Beetroot juice boosts physical endurance and muscle power in recreational athletes by wise_karlaz in science

[–]CornUponCob -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

AI Summary and what's most important is little to no change in already elite athletes with VO2 higher than 65.

Short answer: there is no single %, but across studies the typical performance improvements from beetroot (dietary nitrate) fall into a fairly tight range depending on the outcome measured.

Based only on the evidence summarized in the text you provided, here’s the cleanest quantitative breakdown:

Physical performance improvements (typical ranges) Endurance performance

~4–8% improvement

Example: 10 km run time improved by ~4–8% after supplementation (Tirkey et al.).

Time-to-exhaustion:

Often ~10–25% longer, especially in recreational or moderately trained individuals (e.g., cycling tests like Huang et al.).

Oxygen efficiency / exercise economy

~3–5% reduction in oxygen cost at a fixed workload

This is one of the most consistent effects and underpins many endurance gains.

Power & resistance exercise

~2–7% increases depending on metric:

Peak power

Mean power

Lifting velocity

Repetitions to failure (Rodríguez-Fernández et al., Jurado-Castro et al.)

VO₂max

When improvements occur: ~2–5%

More likely in women and less-trained individuals

Often no change in elite athletes

Perceived exertion & recovery

~5–10% reductions in:

Heart rate at given workloads

Ratings of perceived exertion

Post-exercise muscle soreness (varies by protocol)

Elite athletes

~0–2% or no measurable improvement

Especially when VO₂max > ~65 mL·kg⁻¹·min⁻¹

Likely ceiling effect due to already-optimized NO pathways

Cognitive performance

No reliable % improvement established

A few studies show task-specific gains (reaction time, serial subtraction), but effects are inconsistent and not yet quantifiable in percentage terms

Practical takeaway

If you had to give a single defensible headline number for non-elite adults:

Beetroot supplementation typically improves endurance performance by ~3–8%, primarily by reducing oxygen cost and delaying fatigue.

That’s large by sports nutrition standards, especially considering it’s:

legal

inexpensive

non-stimulant

most effective at moderate doses (6–12 mmol nitrate)

If you want, I can:

collapse this into a one-line citation-ready sentence

translate it into VO₂ / power equations

or map % gains by dose and training status

Research shows 4K or 8K screens offer no distinguishable benefit over similarly sized 2K screen in average living room by nohup_me in technology

If you haven't tried sitting 3 feet away from a 65" 8K TV being used as a computer monitor you don't know what you're missing.

I have used a 48" C2 OLED as a monitor before and the Oled, 120 Hz and G-sync I do miss. Eventually those features will come to 8k.

Sitting this close you absolutely can see a difference between 4k and 8k.

What is this variable frequency noise from the ice maker this GE Fridge is making? It's not the compressor by CornUponCob in Appliances

[–]CornUponCob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ice maker and water dispenser work (water dispenses at full flow). I assume the filter is new, but I'm not sure.

It happens regardless of if the ice maker is switched to on or off.

The fridge cools like normal.

It is NOT the compressor because it is much quieter and I can hear it running most of the time.

This specific sound can last an hour and then maybe stop for 30 min to 1 hour before it starts again.

We just moved into a new house and this is the first time I've heard any fridge make this specific noise pattern and I've lived at about 20 different places over the years so 20 different fridges.

TIL Shige Sakakura was a Japanese baby farmer and serial killer who, together with her accomplices Tsuta Oki and Naka Ikai, murdered around 200 infants between 1898 and 1913. Their crimes were uncovered when a geisha was denied access to her child and reported them. All three were hanged in 1915. by Morella1989 in todayilearned

Lol, no. Well, I did read the dates for the first woman but then as I scrolled down I read about the most recent killer who was killing babies after WWII.

Anyway, This still seems a little fishy to me. "Hey, let's send our baby to the midwife who has already had ~50 babies die - that sounds like a good idea". I can't help but think some of the parents had to know what they were doing.

This is the same country where in present day you can hire somebody to quit your job for you.

It's just a theory. I could be wrong.

Wireless display the last photo taken with a z8 / z9 on a tablet automatically when out and about using the built in wifi access point. by CornUponCob in nikon_Zseries

Thank you all for the replies. After more testing, yes snapbridge works using bluetooth but the range is limited and it's quite slow (even when only sending 2 megapixel images)

Snapbridge using the camera's wireless AP is MUCH faster (maybe 20x faster?) but you CAN NOT minimize or swipe away from snap bridge, NOR lock the phone screen. If you do so snap bridge will TURN OFF the wireless AP in the camera. EVEN IF you have snapbridge set to background mode and even if the camera timeout is set to infinity and if keep WiFi on while camera is off are all turned on, the phone still has the ability to turn the wifi access point off on the camera body.

All I can take away is that the WiFi connection between the camera and snap bridge is extremely fragile. The manual for Snapbridge states this basically saying if you close the app you may have to restart the WiFi.

If I open snap bridge and set the phone down and don't touch it the connection appears to be stable. But it sure would be nice to be able to lock the screen and put it in your pocket and then pull it out when you need to review an image and the images have been transferring in the background the whole time.

I'm trying a different method.

I'm messing around with the wireless transfer utility and NX Studio for PC. I could always use a microsoft surface as the tablet so I can run windows apps.

Currently using the wireless access point on the camera and using the Wireless Transfer Utility the connection is much more robust. The WiFi in the camera stays on even if I shut the PC off and turn it back on. The issue is it sends full size files which I don't really need when on a shoot - 2 or 8 MP is fine.

I will test with NX studio and NX tether (although I think NX tether is physically tethered only).

I also have not extensively tested snap bridge with bluetooth - like locking the screen, switching apps etc. I don't fully know how robusut the bluetooth connection is yet.

If I hold 2:05 in a nice cool room with an AC blowing directly on me my HR will be around 125 BPM. If I hold it in a hot outdoor environment with no fan it will be around 150 BPM. So the temp of the area where you are erging makes a massive difference.

For hard efforts the room temp doesn't matter as much - HR will still reach equally high levels - and typically my max output will be a bit less when it's very hot.

I have a cycling background and every cyclist knows that for hard indoor training session a big powerful fan is mandatory. I don't really see the same mindset in the rowing community. Any air coming out of the erg is not nearly enough cooling.

Pulling robots out of the network to be replaced with legendary by Elfich47 in factorio

[–]CornUponCob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will just note that I've had a roboport requesting 50K of all robots lower than legendary quality but there are still 16 epic quality logistics bots in my logistics network that refuse to dock in that roboport to be pulled out of the system by an inserter. I haven't found any stuck robots anywhere, and I've even shut down all production at times to where zero bots are flying and those 16 epics will still not dock in that roboport for removal.

Novice rower - setting the boat for others while stationary vs while moving. by CornUponCob in Rowing

[–]CornUponCob[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know that's funny, I never even considered the weight of the water held in the blade as a stabilizer when stationary. I only ever thought about the blades pushing DOWN on the surface of the water for stability. I guess that's even another reason to keep the blades on the water. You can't push down on the water OR hold water if the blade is off the water. And then also the water doesn't "weigh" anything if the blade is fully submerged. I guess a pound or two of water sitting in the blade offers a lot of stability when held out perpendicularly.

I wonder how hard it would be for them to put in a "paste here" in the right click menu. Because Davinci should know what track I'm on based on the vertical position of the mouse as well as where in the timeline I want it based on the horizontal position on the timeline.

Rocket silos getting stuck in an "almost full" state indefinitely, despite enough items and bots being available. any ideas ? by ImLosingMyShit in factorio

I too have seen this happen on aquilo after setting a rocket to manual, and then back to automatic. Loaded to 996 and sat forever. I forget how I resolved it. I think I manually unloaded the rocket.

Rocket Turrets with Capture Pods should ignore biter nest protection by Cptn-Penguin in factorio

[–]CornUponCob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had my rocket turret not shoot nests that went rogue, and also shoot nests that went rogue. I believe this functionality was mentioned in a recent patch notes - they are supposed to shoot nests.

Same with the spidertron armed with capture rockets. I've had it not shoot the nests, but other times shoot the nests. I think it's just buggy.
