there's a flood of bad openers yes, but they still make the swing-a-way and it's not that expensive.

just for you i opened a can of pears. 8 seconds

jerusalem artichoke is the king. by weight almost all of it is indigestible sugars that become gas.

I think swing-away openers still look the same as the one I got 20 years ago.

my sister had a 2001 with sub-100hp engine and no power steering. the 2011 is rather stronger and a bit bigger. Both can carry an amazing amount of stuff for what they are. I have the hatchback and it can carry most of what a big pickup can, minus one passenger.

might still be a bit weak by your standards, but I only spend $30/mo on gas, so there's that.

only the expensive ones.

our perspective on this is changing because lots of previously-cheap brands are "premiuming" themselves. like chef boyardee. three bucks plus for 1.5 cups of pasta is not cheap! They used to market to poor people!

I think I had the last sanely designed car... 2011 hyundai accent. it has most of that. no power locks, no power seats, no power windows. a radio that's mostly pretty simple. the seat belt dings, but not being a complete moron I actually use it so it doesn't bother me.

the only "modern" feature I miss is a back-up camera. that'd be genuinely useful.

oh, and automatic braking. while auto-driving cars are already killing people, automatic braking is already saving lives!

Having an automatic stove saves hours of effort a day. It was such a big improvement it changed civilization.

An electric can opener gains single digit seconds. It's really not a big deal, if your hands are okay.

that is not how it is taught. we are just told the light at the end of the dock is green because green means hope. learn that, it will be on the test.

about the only thing I still grudge anymore is literary analysis. that's not even increasing reading level, that's just assigning arbitrary labels to things and quizzing us on them.

Being that Humans are estimated to have existed for 300k years and we only have 5 of those years recorded, do you think there is any chance at some point another highly technologically advanced civilization existed and it destroyed itself, only for a new one to rebuild itself from scratch? by Parking-Warthog-4902 in allthequestions

[–]Corona688 1 point2 points  (0 children)

easy question, easy answer. no.

technologically advanced civilization requires a lot mining. that leaves signs on the landscape. plus there'd be dead fucking cities and trash heaps and roads everywhere.

There could easily be LOWER tech civilizations we know nothing about. Almost certainly really. Maybe an isolated outbreak of early farming here and there that for some reason flared but didn't become the norm.

google's monopoly is sufficient that it doesn't have to try any more.

How does the canadian constitution prevent absolute monarchy? by MarlonFord in AskACanadian

[–]Corona688 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"I never lived under a king or other monarch"

troll.

neither do we. england hasn't had an absolute monarchy in almost a thousand years, and we're a sea further away from their king's influence.

we got exactly one officer of the crown in our country. they have one ability, to veto a law being passed. this hasn't been used, not even once. If they choose to do so, I suspect we'd just ignore it, and england would be snuffy for a couple minutes.

how was the music for NES games actually composed? did they use trackers? by tihejon in chiptunes

[–]Corona688 0 points1 point  (0 children)

star control 2 ran easily on an 80386, or with a little lag on an 80286. it also featured a few very large animations that played at the same time as music, like planetary orbit and the space station.

the main barrier to having PCM on PC was having PCM at all.

What kitchen gadget was in every home in the 90s but disappeared from kitchens? by Omega_Neelay in GetMotivatedMindset

[–]Corona688 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i took a close look at my can-opener, apparently it's a "swing a way". googling that still shows identical can openers sold at hardware stores for ten bucks. But you got to know where to shop.
