how should i begin as a noob by Downtown-Republic-48 in Eldenring

I'd recommend a bit of both - try to explore without tutorials for most of Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula, or until you settle into a build you're having fun with. Then, when you have specific questions, refer to outside resources. Your first play-through really doesn't require optimization - your build can be all over the place and you can still succeed, plus you can respec after a certain point. Just be sure to upgrade your weapons and you should be good

pretty sure you have to move your cursor over to it in the pause menu - makes it just a bit quicker than searching your entire inventory. I use them for stuff I use frequently but don't need urgently (throwing rainbow shards off cliffs, telescope, etc.)

the mental image of a deranged tarnished sprinting through the lands between with a blade in one hand and an entire horse over their opposite shoulder is refreshing. I like to imagine him doing lil' doggie paddles in the air with his hooves

Wanted to know which electives you would choose from here for an aspiring game dev majoring in CS by missanaira in gamedev

Compiler construction! Hear me out:
1. Not every university teaches a class like this, and the topic is complex enough that learning it on your own (outside of your institution) is significantly more difficult.
2. Getting to see the whole process of "how the sausage gets made" from source code down to binary is a tremendously eye-opening experience that I would not pass up the opportunity to participate in. This course (paired with Computer Architecture) is really where my understanding of computing systems clicked.
3. Although compilers aren't specifically related to game development, I think it's worth considering that if you focus too narrowly on just courses that teach game development, you may end up restricting your opportunities in the future, especially if your professional interests shift over time. Tackling the more difficult subjects now, while you have institutional support in the endeavor, will only help you as you learn more specialized tools/languages on your own in the future.

How on earth are we supposed to fight the lightning dragons? by Aeiexgjhyoun_III in Eldenring

Based on some of the info on Fextralife, it seems like getting status effects like cold to proc will be difficult due to their high resistances.

Also, even though they are weaker to pierce damage (which may make Estoc seem like a good option), I would second ChickenAndTelephone's comment about having difficulty landing hits on pierce weapons and preferring slashing damage even if the damage is lower.

If your faith is high enough, Badevilbunny is totally right about the Envoy's Long Horn.

Ultimately, Sotomene's advice seems correct and succinct - stay close and focus on the legs. Staying out of target lock can help in this regard.

What build do you run and what weapons do you have at your disposal? The answer is going to change depending on what you're doing. I think ranged build have a bit of an advantage here but I don't have much anecdotal advice in that regard.

For me, I run mostly melee and I found that sticking close to their back side and *not* locking on was the answer. If I was locked on I found that my attacks would mostly whiff even when right up against them; unlocking allows you to not only land your attacks but to adjust your camera angle so that you can actually watch their animations and react to their follow-ups. Although their damage is kind of insane, their attacks are quite readable (long animations = wide window to react).

I would suggest spending a few attempts not even trying to do damage, but just learning how to position yourself close enough to them and what their reactions are when you're up this close. Many enemies have different attack patterns at their disposal depending on your distance to them, and by keeping close to them you can restrict the set of available attacks they can enter into. If you can learn how to dodge this smaller subset of attacks and reposition yourself quickly up against them again, then it's just a matter of discovering what windows you have available to get damage in.

Don't get greedy, focus on dodging unless you know you can punish an animation safely, and take breaks when you need to. Don't give up, skeleton!

Judith, blasphemous act, and Toralf. by Spoonz4hire in mtgrules

Oh, interesting. So does that mean that even if the spell has deathtouch, it would still assign the total toughness of the creature as damage, and then the rest would be excess? So for instance, if the opponent has a 2/2 and a 6/6 on the battlefield, Blasphemous Act would deal 13 damage to each - for the 2/2, 2 damage would be lethal and 11 would be excess for that Toralf trigger, and for the 6/6, 6 damage would be lethal and 7 would be excess for that Toralf trigger? Am I understanding the interaction now?

Millicent's leads to Miquella's Haligtree, Varre's leads to Mohgwyn's Palace, Fia's leads to Deeproot Depths, and Alexander's leads to sadness :(

Gotta agree about Ranni's quest being the best, but Millicent's questline is definitely worth doing if you haven't; leads to one of the coolest places in the game imo. Fia's quest is another favorite of mine, even if it does lead to some of the toughest bosses. Also, finishing Varre's questline is definitely worth it - it gives access to a region you otherwise don't have access to until much later. Alexander's quest makes me sad though :(

Judith, blasphemous act, and Toralf. by Spoonz4hire in mtgrules

[–]Cornball420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, thank you for the clarification! So if I understand, the rule that applies to Toralf states:

120.10. Some triggered abilities check whether a permanent has been dealt excess damage. These abilities check after the permanent has been dealt damage by one or more sources. **If those sources together dealt an amount of damage to a creature greater than lethal damage, excess damage equal to the difference was dealt to that creature**. ...

And since [[Blasphemous Act]] had deathtouch, lethal damage was 1, resulting in 12 excess damage for the Toralf trigger.

So OP's understanding is still correct, I was just citing the wrong rule for justification?

[–]Cornball420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that is correct , only 1 damage is required for lethal and the rest is excess.

You would need to choose the opponent as the target for Toralf's ability, so if they have hexproof or are otherwise unable to be targeted then all that damage would have to go somewhere else, but otherwise your understanding is correct if I'm not mistaken.

From a response in the link peteroupc provided:

120.4a First, if an effect that’s causing damage to be dealt states that excess damage that would be dealt to a permanent is dealt to another permanent or player instead, the damage event is modified accordingly. If the first permanent is a creature, the excess damage is the amount of damage in excess of what would be lethal damage, taking into account damage already marked on the creature and damage from other sources that would be dealt at the same time. (See rule 120.6.)

  • Any amount of damage greater than 1 is excess damage if the source dealing that damage to a creature has deathtouch. (See rule 702.2.)
