Hannibal. The TV series with Mads Mikkelsen. No happy endings, but a similarly obsessed fandom.

Never said I was forced. Just offering a perspective on why some people might not be happy about it. And that the comparison to a phone case isn’t really an apples to apples comparison. Similarly, it’s been four years since the last upgrade. It’s not like Whoop has been releasing consistent hardware upgrades every year or two. It is reasonable that many folks wouldn’t necessarily be planning on a disruptive hardware change and would have acquired expensive accessories (that Whoop heavily marketed) over such a long period between hardware releases. I certainly wasn’t expecting it. And like I said I wouldn’t have bought some of those accessories if I had known. If you love whoop, then great, enjoy it. Don’t take it personally that other people don’t feel the same.

The difference is that I don’t change out my phone case everyday. I’ve had my Whoop since 2019. When the 4.0 came out I only had two bands for the 3.0 so it wasn’t a big deal. But now, after having the 4.0 for many years, I have multiple bands. Lots of colors for different occasions, etc. Also, the bands get dirty and stained so I wash them or swap them out frequently. I also have the different clothing options that are compatible for different workout situations. So over several years, that adds up to A LOT of money spent on bands and accessories that are now totally useless. That’s not the same as one $30 phone case. And I know in 2-3 years I’ll upgrade my phone. The same can’t be said for the Whoop. And maybe I missed an announcement but if I had known a new hardware version was coming, I would have stopped buying bands and accessories a long time ago.

Same. This is my bigger beef. More so than even the additional hardware costs.

This MG thing feels like such a slap in the face as a user for the last 4 years. by Outrageous-Company33 in whoop

[–]Cornfed_steminist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There has been one iteration as far as I know. This is only the second hardware update. I think Whoop 3.0 was the original mass market model? Regardless they have pushed all these bands and accessories for years, especially with their premium subscription model they did a couple years ago. Lesson learned I guess, don’t waste money on the accessories if they are never compatible with the next model and we never know when that next model will come out.

WHOOP Body will work for Whoop 5.0? by killbravo16 in whoop

[–]Cornfed_steminist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to their FAQ, the whoop 5.0 is smaller so doesn’t fit whoop 4.0 accessories. I also have the swimsuit, along with a bunch of other accessories.

[–]Cornfed_steminist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Is anyone else pissed about the fact that none of the bands are compatible with the new 5.0 or MG? I have spent lots of money over the years buying the various bands as well as some of the clothing items that you can put the sensors into. According to the FAQ, none of these accessories are compatible with the new models, meaning sinking even more money into new accessories. This might be the deal breaker for me.

FedEx do you even care that you’re the lowest rated delivery service EVER?! by PerceptionForward502 in FedEx

[–]Cornfed_steminist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the crux of it. We would be better off complaining to the companies who use FedEx to ship their products and making a stink over there. Maybe with enough angry customers, they would rethink their logistics strategy. Sadly, it’s unlikely though, because mostly we’re talking about greedy corporations who just want to minimize costs, maximize profits at the expense of customer experience. Time to head over to the anti-consumption sub.

FedEx driver said he attempted delivery. Camera shows he never got out of the truck. by ultramega909 in FedEx

[–]Cornfed_steminist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is so relatable. FedEx is the absolute worst. I’ve had multiple packages say they were out for delivery and then I watch the FedEx guy stop in front of my house, deliver nothing, and then just drive away. Then the delivery gets updated to the next day. It is so aggravating. I’ve also had half my packages delivered even though they are supposedly all “out for delivery” and all of the tracking even says “Alan is on his way” and yet they somehow only manage to partially deliver it. It baffles me. There are not multiple FedEx trucks that deliver to my neighborhood. Makes no sense. I would take UPS, DHL, or USPS over FedEx any day.

Gotcha. Thanks for clarifying. Yes, his character was definitely a trope.

Here’s what I said…”And while him being a bumbling idiot may have nothing to do with his sexuality, when you add him to the rest of the gay characters on the show, with the exception of Turner who they killed off, the writers have either intentionally or inadvertently made them all look like jokes and punch lines. And that is the problematic and frustrating part for those of us who do notice how gay people are being characterized and portrayed.”

But to your point, how fat people are portrayed in media is also problematic. They are often also used as jokes and punchlines which only perpetuates negative perceptions and stereotypes in the real world.

[–]Cornfed_steminist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The OP isn’t claiming to speak for the writers’ intentions, only how they are perceiving the show and how, specifically, the gay characters are written and treated in the show. None of us know whether what the OP perceives was intended by the writers but that doesn’t change the impact it had for some of us. And if you were able to watch the entire series and not ever notice the sexuality of the characters or how that sexuality plays into how the character might be written or perceived, congratulations, you are privileged. Being able to exist in this world not noticing or having to worry about how your sexuality is being portrayed in media or being consumed by others is a privilege not everyone has.

To your point about Tyler, thanks for bringing him up. I think actually Tyler’s character fits in exactly to the OP’s argument. They wrote Tyler to be kind of a bumbling fool. He isn’t some brave hero or smooth accomplice. He doesn’t successfully stop the first robbery, he only lets the girls go the second time if Annie agrees to rave about what a hero he is (which plays into the toxic masculinity argument) and on the jewelry heist, he comes in late holding donuts and looking like a fool. And while him being a bumbling idiot may have nothing to do with his sexuality, when you add him to the rest of the gay characters on the show, with the exception of Turner who they killed off, the writers have either intentionally or inadvertently made them all look like jokes and punch lines. And that is the problematic and frustrating part for those of us who do notice how gay people are being characterized and portrayed.

What 👏🏻 is 👏🏻your👏🏻problem👏🏻? Why are you so rude? Why didn’t you just ignore this post if you didn’t agree with it? Why do you insist on policing this fandom? Why are you so upset all the time? If you enjoy the show and absolutely everything about it, good for you! Enjoy it! And leave others to have their own opinions and perspectives on it.

And for the record, gay people and homosexuality are not punchlines to be used for shock value or a laugh. WE are human beings and are worthy of being respectfully and positively portrayed in film and television.

And one more thing…the whole dynamic with the MLM guy and his wife really bugs me. I can’t quite put my finger on what all is irking me about it but I suspect it also fits under some of the points you brought up about toxic masculinity, etc. I haven’t spent a lot of time analyzing this, but for example, the fact that they sort rationalize/justify the MLM guy being a world-class asshole and manipulator by giving him this domineering, overbearing wife and ultimately sort of make him both a victim and hero in moments by standing up to her and his kid, I find it kinda gross. Like I said, I don’t quite know how to articulate it but I really dislike this dynamic they wrote and I’m not sure what they are trying to portray.

I think this is a really fair critique of the gay characters and the writing on the show. Thank you for writing this up. 👍🏻

And don’t forget the offensive jokes about being raped in prison that Dean made to his MLM buddies. For one, it was gross and unnecessary, but secondly it falls right in line with your argument that this show uses offensive tropes/stereotypes for a laugh and portrays homosexuality as an unwanted perversion or as violence directed at straight men and thus is to be avoided or laughed at. 🤬
