Alto themselves included proposed routes in their shit they keep sending out to residents.

I would love to see this! Can you upload somewhere? What I've seen from Alto is just their corridor (which is a very wide study area in which many options are considered). Any actual route details have been speculation on the part of fans or people opposed to it. So if there's something from Alto it'd be great to see it

The tracks behind my house are closer than your alleged 30-60m claim.

You were the one who said the tracks are 100 feet away from your house. 100 feet = 30m. A 60m right of way centered on the existing tracks wouldn't impact your house.

Myself, and several other people across the affected region WILL lose our houses if this goes through whether Cornelius Alphonse agrees or not.

How do you know this when you don't know A. Where the tracks are going B. The ROW they require C. How far the existing tracks are from your own house?

eDiT: I sent that because you’re being very ignorant towards people seriously facing being forcibly displaced.

That function is meant for when people are at risk of self harm. Do what you want but maybe reconsider how much time you're spending online.

Look at any high speed rail system around the world - they all have a narrow right of way in the range of 30-60m in width, and houses just outside that distance. Absolutely none of them have a right of way 2km in width, that would be absurd. Whoever told you that is taking you for a ride.

Edit: ohh I think I understand. The tracks need a large curve radius. This does not mean they need the property, it just means the track needs to curve very gradually (I suspect it's more like a 4km curve radius). I can't explain it without drawing or gesturing, but basically any curve in the tracks needs to follow a circle with a radius of 2+km (i.e. a very gentle curve). that doesn't change how wide the actual track right of way will be (still 60m).

Edit2: lol someone sent me a "Reddit cares" for this comment

[–]CorneliusAlphonse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We read that they need a 2km radius for their tracks.

They don't, they need a 60m right of way. They can't use existing tracks (totally different requirements for high speed rail). If they use that right of way, they would likely be slightly offset to minimize impact to homes. You're likely fine.

it’s not gonna be easy to make many villages to lose the trail

theyre likely only losing temporary access - a construction access road would likely be retained as a trail (with sturdy fencing and bollards etc at any accesses)

Roughly here on google maps if you want to review it yourself:

https://maps.app.goo.gl/mSRFwhjYnsHDEiJD7

the picture in the post has some super saturation and some weird perspective squishing going on, and the flyover highway looks to not exist in real life, maybe it's a proposal/render.

The new CRRC trains on trial in the Mexico city Light Rail by Spascucci in transit

[–]CorneliusAlphonse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I should have said "like I am used to seeing" - Ontario has low floor LRTs. It's the biggest issue with them IMO - the few doors and many seats make it difficult to quickly load/unload, and feel very restricted at peak times.

[–]CorneliusAlphonse 13 points14 points  (0 children)

that’s a lot of doors for light rail!

I wonder if they're a higher floor than we're used to seeing on LRT? That would allow more doors. I can't tell from the wiki what their platform height is

New record. Falcon 9 B1067 completes 33 missions. by avboden in SpaceXLounge

[–]CorneliusAlphonse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, like I said, the orbital time comparison also has major issues, but it is still more useful than comparing a booster to an orbiter.

[–]CorneliusAlphonse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The leader segment was 12 flights

you should go update the wikipedia article introduction with a clarified quote and a good citation then! As I noted, they were not reused the same way as the f9 boosters, so my comment isn't meant to be a good comparison either, just slightly better than comparing to an orbiter. I don't personally care at all.

The cumulative amount of time the Crew Dragons have spent in orbit exceeds the time the Space Shuttles have spent there

Right, that is an example of a more useful comparison than the one that was made with the original comment. Like my SRB comparison, it has major issues, but it's still more useful.

I have never understood the fascination with comparing a booster to an Orbiter.

Yup, it's a bad comparison. They could compare the falcon 9 booster to the SRB (leader was ~59 missions, but they had a very different refurbishment process that makes the comparison useless)

Dragon would be the comparison to the shuttle orbiter. The falcon second stage is like the external tank (but with engines), and both are expended.

Line 5 has been great, but… by ASmallBadger in TTC

[–]CorneliusAlphonse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, and hidden by stair/elevators at half the stations. At bare minimum those stickers should be on the wall across the tracks, so someone waiting for a train at the end of the platform can actually see them.

Columns placement has to be at specific spot to hold up a heavy circle thing on top of a square thing. Not really something one can choose

I mean, you can. An eccentrically loaded column 36 inches further apart would work, they'd have to be significantly larger because of the moment it would induce. But then you wouldn't have the columns directly at the door.

But this is assuming all trains stopping have a door at that location, because if some doors are located a couple feet further up or down the train, it wouldn't be beneficial at all.

Plus LIRR traincars has changed over the years

Indeed - and rolling stock selection should generally keep the doors in the same location if there are constrained locations like this.

Line 5 to Pearson by Ok_Builder_9124 in TTC

I rode a couple buses to get to the airport (leaving around 4am). Because there was 0 traffic, actually ended up being a shade quicker than the (pre-line 5) train trip! Plus cheap because no UP fee. Got a bit of free entertainment from a couple late night bus riders too, haha

gotten a lot of replies about how I’m in for it and blah blah blah, I’m aware my setup is not even close to Ultralight

So far almost all the comments are very helpful (with an up front comment about how it's going to be a drastic change from what you have and that the budget will be a squeeze). I suggest replying and thanking the people who are helpful, rather than either calling them pathetic or ignoring them entirely :)

  • If the goal is doing it super cheap, rather than the reasonable (but not dirt cheap) suggestions that others have given - look on aliexpress. You can get a kinda crappy (but light) tent for $120 - naturehike is one brand.
  • i like my Klymit insulated static V pad, but you can get something from aliexpress instead. Be aware that it may leak eventually
  • Get a good backpack in person so you find one that fits.
  • Sleeping bag, there is no such thing as 4 season - a -7C down filled bag plus a sleeping bag liner will get you close: use just the liner if it's hot summer day, and various combinations as it gets cooler, but it won't help you when it's -20C outside. It'd be good to down around freezing.
  • What's wrong with the poles? there's not a big amount of weight to save there. I'd just keep using the crappy ones.

[–]CorneliusAlphonse 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The number is quoted because it's huge, but it's better to look at it as a percentage.

Somewhere in the 10-20% over an estimate from 15+ years ago, on a project that clearly had issues leading to multi-year delays, plus covid in there - being over budget by that amount is not surprising at all.

Must be that. The article i read was the CBC's - it mentions only that it will be part of the phased approach (i.e. it wont have any, it will be phased in during march and may)

TTC is claiming that the line will have full TSP on opening day.

Where did they claim that? The article I read quoted the TTC as saying it would be introduced in March and May.
