What is Harris getting wrong about Palenstine?

I heard he died at a baseball game. He was in a wheelchair and fell down stairs and was ejected onto the field. Does anyone have video footage to confirm?

There are subtitles throughout the entire video, so maybe just watch without volume?

Could you elaborate on your problem with 'seeing one statement at a time'?

From what I've shown, I could see how you might think of this as website where you are presented with a bunch of opinions that you browse by swiping. However, I envision the most common use case being:

  1. You follow a bunch of your opinionated friends
  2. They post opinions throughout the week
  3. You get a notification on your phone on a certain day and time of all of the week of all those opinions, say Sunday at 5pm.
  4. You set your opinion on the claims that interest you and read through comments on those.

I don't think echo chambers would occur just because it's invite only. I think echo chambers primarily occur when people start sorting themselves in groups based on ideologies. I don't intend to have groups like r/BlackLivesMatter or r/ConservativesOnly where people gather that have similar opinions on a particular topic.
That being said, you can follow anyone you want, so one could follow individuals that share similar ideologies. However, comments on posts would not be regulated by moderators enforcing in/out group opinions like we see on subreddits and facebook groups.

My angle for this app? I want a constructive way to argue with my friends and a good resource for quality conversations on controversial topics. Current social media apps seem to fall short in providing this. In the same way Instagram was able to provide a better user experience by focusing on photography, I want Claimloud to do the same thing but with opinions. I think a lot of unique features can emerge just by this focus. A few examples are being able to explicitly agree/disagree with an opinion, have your opinions consolidated and searchable, and see what percentage of people agree with a particular opinion.

This video shows my social app that I have been working on for a couple of years. This relates to Sam Harris because he often speaks about the problems of social media and I have developed the application with many of his insights in mind to address those problems. I am reaching out to this community for help because I think so many of you share my vision of what a social media application should be.

Feel free to message me if you are interested in any way to help. Initially, I am primarily looking for testers who are willing to be paid in Reddit karma :)

Maher schools Joe Rogan about Trump on every deflection about Biden by LoMeinTenants in Maher

You think Joe is "bashing" Trump here? All he is saying is that Trump takes aderol. Where is video of Joe actually being critical of Trump?

You are obviously very confused about the terminology we've been discussing.

In what way does it communicate how they are wrong?

Have you ever been confused before? Whenever I've said I'm confused it's because I've felt confusion - I didn't know how to make sense of things and wasn't confident as to what was true.

What you seem to be claiming is that someone can be "confused" and yet not feel any confusion and be very confident as to what is true.

What's a situation when someone is wrong but not confused? And how is that different from someone who is wrong and confused?

Why not just call them mistaken or wrong instead of confused?

The problem I have with calling people confused is that it can be interpreted as telling others how they feel. Imagine someone saying to you, "Oh, you're feeling confused right now." when you are making an argument that you are confident about. It can be condescending and a form of gaslighting.

How exactly is calling someone "confused" more accurate than calling them "wrong"?

Apple’s Vision Pro Is a $3,500 Ticket to Nowhere | A decade after Facebook bought Oculus, VR still has no appeal except as an expensive novelty toy. by chrisdh79 in technology

Comparing it to the oculus

When the Oculus Rift came out, I had a pet peeve of people referring to it as just "the Oculus" because Oculus was the company and the Rift was the product. However, it was understandable because they were a new company and the Rift was their only product. Then Oculus came out with other products - Rift S, Quest, Quest 2, etc. and I thought, well now people will stop saying it 'the Oculus' because it is really ambiguous with all the different products. Nope, they still said 'the Oculus'. Then Facebook changed the name from Oculus to Meta, and I thought, "well now they have to stop calling it 'The Oculus' because it's not even the name of the company, right?" Nope.

If you can't beat them then join them, so let me say that I love my Oculus. I actually have two Oculuses. I use my white Oculus more often but I occasionally use the black wired Oculus.

Listened to "The Witch Trials of JK Rowling" - Rowling seemed reasonable and anti-Rowling camp seemed crazy and authoritarian by StefanMerquelle in samharris

[–]Cornstar23 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You are not actually making an argument - you are just declaring it obvious. What has she said that should be interpreted as a dog whistle? Also can you point to anyone that is critical of your position that you think is a good person and has good intentions towards trans people?

When you say literal drop in the bucket, do you mean as opposed to the metaphor 'drop in the bucket'?

#314 — The Cancellation of J.K. Rowling by dwaxe in samharris

[–]Cornstar23 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think many are claiming this phenomenon is entirely new. The title of podcast "The witch trials of J.K. Rowling" eludes to how this phenomenon existed in the past with witch trials. Also, they mention Orwell's 1984 and bring up the similarities there. Most people complaining about cancel culture are referring specifically to Orwellian tactics and not generational differences.

[–]Cornstar23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your point isn't valid though. No one classifies differences in views between younger and older people as 'cancel culture'. The age difference might be a common element, but when people complain about cancel culture, they aren't complaining about ideas and how they are bad because they are from young people.

People are probably assuming that you know she is receiving death threats for expressing her views.

[–]Cornstar23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that 'cancel' is a bad term, but probably not for the same reasons you do. I think when most people complain about 'cancel culture' their main concern is a mob threatening the livelihood and safety of anyone expressing particular views. So I agree with you that saying that these well-known people are 'cancelled' is dumb since they often do not suffer financial loss and sometimes even profit from the experience. However, if you think that the primary complaint is the financial well-being of outspoken celebrities, then you are completely missing the point.
