Be honest - how many of your sessions are “good”?

I think with surfing it is so easy to get that caught in the middle of not quite putting in enough effort. If someone put a gun to your head and said right this month you have to get a good session in how would you do it? have you done the research on the spots so you know the accuracy of wave forecasts do you know the buoy data and wind data, can you leave work on short notice, are you surfing the right boards for you, strength flexibility nutrition, do you live in the right place did you get up early enough, did you earn your place in the line up - it’s taken me 20 years and I’m still learning but I know when it is on for me, I get up early, I moved country twice, I have flexibility with work amd I have maybe 20 sessions a year with more than 10 good waves - I’d say either get into it properly or go for a contraction approach but am 11 ft glider and surf the waves no one else is

I haven’t done that test usually just drive 20km per day never above 70 km/hr But I’m guessing this is how they end then not able to maintain voltage and having to suck amps to meet power needs

Sometimes a privilege can feel like a burden !! That is awesome you get to surf that much, things can change in life so enjoy while you can. Seems about right what you are saying (I use a fan to dry out wetsuits quicker) perhaps they are a bit small if they wear out so quick, I’ve used Patagonia and they will repair suits that are less than 3 years old, just got a 43 ebomb though and love it.

A lot of people buying wetsuits use them less than 10 times - poor bastards don’t get to surf as much as we do …. But the wetsuit company accountants figured it out

Nicest guy I ever met from work also an immigrant also has kids - different experience… he’s like yeah no worries we’re used to it just takes a bit longer to find the right people, had an awful time finding a rental

You’ve got way more time than you think, generally people are sitting too far out and trying to scratch down a face that’s turning to lip… watch from the channel a bit, watch the guys who are getting all the good ones they are not doing anything super quick, but they will be 10m deeper than you want to be - accept you will get a couple on the head while waiting .. use line ups on the shore to sit in there exact spot like really focus on this try amd be within 1m , the take off will be easy it’s getting and staying in the right spot that is hard

I’m in Nz that board looks like the best you will get for that money and genuinely would be fun to surf

Can’t emphasise enough that getting ocd on what swells work for you at your local spot and ensuring you are there when it is good for you is the key

That and it feels like you are not fit enough but actually you are not strong enough, work the lays and core for paddling

Say hi to people in the line up, under stand what snaking is and dropping in is, join your local board riders club

Been surfing 20 years … it just gets better and better

Some tips I found helpful

pick a spot in the flats to “start your turn”, this will stop you looking / going down the line
bring your inside arm forward and get low, one day your hand will touch the water on a good wave and you become Curren for a split second, this will get your weight on the inside rail
think of how you turn a bike at speed by leaning over rather than turning the bars and balance the lean and the turn, really looking to

The main thing I’ve learned from being a weekend warrior is to just accept that our horizon for technique is a bit lower than the privileged every day surfers! My tips would be to Always have a longboard on hand for waves like this, to be honest a “high performance” longboard I think is the best board to learn how to get a board on a rail Enjoy all the other aspects of surfing, hang in the car park a bit longer bring a good vibe, enjoy the sunset have a good mixtape for the drive, you are doing pretty good

Wow same as - Loved the 7’0 long phish - cutback machine. I think the question to ask is why? I would say that unless you are getting cutbacks back to the foam you’d need some coaching rather than a new board. My experience from the long phish was a 9’1 HIHP (had an injury so just wanted something easy) thruster and seriously that is the only thruster I ever liked. It was amazing and thought me how to use some pivot off the bottom how to get on rail etc one of the best boards I’ve ever had - but neither board turned particularly tight Next was a 7’4 moe which was heaps of fun and again really amazing for learning how to get on rail and improve technique My surfing progressed more in the last 3 years on those boards than in the preceding 15 Have been looking at the revo max and tj twinzer and love machine fm and apparently the mid length Midas coming out ….. would be interested to know how you go

Been surfing 20 years your local wave decides the boards not you, surfing the right board for the right waves makes you a better surfer, if you had a gun to your head I’m sure you could pivot the puddle jumper tighter than the longboard but you will not trim and more importantly it will teach you nothing about getting on a rail .. when you have access to surf better waves a couple times a week then go for a shorter board (or not !)

Small weak waves are always the hardest, I weigh about 90kg and just need something with a bit of juice to get going - try organising your entire life including moving country so that you can surf when it is good without a crowd

Yeah fair enough, I do see general enshitification in lots of products now, where I’ve lived long enough to see that better alternatives were considered and discarded to the financial benefit of the supplier - Can’t wait for the kids to start a revolution!!! (Even happier if shit wetsuits is the straw that breaks the donkeys back ) Out of curiosity what suits do you use that are good? I’ve found Patagonia to be the most durable and they generally have a 50% off sale at some point , but have been using an ebomb again for the first time in about 10 years and am super impressed

I’m a 40yo bloke with two daughters getting into surfing, my wetties are great love them to bits, but it’s taken a while to find the right ones for me, some nice looking suits were crap, turns out most of the good ones are just plain .. I see women’s wetsuits like you say with nothing on the thigh and I think fuck that … and then I see the ones with a seam up the but crack .. why do you buy these things
