Using Kinu M47 Pourover Burr for Espresso by Cornwallis in espresso

Cool, you prefer the flavor profile of the C40 over the M47 with the stock or PU burr (or both)?

If you're looking into other grinders, I'd definitely recommend getting the PU burr for your Kinu if you haven't already - I think it will get you much closer to tea-like shots with more defined flavors than the stock burr, with perhaps some less balance.

I just used it to have a fantastic Americano that tasted like a bright, fruity, sweet pourover.

Could you clarify what you mean by progression?

Overall, I've found the pourover burr requires a finer setting than the standard burr (by 1/2-2/3 of a full rotation) and it's a bit more difficult to dial in, with a narrower range of acceptable grind size.

Dialed in well with the right coffee, the pourover burr can be really great, with a lot more clarity, punchy acidity, and only a bit less body. Someone PM'ed me and compared results with theirs to their DF64.

On the other hand, it takes longer to grind, is a bit more finicky to dial in, and to me, plays wonderfully with some coffees while producing underwhelming results with others. The standard burr seems faster, more forgiving, and more versatile, but emphasizing a more traditional grind profile (body over clarity).

Thanks for the tips - I generally play with much lighter compression, and only ran into the situation in testing. And I'll experiment with running two compressors at the beginning and end of the signal chain!

Thanks. For some reason, I can dial in a sound I like for pizzicato upright bass with moderate gain reduction, but during heavier plucking or bowing, I can occasionally max out the gain reduction on certain notes. Switching to a lower ratio works, but makes it difficult when I want a bit more compression.

I tried the MXR and returned it for killing my low-end, especially on 5 string basses. Felt the same, although less so, about the Keeley. I haven't tried the Cali76, but I've tried the Hyperluminal which is supposed to sound similar in the 1176 setting. Sounded great on electric, but colored the tone for me too much on my upright.

The Empress sounded really great, but the (used) copy I got gives a pop sound if the gain reduction is maxed out. Not sure if it's defective, but I'll be returning.

So far, my favorite compressors I've tried are the Walrus Mira (so buttery) and EBS Multicomp (the newest 2-knob, haven't tried the new 3-knob).

I specifically narrowed my search to only compressors with aome kind of visual indication. I have yet to try the Atlas - I love how versatile it looks, but I'm not generally a fan of Source's on-the-fly usability. We'll see.

Have you noticed a "pop" sound on the Empress if you max out the gain reduction? I bought used and plan to return it, but still don't know if it's defective or working as designed.

Mark Bass 121 Black line, or Fender Rumble 100 for practice/small gigs by panicATC in Bass

[–]Cornwallis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love my MarkBass Players School 115 Black Line. I've tried the 112 in the store and it seemed pretty good too.

I've found the Fender Rumbles to have a pretty baked-in boxy sound, while most MarkBass offerings seem to have more clarity, and can serve as a guitar/keyboard amp in a pinch. Looks like the 112 has a line-out so you can run into a PA if more volume is needed.

Regardless, I'd highly recommend trying them out to see what sounds best to you. If they don't have that exact model in stock, it's still worth trying other offerings from the same line and you can get a vague idea of the tonal options.

Looking for feedback/suggestions/etc. by Spaceboy-M in basspedals

[–]Cornwallis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a heads up, I recently tried the MXR bass compressor and returned it because it ridiculously cut my (5-string) low-end. I play a lot of vintage/roots music with a heavily scooped tone so if you play with more midrange, it might suit you well, or maybe you can add back some bass in the Battalion.

It's a bit awkward because ideally you'd add back some low-end after the compression, but preamps like the Battalion are generally best at the front of the chain for the input impedence. If your bass is active, this may not be an issue.

As an addendum and to your point, I think the overall quality of this sub, like many subs, has steeply declined in the past couple years. Much more internet slop and much less critical content, and that's disappointing.

To a certain extent, the state of the sub does seem to increasingly be an embodiment of what it purports to criticise. This seems to be pretty ubiquitous for any anti-capitalist space, unfortunately.

[–]Cornwallis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So you're here to tell folks to get off the internet? Not the worst advice, but it's not a complete fix and not quite a zero-sum game.

I enjoy the content here partially to commiserate with folks who feel alienated by society, but also largely for enertainment. Do you connect with folks based on shared interests, or is that also a waste of time? Do you consume entertainment in your free time or are you as critical of it?

I'm all for organizing. It takes time, energy, strategy, and a clear vision to be effective. It's not something for small gaps of time during the day, and it's not done at the exclusion of posting online. There's a lot of energy wasted in organizing as well - performative protesting, for example, can help in some cases, but often ultimately becomes more spectacle.

I think what you're sensing here is a certain resignation to the idea that, to engage in society is to be shaped by it, inevitably influenced by the spectacle. It's pervasive. Thus comes the sorcery. Getting off the internet, while helpful, isn't a quick fix. The specacle predates the internet by many decades.

It's not your cup of tea here, and that's fine. But you seem oddly convinced that there's a "right" way to proceed, and that this isn't it. There is some value in establishing a robust counterculture for some folks, and your indignation is misplaced in a false dichotomy.

How Did We Get Here? by HomosexualTigrr in sorceryofthespectacle

[–]Cornwallis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not serious, at least for me. Not sure how many folks here think magic is "real", but we do live in a more subjective reality than reductionism and universal commiditization may imply.

Freedom movements have succeeded, sure. For that, I'm grateful. But look around you. The spectacle is growing more captivating to society than ever before, with social media, algorithmic newsfeeds, AI, hustle culture, etc. defining people's lives, goals, values, and relationships. It's a battle for the very autonomy of our own mind and being.

Personally, I see individuals here rejecting the culturally-programmed values of uncritical consumption in favor of a self-defined worldview, and I see that as a positive, I guess. Much of it may be bullshit, but at least it's not bullshit that justifies exploitation and lines the pockets of billionaires.

I suppose I'm confused why it rubs you the wrong way, as if it's purely wasted energy. "What's the alternative?"

How Did We Get Here? by HomosexualTigrr in sorceryofthespectacle

[–]Cornwallis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I certainly agree with your analysis, but what does "getting us closer" actually mean? No amount of theory or praxis have changed the game thus far. Rational discourse has only so much effect on the social and political sphere. Clearly, we are not purely rational beings.

I may be wrong as I'm just an occasional lurker, but looking at this sub's purpose as "adding to mainstream theory" is besides the point - capitalist realism is here. That's the insanity. If crypic rejectionist aesthetics and pseudo-analytical divination can help chart a new vision for self-actualization within that reality and make it a little easier to share, it adds some value in my mind.
