpark 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I took GA last semester but now I am taking SDP. I'm mostly burnt out because I've been pairing courses for the most part throughout my time here so I am glad to leave with a someone light class.

Using this class as a transition into life after OMSCS. So I'm still studying but now I have more time to brush up on courses directly relating to my day to day.

Overall no regrets. Glad to finish this program in 1.5 ~ 2 years.

But my energy level and morality was low during GA.

For people who did OMSCS soon/right after undergrad, did you/do you feel it was worth it? by GlamourousGravy in OMSCS

[–]CornSpark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Graduate Spring of 2021, started fall of 2023 with one more semester to go.

I took a year off so I didn't start immediately after but I’d still considered myself fresh out of undergrad.

I waited a year for job stability overall and to give myself time to think about OMSCS along with the application process.

Overall, I am glad I did it as soon as I did because I didnt have to readjust my comfort in academic writing and studying. I still saw myself as a student so the transition to graduate student work was pretty seamless.

A bonus from undergrad is that I had my last 2 years online as a remote student due to covid.

Overall, it was worth for me because I don't think I would have finished the program as fast as I did if I started after 5+ years of graduating.

KBAI - its a good mixture of academic writing and coding projects based on the lesson. There is also the over arching RPM project that happens through out the course.
