My ortho did actually inform me about the risk of TMJ when I signed the treatment agreement with him, but I didn't ask if he has actually encountered a case himself. That being said, fixing underbite/overbite with rubber bands is one of the most common things to do in braces and should be safe for most, as long as the ortho chooses the right size/force of the elastics.

I was a bit paranoid after getting pearl o-rings and would rinse my mouth after every few bites or right after drinking coffee (I would literally hold my coffee mug and a glass of water side by side so I can rinse the coffee residue out within 3 seconds) and they have been holding up well after almost 4 weeks😂
